Book 2: Chapter 59

Heidi
Both John and Aikesh went too far… I saw what they did to each other, but I couldn’t believe it. It felt like I was watching a movie. I wanted it to be fake like one too. I wished that someone would jump out from behind the hospital bed and yell that it was a prank, but I knew it wasn’t. Sparkle was upset, not saying anything… I couldn’t blame her. She didn’t want this fight to happen in the first place.
He’d gotten clawed in the stomach. He was in surgery, and Aikesh needed his windpipe reconstructed. His throat was torn up so bad I think it would affect his speech… but that was the least of their worries with all the broken ribs and bones they had... They both lost so much blood too. Thankfully, both their fathers were there to help with that.
“Heidi, it’s midnight, John won’t be up for at least a full 24 hours.” Said Luna, holding her mate’s hand.
“I can’t. He’s so hurt… how can you two be so calm?” I asked.
“He is a Warrior little one. I worry, but it was their choice. As leaders… we must push forward… but as parents… I would be crying if not for knowing the Lady will keep my boy in this world a little longer.” Said Luna. I wanted so desperately to use my spells on him, but I didn’t know anything that would help him.
No one would let me heal them with my magic since they both were so close to death. They were scared that any disruption to them would cause them to die… and they weren’t wrong. I could only heal; not mend. Cuts and bruises were fine, but major surgery worthy injuries could not be healed by someone who wasn’t a true healer. He is so quiet. My wolf was upset he breathed so lightly.
John’s breathing was so shallow… like he was about to die. I shed tears on his bed, not many wolves recover from being disemboweled… they went too far. I felt a gentle tug on one of my curls.
Come Heidi. If you will trust me… I know of something we can do if it will make you happy…. The Master will save him. I can see his soul untether from his body, but I don’t know why. Squeaked my rat…
“Ok.” I told him, letting him ride my shoulder.
Go to the store and buy a cupcake. No, two cupcakes. He instructed, and it was only a 15 minute walk, so I did it. The night air was nice, but John wouldn’t feel it with me…. I had to snap out of this. He was going to be ok, and I knew what my rat was up to… I was desperate enough to go along with it….
At the store, there was a line of burly Warriors, who didn’t notice me until the tallest one saw Rahrraam. He was a blond haired, brown eyed man. He had an unlit cigarette in his mouth, so at least he had the decency to do it outside.
“Ew, that thing isn’t allowed in here!” The Warrior said in disgust, and I frowned at him. He didn’t deserve that treatment, and for him, I would be defensive.
“He goes were I go.” I said timidly, “…and he isn’t a thing… his name is Rahrraam.”
“He’s a filthy rat. Go get a dog or something.” He commented rudely leaving, but I growled at him. He was completely unphased.
“If my god would have wanted to give me a dog, he would have given me a dog. He gave me a rat, one with more personality than you. I would like to buy 2, no 3 red velvet cupcakes.” I said to the cashier, who rung it up without a problem. It was $7.34 for three.
“Have a good night, Luna.” Said the shopkeeper glaring at the Warrior. He was only a pack wolf, and probably didn’t want trouble. He handed them to me in a small box, and I handed him ten dollars, letting him keep the change.
“Luna?” Asked the Warrior to himself. “Shit I’m from BreezeMoon I didn’t know!” he tried to follow me, but I growled at him again, and this time he seemed scared. Now I wasn’t just a little girl... now I was Alpha’s mate.
“There isn’t anything to worry about. I’m not going to tell on you if that’s what you’re thinking, but you do owe Rahrraam an apology.” I said holding my box close. I knew he could smell I was nervous. I didn’t like being followed.
“Forgive me your highness… I didn’t realize.” He said quietly, though I felt it was a lie… I’d been in this pack a long while now, and I even visited his pack. Plus I was the only half witch on the council… he knew. He just didn’t like me, but I was by myself, and it was late at night so I wouldn’t confront him about it.
“You’re forgiven, just go.” I demanded, and he left…
Come then. Now that he is gone, let’s go home…. And thank you. That took more courage than I thought you had. He patted my curls.
I ran walked home, seeing that Garnet’s hands had blood on them, and Ann was cleaning them but I wouldn’t question it. He smelled of the Warrior, and I’d forgotten that there were Shadows throughout the town, watching not only me, but grandma as well. We both waved a hello to them, and I gave them a warning before going in my room.
“I’m going to summon my patron god. If you hear anything don’t try to open the door I’m fine.”
“Awe I thought those were for us.” Pouted Garnet.” Put in a good word for me.”
“Well good luck… Wait now that I’m a werewolf can I do that with the Pale Lady?” Asked Ann.
“I don’t know her summoning ritual, but every Lunar Fest, they light a bonfire to give her offerings... and it doesn’t work that way with him.” I said with a smile, going in my room.
I heard her say ‘good enough’ but I had to prep the floor… I could do it outside but if someone saw I could make trouble for Alpha Ron… It wasn’t exactly legal to worship the Horned One. But I was just asking a favor…
I followed Rahrraam’s instructions, because my mate was getting weaker… I could feel it. I lit a candle, and put it on the floor. I also held the cupcakes while he drew the Horned One’s symbol on the floor with a pencil. I took a deep breath.
I stomped the floor three times. “I summon Zuviel, the Horned One… May he accept my offering, and have mercy for being summoned without permission.” I said and the lights went out, except the candle.
“You should have put a plate under that little one. Wax will melt into the hardwood.” I heard a voice chastise lightly.
“Sorry sir.” I said quietly, but he patted my head.
“What is it?” He sat on the floor cross legged, because he was too tall with his horns.
“I um, I wanted to give you these… sorry it isn’t something flesh…” I still had the box in my hand, and I gave him one nervously… I’d never given an offering before, and I was listening to Rahrraam. He smiled. He patted the floor for me to sit, and I did. I was nervous… but something about him tonight was different. I didn’t feel the soul crushing aura of death and fear. It made it easier to talk to him.
“I gladly accept your offering; it is rare someone gives this old god sweets. It is always raw meat, or worse. But know you never Have to give me anything my vessel. Speak your troubles; I know you have a few.” He grumbled, extending claws and examining the miniature treat in his massive hands… next time I think I’ll bring a large cake. He delicately peeled the wrapping, and started licking the frosting.
“I thank you for all you’ve done for me, but I have one request… John’s in the hospital… and I know he’s slipping. I can feel it… please I beg you to save him.” I asked with a bowed head, but I heard eating.
“Huh? Oh the boy.” He said licking his fingers. “He is not dying, Lulliba has him. He will return possibly aggressive temporarily from the power she gives him. Thank you for the sweet my vessel…. Can I have the other one?” He asked pointing to mine. My rat was making a pig of himself. I hadn’t touched mine, but I gladly gave it.
“Thank you master.” I bowed, but I don’t think he was paying attention…
“Mmhm.”
“Master, my mistress will embark on a journey soon… I humbly ask that I may receive a more useful form. There was also a small incident a few minutes ago, and I was powerless to truly do anything.” He asked speaking again… I wondered how.
He looked serious at me, staring me in the eyes. It was a gaze I couldn’t keep, but he put a finger under my chin for me to look at him. “Little one, my small, cracked vessel. I must tell you something you need to hear. I will give You the power to unleash his true nature. However, once it is done, it cannot be undone. If he turns on you, and brings you back to me, it would be his right because you would not be strong enough to control him. Do you accept this?” he asked.
“Yes sir.” I said quietly. He smiled, putting his frosting covered thumb on my forehead. It burned for a second, then felt cold.
“Good. Rahrraam, it may be your right, but if I see her before her time, I will make you suffer.” His glare was harsh, and his words were clear. “You will suffer until I am bored of your screams, and then I will deconstruct your soul piece by piece. There will be no more flesh when I am done, but you will feel every moment until there is nothing left. You know this.” He said seriously, and I could feel the dread stir in my soul. “Fucking damnit. See what you made me do.” He growled, and the lights came on flickering. His power was great enough that he shook the frame of the house with his anger, and I kneeled as low as I could. Sparke freaked out with me, because his aura was hostile. I could see the glow of his eyes on the hardwood.
I KNEW this was a bad idea!
That kind of fear on the soul couldn’t be explained, only felt.
“I’m so sorry master! Please forgi-” He got cut off.
“…. Be glad you are not in Tartaron right now you little shit.” Said his voice, completely livid, but he ran in small circles.
“I’m going to lose my job!” He repeated in a panic, but I scooped him up.
“It’s ok. Why did he disappear? And why was he so angry...?” I asked.
“The candle hides his presence, His sign holds his place in this plane, and so long as he’s calm, he could have been here much longer. He left so no one would notice him, and ultimately get you in trouble with the Church’s attention. I imagine he also wanted another sweet…I need to absorb this residual energy. I can’t fight as I am right now.” he spoke. It actually scared me, as his voice when not heard in my head was... intimidating.
“I have another question.” I blurted.
“We are bound for eternity.” He said, though his voice was fading. He had his hand-like paws on the floor, and motioned for me to blow out the candle.
“… Why do you sound so big?” I asked, but he snorted.
“Because I am. I am the Flayer. Before all this, I tormented the damned, and captured souls who thought they could hide. False vampirism, litches, undeath, or my favorite, forced rebirth. I would drag them to the Master, and he would feast on their torment I wrought.” He said proudly. Me or my wolf were a little nervous at how happily he spoke of torment and torture…
“What of me… will he do that to me?” I asked quietly, but he wiped the frosting off his face.
…. What kind of dumbass question is that? He created you out of love, and when you die, you will command all under me, as I am under you. My hope is that we work together capturing evil souls so the world can rest easier. He squeaked. I imagine you would not torment any, but you needn’t worry of that. I am here to aid you in this life and the next.
“That sounds… kind of noble.” I mumbled.
It is. We demons get a bad rap because to us, all who are not marked by Master are nourishment. We also work for the most demonized creator, pun intended. If not for how boring this place is, there would be more of us here.
“Then why are you?” I asked. He hesitated.
That is a question for another time. Absorbing all this demonic energy to hide it from the others is very taxing for this small body. He said going into my pocket to go to sleep.
He made no effort to ask me about giving him his abilities back like I thought he would, but I would eventually… I worried though. What would he become, and could I control him? He may not hurt me because of the Horned One’s words, but that didn’t mean everyone else was safe.
