Book 3: Chapter 81

Xaxas
The girls gave goodbyes to Tiffany, and Zayde did his best to be steeled. He had faith in her, of course, but he didn’t want her hurt. I said nothing to him, reading what the Pit delivered, unnoticed, meaning this was meant to be private… He may as well throw the sinners in a blender the way he’s amped up the punishment….
The message I received told me no progress had yet been made, and I am to aid in hell’s management a little longer. He rules… but he rules too harshly. The whip is to the backs of those who’s yokes should be 2 pounds, not 200…
The screams could be heard from here. I resisted going down for a taste. I’m sure the seasoning has just the *right* amount of existential hopelessness sprinkled on top.
He is the darkest god, one who truly does not give a single fuck about really anything or anyone…until mother.
Before her, Men Knew Fear. It did not matter their innocence or guilt…. It did not matter because he stomped any within his gaze. All cried and wailed under hooves he now made feet. Great rending claws are replaced with mortal ones for mother’s sake. For her, he steps lightly, and gives mercy… for his love of me, he gave me a fourth of Tarteron on a whim, my brothers too.
I did not ask, nor take it…. It was given.
This Does Not Happen.
Yet here I sit, being hosted by his peoples, and they adore me as if I am their son.
The Children of Arviel would never receive a portion of Haven…. Nor would he ask a son to sit in his stead while he deals with the mess he’d made…
But all of us have a bad habit of having mortal attachment to our favorites. These are his favorite peoples, of all the creatures he’s made, his Dark Witches hold the most favor. Even when Gulteer defied him…. That he not only *lives* but also rules *anything* is a testament to that.
I personally don’t care either way, but it is nice seeing Tiffany warm up to us. Heidi’s kid holds my favor for enlightening me on the plight of my dragons, and helping them as best as she could. The addition of Theo as an inner beast takes her fear away. She no longer worries I’ll punish her if she just calls me my damn name.
But I get that too. She’s just a little-bity mortal, one who can physically see the magic I radiate.
And I wasn’t doing myself favors at my true height, I sat in father’s chair. I am his eldest. When occupied, all duties of flesh may fall on me. I’m birthing and blessing his children, while doing the same for mine. I didn’t realize ‘just coming to a party’ would turn into responsibility, but it isn’t a bad thing.
I get to be with Harmony, and cheer her up.
This party was nice, and with my wife here, I’m really glad I stayed… What little anger I had left, was melted by my songbird. How bittersweet it is that she came, feeling lonely after work. Now… now the food was exquisite, since I wasn’t so agitated. It was handmade, from scratch… but most importantly, from the heart.
And to my heart, I held my mate. Her sorrow is my despair… her joy is my delight. And right now, she wouldn’t say it, but I knew because she plays with Bagel nearly every off day…. Her motivation for teleportation initially was giving that pup pets.
Harmony didn’t want to bother her grandfather Kaiden, because their pack still recovered from me waving my hand over it, and spiriting away Bagel. She somehow feels responsible for that, like *she* had anything to do with my adjustment of the cosmos…
All the gods, all of them, like that little dog. She is the most favored mortal that has *ever* been born…. She’s even got a spot in the Pantheon Discord and the group chat mother and the Earth goddess share with their husbands… She’s famous.
That little dog, if she was smart enough to ask, could get a free wish from those two especially…  I can rightly say as the man who judges *all* hell bound mortals…. I’ve never been asked to save a soul so fervently….
And how could I deny such a request?
“I know she’ll succeed.” Said Asanguis. He held his mate as I held mine. Harmony… that she wasn’t so talkative made me worry about her. She was still upset about Bagel, Izzy too. She was returned but still a little sluggish.
I mean… how could the little dog not be? Bagel was fashioned into a sacrifice, but I made sure she felt no pain. She simply died while playing with Kaiden. She didn’t even know she was culled. But…. To bring her back… *something* had to replace her.
So father offered up his dog, a great sacrifice indeed for a simple little brown pit mx. Now Hell has no guard…. But such a position takes time to fill…
I don’t know if I want to put Norman on that task too or not?
No… him guarding world ending secrets on healthy worlds is more important….
No mortal could outright escape hell without help, but without a loyal, untemptable servant at the River…. Like … a soul *could* make their way into the In-Between… then use its vastness to get to another world…
Or worse, sneak into an afterlife they didn’t earn.
Maybe I should fix this now?
No I can’t….
A soul for this may need to be born, not printed and plopped at the gates. Plus, I need father to be clear headed to collaborate something like that with me… All four of us will need to be present, and mentally sound. His mate being upset at him, and us trying to help resolve it makes this the worst time to try.
“I know too.” I said adjusting myself in this small mortal seat.
We’re sending one of *father’s* mortals out to do a task, not our own. I’m pretty sure if we murder his project on accident, he’ll kill us.
Harmony will kill me for getting her cousin hurt.
Isabelle will never forgive me. Like, this is *Heidi’s* kid, the mortal who sounds like mother… The mortal who father made *with* mother during their separation.
Heidi is… hmm… Heidi to father would be akin to a cracked, yet priceless vase. That bloodline holds favor to mother’s Herald…. Heidi is accepted by Kaiden, thus, to us, she too is of Grendel’s blood, albeit through adoption. With wolves, adoption doesn’t matter. Even the First Wolf asks my Herald, Zytherian if they do well.
Her soul holds no worth because mortal money *can’t* attain it… Nor gold or silver…
So as bad as it sounds, I will use this connection to hopefully encourage her to at least listen to Kaizen.
No wish would ever change the alignment. He would never give a single drop of that bloodline away… That Tiffany helps *will* please mother, although I don’t think the others realize any of this.
It hadn’t started yet, but I sensed another god, one who decided to go to my home swiftly, as if they’d done something they shouldn’t.
“I’ll be right back.” I said pissed that I was interrupted. “What the Fuck man?!” I yelled in general. He was already gone, and in his place was my old car….
The sun was setting on the crushed, soggy Jeep…It was already covered in rust and barnacles, and sea creatures seemed to have burrowed in the upholstery in such a short time.
In the center of the condo parking lot was my sad little crumpled up Jeep… and a wet ass note.
‘I don’t want it anymore.
\-Posidion’
“A note?” I said sending word to my Herald to make him bring his watery ass up here.
“I didn’t Realize it would pop under the pressure!” Said The Water God.
“How did you, the LORD OF WATER, AND THE OCEAN, not know how the OCEAN works?” I yelled, pointing my clawed fingers in his stupid face!
I then laughed at the absurdity, while he  stood there offended and slack-jawed. He knew I was right.
“You know what sir, you have a point.” He bowed his head. “But if you want to win it back proper, we could play cards again?”
“I have one better.” I said with a grin. “Come watch a mortal commit a feat of strength for my mother’s favor.”
“I take it I’m to wager against the mortal?” I nodded, and we shook hands.
The elderly humans here… they saw.
They saw a 12 foot, horned god yelling at a 9ft man with pearlescent skin…..
Oops.
It isn’t like the generations that come to die here don’t already *know* but I wasn’t trying to advertise the eldest son of Hell’s King is on the top floor…
“Evening Mr. Nox. I’ll send my daughter to get your pie.” Waved Maybell.
Now that the sun was nearly completely down, they were packing up. They were at their usual table by the door, playing bridge. It’s why I only allow elderly ownership, or their families. Once they live here, they gain Second Sight because of my protection magic on the land, but I don’t do anything to or for them. Not magically.
They belong to Arviel, and I want them to go to their maker without any blemishes. Once you start giving favors and doing miracles, it can ruin their shot at Haven. It’s like I’m taking them in, which I don’t want.
*Plus they feed me.*
“Wow…. 1st name basis.” Said Posidion. “And I thought my mortals were bad.”
“Oh?” I was curious now. “Hey Maybell.” I waved.
“I have a boathouse off the coast of Sicily. All the elderly sailors know but they don’t bother me.”
“I bet they give you some fresh ass fish.” I commented, not bothering to suppress myself. People from the street only see two normal guys talking in front of a *slightly* wrecked car.
“I made this for you dear.” She beamed. Maybell thinks I’m a giant, and for it she makes Giant Food.
I was handed gooseberry pie, a flavor I’d not had yet. I’ll take it with me; I’m sure Bryson will want some. He isn’t big on sweets, but I don’t see gooseberries in human stores much.
