Chapter 96

Kaiden
The guards watching the humans bowed, and I gave him a small nod, going into the room. It was a couple, two kids, and a fat yellow dog with floppy ears. The mother held her two small children, they looked about 2 and 3 respectively. The husband held the mother, and had the blanket we provided around them, choosing to remain cold.
I walked in the room and it immediately whined in submission, tail between its legs, but got in front of the children. I see why they called. We don’t detain small children. This is a prison not a horror show. Noah followed my lead and seemed to get that this was serious, and his playfulness disappeared into an officer, sitting cross legged next to where I would.
I rubbed my hand through my hair and sat in a small yellow plastic chair. “Mama,” said the little girl, scared of me. I didn’t let it show, but it stung. She was only a little older than my pups, I was really getting soft, they’d be already detained, the secret of our lives must be kept… but I would indulge this fleeting, petty thought of mercy.
“Leave the room.” I commanded the guards, who in fear left quickly, thinking that I was going to eat them in front of Noah.
“Alright,” I say casually, turning down the intimidation. “Tell me your names, and your story.”
“My name is Nicholas Thomas, and this is my wife Mary, my daughter Willow, and my son Bobby.” He paused, holding his wife’s hand. She was shaking staring at me… I just have that effect on others. “We were driving, following that damn GPS and got lost. It kept telling me to get off and back on the interstate, so I said to hell with it and tried finding our way myself.” He squeezed his wife’s hand more.
“Where were you headed?” Noah questioned sipping his coffee.
“Bison.” Stuttered the wife. “We just moved here sir… I never knew ….” She shook with every word, but couldn’t finish.
“…. That werewolves exist,” I finished for her calmly, and let my eyes flash red. “and we are very secretive about it.” I sucked in a deep breath through my nose and exhaled out my mouth. What the fuck was I to do with them? I didn’t want to detain them, though…
/We kill them. This is very simple Kaiden./ Said Rakaam flatly,
I growled in frustration, shaking the glass in the room. I had never felt so conflicted. “Get me some confirmation on these stories.” I growl loudly, hearing a shaky ‘yes Alpha.’ through the door.
“Kaiden chill.” Said Noah, rubbing my back. I really didn’t like being touched by anyone other than my mate, and I gave him a weak warning growl. He probably didn’t know.
“Please! Don’t kill my babies!” Squealed the woman, clasping her children tightly, who now cried because of their mother’s fear. It hurt my ears.
I put my elbows on my knees and put my clawed hands on my face. “Please. Stop. Screaming.” I say calmly, but I glared at the woman. She gulped while her little ones were still sobbing.
“I don’t kill children. None of us do. I don’t know if I should release you, given that the risk for my pack is too great…. If even one of you tells the wrong person, or converse about this and the wrong person hears… so many innocent pups- children and elderly will be slaughtered…”
“We would never do that.” Said the woman.
“We don’t know that.” Said Noah. I was surprised he wasn’t taking their side.
“Do you know how many children under the age of 4 are in this pack? How many elderly, and disabled, that could not run if you blabbed your gums?” I growl.
They shook their heads. “356 children under the age of 4, elderly, and disabled.” I growl. “We do not leave this territory. We do not start wars with humans, yet almost every instance of releasing one out of mercy leads to an entire pack full of women and children burned to the ground….”
“I swear I won’t tell a soul.” Blurted the man.
“Talk is cheap. All it takes is ONE conversation. ONE slip of our location and so many innocents will die, because I didn’t kill or detain a few humans….” I leaned my head back in my chair and stare at the ceiling. There was a creak of the door.
“Alpha, the man is an architect, he is expected at Crestview Construction tomorrow, handing me a manila folder to speed read.
“Out.” I command, and he swiftly left.
“Alpha’s playing with his food again… poor bastards…” I heard him whispering to another guard, loud enough that I know the humans heard. I growled, letting them know that I could hear them, and they screamed.
“I didn’t know you ate them.” Noah said with a frown.
“Only sometimes and right now I’m not hungry.” I grumble, locking eyes with the husband. He shifted on the bench to put himself in front of his wife as much as possible. They did not understand my body language. I looked at the ceiling one more time. I am Alpha, no one would question me, but I am putting the pack at risk on a feeling. I take pity on this young couple with small pups, Rakaam let me suffer, as he thought I was being an idiot. Noah let out a huff.
“…. Kaiden just detain them. I know you want to release them because of your mixed feelings of me, but you have to think of your own….” Noah said seriously.
“Even if I shift and eat them in front of you?” I growl looking at him in the eyes. He seemed unphased even though I let my eyes become red.
“You do realize that I’ve seen Jerold rip out someone’s spine and make it into a necklace and ate them while they still screamed right? He’s 13 feet tall, try me.” He said casually, leaning back in his chair. “You feel ‘weird’ because I’m human. I get that. Most supernaturals do, but Kaiden, I can’t in good conscious tell you to let them go if it could mean that I get a call later that there’s over 300 orphans and only the goddess knows how many wolves to find another pack for.” He said, leaning back until only 2 legs of the chair were on the floor. “Not to mention what would happen to your abnormally small mate… do you think other packs would treat her right?” He interrogated and I growled at him…. He was right but I didn’t want to hear it.
“Do you think her wolf would be easily controlled after being Luna?” He said with a small frown. “I’m right and you know it.”
I blinked twice. “I thought you were the good guard.” I say, unable to question his logic.
“I am, but I just want to help you.” He said looking at the dog, then the woman. “I can see how clean it is, I know you guys won’t like it here, but it seems safe enough.” He said casually.
“Mates are not separated, 3 meals a day, innocent humans may roam the human side freely.” I said casually.
He nodded. “To be honest though, I’m glad I make you merciful, but concerned that if you’re soft, that some human might take advantage.” He said pointing to my heart.
“How can you side with monsters?” Said the husband full of fear and anger. He shielded his wife completely now.
“Because as an officer, I’ve seen the ugly, the death, and rot in this world from both sides. And that you call them ‘monsters’ tells me that you didn’t listen to anything Alpha said.” He said with a perfect growl. It made the man nervous.
“You’re not human you’re one of them too! If you were, you would side with us!” He screamed, causing his dog to whine. “Release us! You can’t hold us against our will.” He demanded, thinking that mortal laws applied here. They didn’t the moment he refused to read the signs posted every hundred feet for half a mile.
“Actually, I am, but that isn’t important. What is important is that you made the mistake of being an ass. You’re not in a position to make demands you entitled prick.” He said still leaning back.
I had had enough. I called the guards, who already had the Secret Police here to pick up the children, and the adults got detained. Noah recognized the men who showed up and they faced him and bowed, putting their fist to their hearts in what looked like a kind of saluting. “Alpha.” They said respectfully and he gave them a nod. I was confused. They bowed to him, nearly kneeling. They smelled of cow…. They seemed nervous to be around him, and the wheels in my head began to turn.
Jerold was a King.
I closed my eyes to hide how pissed I was. I had been tricked. “Noah, when were you going to tell me you were not just Jerold’s mate, but a king’s mate?” I say without growling. If I did, I would probably get attacked.
“Never, because what’s the fun in that? Also, guys, just call me Noah… I’ve said that a million times already.” He said with a small smile, but they were serious.
“No, your highness, the Battle Bull will have our hides if we disrespect you.”
