Chapter 14

Kaiden
“I want every corner of the pack searched now.” I growled.
“Of course Alpha.” Said one of my Warriors, shifting and running off, heading east while I went west, down the hill toward the coffee shop.
There was a worry in my heart for my little mate. She was small, frail, and even though the pack was safe, I couldn’t stop thinking about how she Can’t shift well. Should she need to, she was vulnerable…
It was up to me to teach her, since no one else did. I wouldn’t be easy on her either since she was my mate. No one else in the real world would should something happen to me, which was unlikely as it got, but still very possible.
And as it stands, she is still timid of me when I lose my temper…There was still a little bit of guilt for that as well, but I had to shake it off. I had to find her. I needed her as much as I needed air. There was also something I hadn’t told her; that the rogue Alpha was single.
Rakaam snarled before I could continue. [Our little mate is for Us, go back to the prison. Let me kill the intruder.] He growled with venom.
I had to shut him out, so that I could get a link that she was in the housing district, meaning that she was at her parent’s home.
I ran off to get her, not bothering to take off the blood stained clothes I had on from whipping the rogue. As it was, it took everything I had not to shift.
-----Eclipse-----
“Hello Luna!” Said Larry cheerfully. He was an ex-Warrior that ran the deli shop with his mate. He was a tall, burly, shaggy black haired wolf who became crippled long before I was born protecting the pack. Some injuries were harder to recover from than others, and for him, he limped, but I never asked what happened to him. I never wanted to be rude, and that seemed like it would be a tad personal to just ask someone that, along with how old they were.
“Our little Eclipse is Luna?” Asked Mable walking in, the wolf who ran the clothing store. She was a light gray haired she wolf who taught me how to use a sewing machine, but she was also Zeke’s gossip partner since her shop was on the same strip.
“Yeah… it was a surprise to me too.” I said sheepishly.
“No kiddin’.” Chuckled Larry. “When I saw you a few nights ago I hardly believed it.” He ruffled my hair. “If anybody gives you a hard time, let me know. I may be retired, but I still got it.” He stood as tall as he could, though he did use a cane to get around.
“Oh stop it before your head swells too big to make my hero.” She giggled.
“Mable, I made your turkey sub and sent it to you already.” He said confused.
“No you didn’t?” She said also confused.
“Yeah, I gave it to your grandpup, Nathaniel about 20 minutes ago. He said you wanted a turkey on rye, extra mayo.” He said scratching his chin with a light chuckle.
“Damn it.” She grumbled.
“He’s also been putting his paws all over Zeke’s glass.” I chimed in. I felt like a snitch, but seeing Zeke scrub so hard made me feel for him.
She sighed. “I already told Zeke next time he does it to call me, and I’d make him clean it up himself.” She smiled gently.
“I’ll make you both the usual on the house. Nate can work with me and my mate the rest of the afternoon. I got some potatoes I need to peel for tomorrows mash n’ gravey.” He said with a grin.
“That sounds fair.” I agreed, and he started making two BLT subs with turkey, honestly it was my favorite from his store. “I got some extra bacon fried up, why not have this for lunch with me?” He offered, and we both agreed.
I ate it there, and left, getting bows from both my friends. I’d known them since I was a pup, and they were good people. Wolves in the pack were helpful, and the community here was small, so everyone knew everyone… Also now that it was known that I was Luna, I was bowed to by everyone as I walked down the street. Wolves made way for me, but I didn’t care about that. Shimmer did. She wanted the submission, because now that she saw herself as Luna, she expected to be seen and treated as such.
It felt nice to get stuff for free and chit chat with my old neighbors too, but honestly, I was missing my new home. Alpha was wild and unpredictable, but he melted me by his touch.
I felt like I was starting to understand his gaze, and I craved it. It made me feel special. I liked his passion…. It made me feel like I was the only thing in the world that made him happy. I’d made it up in my mind that so long as he could control himself, that I would follow him. I let out a sigh and looked up at the sun in the center of the sky; the clouds and the coolness of the breeze caressed me.
I was interrupted by the familiar scent of home. The door still had claw marks and the wood was splintered, but it was repainted and fixed. I wish I knew he was just talking that way because he was so excited to find me, but I think I made the best choices given the knowledge I had. I hesitated. Now that I was here, I didn’t want to disturb them, but I was in the area, and I figured they would want me to stop by.
My parents were off today. I could smell lunch cooking on the stove, I should have called, but then if everyone knew I was coming it would probably make them uncomfortable. Their lives, our lives, were very simple ones. I would tutor, mom and dad went to work. I chose to live with them because I didn’t want to be alone. It was also traditional to live with family until your mate was found.
I took a deep breath and rang the doorbell. I instantly got a hug and was welcomed in.
“Eclipse!” Said my mom squishing me, and I hugged her back.
“I’m glad you came to visit pumpkin.” Said dad patting my hair.
“I just came for the last of my clothes and to say hi.” I said coming in and sitting in the kitchen, because mom held my shoulders, pushing me to the dining table. It was round hardwood, and well warn from being there for over 20 years. All the furniture in our house came from when they first moved to the pack, and it was a cozy three bed, two bath home.
“Have some tea first.” She said with a small smile.
Dad got my clothes, while mom put a kettle on the stove. I didn’t have much, but I didn’t want to get anything new. There was no need. I had a feeling all my stuff would stay in my room untouched if I didn’t get it anyway.
“So how is Alpha?” Asked dad while the kettle went off. Mom got it, and I tried to think of how I would word it. My dad sat down, and I was in front of him.
“He’s intense, but he’s trying.” I said truthfully.
“Are you happy?” Asked my dad with concern.
“I am.” I said confidently. “I can’t lie though, at first, he was really intimidating… but he is kind, and he’s my mate.” I said looking at the table.
“I heard Zeke said you two stopped by his place.” Said my dad.
“Yeah! It was fun. We walked through the shopping district, and we both got coffee before he was challenged at the border… Zeke is a bad gossip though. I barely said two words to him, and he talked about how everyone in the neighborhood saw me… but couldn’t make out who was the new Luna, Right in front of Alpha Kaiden.” I said with a small smile, and my mom kind of giggled a little bit.
“That’s Zeke for you.” She said shaking her head. “I hope he didn’t embarrass you too much.”
“…At least he didn’t call me Clippy too much like he used to when I was a pup.” I said, hating that nickname. I got it from how I used to say my name as a kid.
“He told us that Alpha didn’t say anything?” he asked.
“Not really until after he said what he was going to.” I admitted.
“He was trying to see what the pack thought of him since Zeke said his back was turned.” Said dad.
“I know. But realistically dad no one would tell him stuff like that so casually either.” I said with a small smile, but he didn’t return it.
Dad looked stern, but I know he was worried for me. He’s seen all the terrible things that my mate does, and he didn’t speak his mind, but I could tell it in his face. He was probably worried for Zeke too, but I don’t think he would attack someone for gossip…
“I just don’t know how to word how I feel.” He sipped the tea mom made to pause a second. “I’m proud you shifted, and that you’re Luna. You are the Alpha female of our pack; what father wouldn’t have pride in that? It’s just that he’s the-” Mom cut him off.
“He’s intense like our pup said. Anthony stop worrying; they had a… rocky start but they’re young.” She smiled. “Don’t listen to him; he’ll only make you nervous. What he does to rogues may be… violent, but he would never lay a finger on his true mate.” She said confidently, though an awkward silence fell in the kitchen. They linked each other, and mom won, but I had a link sent my way too.
[Where are you, little mate?] I heard in my head; Alpha sounded calm, but I could feel the anxiety for my safety through the connection. I didn’t think to tell him, because when I wanted to go somewhere, I would just go. My parents never bothered to ask, because they knew I was safe.
[I’m at my parents’ house.] I said calmly. There was a long pause. Honestly, I would like for him to have had a real conversation with my parents, but in his mind, I was his; he needed no permission.
[I will come for you.] He commanded. He was firm in what he said, so I was conflicted on speaking up. I was enjoying sharing with my parents, and I know they wanted to talk longer.
“Are you okay?” I heard my mother’s concerned voice, breaking me from my thoughts.
“He said he was going to come get me.” I said, concerned for my parents’ sake. I was the one that put them in this predicament, yet, it felt good to be needed, to be wanted, sought after, and loved.
The room was awkwardly quiet again until there was a knock at the door. It was Alpha, and everyone knew it, the air was thick with tension on his mood, seeing as how you could smell the metallic blood from under the door.
“I got it.” Said dad.
“I’ve come to pick up my mate, move aside,” he said bluntly, with a small growl.
I gently grabbed his hand to calm him, because I had already figured that would be his reaction. He was Alpha, and to him I was his; the only thing scolding him would do was to make him worse, though Shimmer seemed to like it. To her, he’d declared another claim on us, and my parents didn’t take it seriously, because it wasn’t aggressive.
For that I was thankful, because I didn’t want friction between them. Dad got my bag for me, and Alpha took it.
“What’s all this?” He asked curiously, putting an arm around me, and we began to walk toward the pack. We waved goodbye at each other, and he waited patiently for me to respond.
“I got my clothes.” I said seeing him change his slight frown to a gentle smile. Lady Moon damnit all, he looked good. His muscular, scarred chest was bare, and his gaze was amber yellow with red flecks dancing in the almost Autumn sun. He put on a devilish grin, noticing me eyeing him. I blushed looking away. I felt his hungry eyes still on me, like I was a prize he’d won at the lunar festival.
I glanced up to see he was looking a little puzzled too. “Why didn’t you just buy more?” he said, looking at the overstuffed bag. It never dawned on me that I could, plus tutors don’t make much.
“Tutors don’t make much?” he laughed, air quoting me, “I really am the luckiest man in the world, babygirl.” He said amused.
