Book 2 Chapter 41
Heidi
“He’s probably already on a plane. This report is 10 hours old. However, the claws of my mate reach across the waters. Send word to the Secret Police that there is a fugitive that needs to be expedited.” She said casually, handing the paper to me, but I saw a vision…. It was cold and snowy wherever he was, and he was alone.
“Um.” I said quietly, and all eyes turned to me… I hated that. It was too much attention, but grandma patted my back. I didn’t know if it was her powers, or was it her just being a grandma that calmed me enough to say something. “Um… I saw he was somewhere cold.” I said shyly, and my grandmother’s eyes flashed black.
“He’s looking for Grendel’s Gauntlets. I remember the pup asking me about them.” She snarled.
“What?” I asked a little confused, but she smiled at me gently. She stroked my hair.
“Well little one, not many wolves know this old story… but Grendel, the First lycanthrope was born from the power of the Moon Goddess herself… She made him, putting him on this earth as an adult, and gave him those gauntlets to protect himself from other races. It gave him armored paws, and his claws were pure silver…. It took the form of a pendant when not in use. One so ordinarily boring that one wouldn’t know that it had power if they saw it.”
“A little chain with a tiny disk, right?” I asked and she seemed surprised.
“Yes…. And he gave it to your grandfather when he named him king… he loved his pup enough that he gave him his gift of the goddess…. But Ash was young, he didn’t understand what he held. He threw them into the mountains after his first defeat from the Horned Lion. They had no effect on him because she would not allow harm to her own son from her weapons…. Even for her sake. He may never find such an artifact though, it’s silver. It’s likely too tarnished to see in the dark earth.” She said quietly.
“But grandma I dreamt for almost a year that he does, and he fights John over it!” I yelled and held my hands to my mouth. What have I done! Now I have changed the future by saying it in this room of women who will tell their power-hungry mates!
“John is not ready.” Said Luna Aemi.
“He may have to be. As it stands Heidi’s visions are almost never wrong. He’s already in Russia, likely about to find it if her vision is true. Well, he will have anyway by the time any of us get there. Our only real hope is that no one knows how to use the claws, except Grendel, and my mate.” She mumbled, putting her index finger to her chin.
“Do you think Grendel will give him that knowledge?” Asked Luna Aemi.
“Grendel will see his heart, and rip it out. He was never one for games.” She said, linking I think grandpa.
He came, along with Alpha Ron, Alpha Wisp, and John. They all seemed stern, but Alpha Wisp spoke first. “My Queen, allow me to go after him. He’s gone too far, and I feel partly responsible… I was the one who told him the tale.” He said somberly.
“I don’t think so. He asked me about it years ago, though I thought nothing of it.” She said sternly, and there were murmurs of agreement.
“No, Wisp, I hear your thoughts. This is too much for you.” Said grandpa, glaring at him. “And in my heart, I know you are needed in the region I placed you. Your kin must watch over the Sky Eater.” He crossed his arms.
“Alpha, allow me to retrieve my son… if you go, you will kill him Your Highness…” Said Ron, but grandpa was silent along time. He sighed.
“Ronitus, my most trusted council. I do not think I make the right decision… but he is your son. If you find him, he may yet receive sentencing, instead of a grave.” He said quietly, and I was surprised he would allow it… if Alpha Ron dies then I don’t think he would have anyone he would ever trust sit in his seat….
“Sweet little one, do not worry for me.” He patted my hair. “I know now that if I die, I will leave behind someone my Alpha could depend on, even if he is a little green.” He said with a soft smile.
“Are you sure you want to do this?” Asked Luna Aemi. He walked to her and held her tightly, kissing her on the top of the head., and I noticed Brutus come in… he looked legitimately upset.
“He could not best me, nor could I kill him…. but he needs to be taken in for what he did to you, his own mother… to his own pack.” He whispered. “And I will not risk our youngest for something I was supposed to take care of millennia ago.” He growled a little, but John looked upset.
“Father you speak of me as if I am not here. I know I’m not strong enough yet… but maybe let me do it when I am? I don’t have any attachment to him.” He snarled, and he radiated power that I didn’t know he had.
“Ron the boy’s right. The King Must have you here…. I am needed on the continent…. Brutus is not of Ancient Blood. My pups were sparring mates with yours, and likely see each other as littermates… Your pup would be the best bet.” Said Alpha Wisp, but Luna Aemi protested.
“My Lord, he is my youngest boy… the only child left I am allowed to hold. Please…” She ran to John, hugging her, but he stood there firm with whiskey eyes.
“Mother, I hate to say it, but this is destiny. I have dreamt I would fight him before I knew his face….” He snarled
“I’m inclined to agree with the boy. He has no attachment, and should he be able to beat Wisp’s eldest in say, six months, then he should be able to defeat Herrakken and bring him here.” Said Brutus, getting a disapproving look from his mate.
Alpha Wisp pinched his nose, growling a little. “I thought I would never say it, but he’s right.”
“…Why are you even here?” Snarled Alpha Ronitus.
“Simple, he is a threat. If he kills you, I will have a pup as my better. If he kills the king, our people Will break the peace from his power trip…. And restart a war that shed enough blood to wake the Old Ones. I’m not stupid. There is no point in having power if there are none left to rule.” He grumbled.
“… I hate to agree with you too… but you’re right…. My son is out for blood. Alpha, is it possible to figure out how to use the claws?” He asked, but grandpa shook his head.
“Yes, but it is very slim. It is not something one tells you; it is something you feel. He will not be worthy.” He said confidently, and I hoped he was right. Magical items were not to be played with….and I was still suspicious of Alpha Brutus.
“If this doesn’t work, then the world will change for the worse.” Grumbled Brutus. It was like he was hiding something… but sitting next to the King so closely for so long, I bet he could hide his real intentions.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he wanted to help only to get the gauntlets himself.
“Then it is settled. John will train enough to take my blood, and train again until he can best Wisp’s son or better.” declared my grandfather. “And I am selfish, but I will also be taking Heidi.” He smiled, getting my hand, and grandma protested.
“My mate you cannot do this!” She stomped her feet, and he grinned.
“I am King.” He walked away with me, leaving my mate with his parents and my steamed grandma.
“Your majesty… that’s a dangerous game.” Warned Alpha Ron with a chuckle still in the Luna’s council room.
“Oh, I know.” He smiled, walking with me down the hall.
“Grandfather, where are we going?” I asked, but he was quiet. He didn’t walk fast as he held my hand, and I recognized that this was the way to the gardens.
“Sparkle has not said anything to you has she?” He asked, and I thought about it. She hadn’t really said much, but I thought she was sleepy.
“No sir.” I said quietly, having Omegas open the doors for us, and the garden was nice as ever. Three stood by the white table that my grandma always sits at, and he motioned for me to have a seat with him.
“You are not in trouble. We are out here for Sparkle. She is worried for you; you push yourself too hard. Worried for your friends, for your mate, and sad because she misses the fun you had in LapisMoon. This place upsets you; it is why I know you should go home soon….” He said patting my head. “Nini, bring my pup some tea.”
