Book 2: Chapter 112

John
“You’re a DAY late.” Said Eskaal, listening to some scientific interview.
He had a notebook out, one filled with pages and pages of notes. They were at his feet, and some were open. Diagrams of different animals were on some of them, as if he fused multiple species together….
“A lot happened... I Tried coming yesterday, but Rogues tried to cross the border, my mate is sick, I have a council meeting soon too… yeesh.” I said sitting at his dining table. The moment I’d opened the door to the dungeon, he’d teleported me inside.
“I heard the gossip. Good job. Also, you should have gotten your number changed.” He teased.
“I know, I know.” I grumbled. I figured that was how he knew so much… but guards would have No idea about it. Though for peace, it was probably Better that he gets his itchy ears scratched.
Knowing him, if the chatter stopped, he’d make problems.
“Anyway, let’s get started.” He said hearing me. “Flesh magic is its own category of magic…. I still can’t believe I’m doing this. Get that one. I made it last night.” He started pointing to a book on the floor. I picked it up, and inside were hand drawn notes of various animal muscle and skeletal structures. “With it… one has the ability to create artificial life via elemental golems… or Real life in the form of fusing animals together. Which are you trying to do?” He asked interlacing his fingers.
“Whichever Heidi could use best.” I said sitting across from him.
“Then possibly a golem, the more difficult choice. It does not feel or think, but that would do better in my opinion.” He said thinking out loud. “So now I ask you, what do you define as a golem?” He asked pouring peppermint tea.
“You said it isn’t alive, so I’m guessing it’s ‘living’ because of magic.” I said sharing a cup with him. “Like a puppet that can move around on its own, and do simple tasks...?”
“Correct. The problem is that You don’t have any real magical ability, but your Earthen power should make you a fine assistant until I breathe life into it. That’s something you will never be able to do.”
“Then please, show me how to help.” I encouraged.
“Well, I should probably give you at least One lecture. Golems are tools. They are made of clay, magic, and the blood of the one commanding it. You’ll need a few other things too. You’ll need a small vile of your mate’s blood. I also assume you want it to be life-sized. It’s going to take a few days to make.”
“Days?” I interrupted.
“Yes Days. From what I can gather, she’d in suspended animation, meaning she’s fine. Go get a shovel and bring back I’d say…. Two, no three hundred pounds of dirt after that…. If you want it with the ability to regenerate or heal, you’ll also need something living as its core. That will be something small you would place where the heart would be, and I’ll use its life essence to start the process. I suggest getting one of the rodent pests from my garden.”
“I could have brought all that on the Way here!” I complained and he smiled.
“Then I suggest you Read that notebook and come back with everything you need mortal.” He said interlacing his fingers.
“You’re enjoying this.” I hissed with narrowed eyes.
“Yes I am.” He grinned. “I made a deal, now I Have to follow through. You’re learning a skill you can’t even use, and I’m getting entertainment.”
I tried opening the door to leave, but it was a prison cell after all, and I didn’t have the key. I turned around to see him grin wider, and I huffed.
“You mean outside your cell room.” I said walking out of the other door in his kitchen.
“Everything you need is out there. Getting it will be the easy part. The Hard part is putting it together, and the hardest comes after that.” He said as I was a little shocked at the outdoor area…
Out there you could see the four corners of the prison cell if you looked up, however there was a mild, slightly cloudy sky and green grass. If not for the faint lines that defined this space, one would think that he had access to the outside world… You’d never think this was the bottom of a dungeon basement.
Out there was also his garden bed that had peppers, squash, tomatoes and other things, along with mason jars as if he were getting ready to pickle them. I found a shovel without any issue, and some garbage bags… and I started digging. That took only a small amount of time, though since this place was always day, it was hard to tell what time it was.
The next thing was to find a base… that also wasn’t hard. As nice as it looked out here, I did see a squirrel. There were no trees, but it made due with digging a hole near his garden. Like he said, that was easy. The hard part was catching the black squirrel without killing it.
He stood at the threshold of his door amused that I tried and repeatedly failed to catch it for at least an hour. It protested, trying to bite me, but I had it by the scruff when I finally snatched it. It squeaked angrily, but I figured the fire in him would be welcome.
“Now you’ll need the blood, and something to draw out your inner power. The necklace you wear holds lunar energy, that should be fine enough, and find a rock to bring to me. A gemstone, especially a dark one of any kind would be best. I’ll hold onto the ingredients; you bring back the rest. Oh, and a whole dead dear for the bones, antlers, and organs.” He encouraged, using magic to put the squirrel in a cage.
“Thank you for helping….” I said before he snapped his fingers.
“You should thank my constant pursuit of gossip.” He joked.
I blinked and I was outside the jail, though at least I wasn’t in the street. I made my way to the hospital, because to be completely honest… I wanted to check on her more than anything. They linked she was stable, and she smiled in her sleep when I saw her last…. But I still worried for her.
I also had two empty glass vials in my hand…. I would worry about Eskaal… but he gave his word. No matter how great or small, deals were honored… and without her blood, I assume that what I was about to make would only answer to me. That would do her no good.
‘Ah, Alpha.” Bowed the receptionist. “Dr. Sampson, the fae doctor, is waiting on you.” She said with a smile. She got up and led me to my mate’s private room. She laid there sleeping with the doctor reading silently to himself at her bedside….
To my knowledge, he was supposed to be one of the Best doctors in the supernatural world. He sat reading a fairly large book in hand made of black leather, and the pages were black… his scent was familiar, making my hair stand on the back of my neck. “Ah, there you are.” He said getting up to shake my wrist.
I didn’t understand why he looked like the Horned One…. The staff wouldn’t know that, but I did… he felt like him too when I shook his wrist. It made me wonder should I bow or not. Regardless, I closed the door and did anyway.
“Thank you for coming.” I told Dr. Sampson. There was No Way someone as old and powerful as the Horned One was here, yet alone pretending to be a physician.
“I’m only a tap away.” He said with a smile. “Tell me what’s going on with my patient today.” He said getting her chart off the wall, then sitting cross legged in front of my seat.
“It started a few months ago… The Church of the Light had one of their highest priests turn vigilante, and they raided our pack…. Heidi sacrificed her demon to save Me, and he saved not only her life, but others as well before he was shot with a full magazine of silver…. Then she was banished, and her demon killed for his heroism by the Horned One…. Like that Devastated her….” I saw him cringe.
“Was that all that happened?” He asked.
“No. For months she was a shell of herself, reading and staying in our pack office until she got the courage to try again….And what was Worse… she was denied… That was the last ritual she did. She hasn’t woken up since. I know physically she’s fine… but mentally she’s shattered.”
He hummed. “You’re right on her not waking up.” He confirmed. “She unfortunately will not wake until all her energy is resolved. Currently, her consciousness is like a laptop at 0%, but you have the charger in. So long as she’s got fluids, water, and food, she will stay this way.”
“I…. I have been working on a private project… One that might help…You make it sound as if she’s a vegetable.” I mumbled.
“She isn’t but You Have to tell me if I am to treat her. Anything you say will be confidential, nor reported.” He said looking me in the eyes. He was dead serious.
“You’re right…. I intend on making a golem using flesh magic…” I said quietly, but he laughed lightly.
“I would expect nothing less from a mate. Here… I thought to give this to her, but she won’t be able to use it in this state.” He tossed a dark blood red ruby. It was shaped like a teardrop, and fit in the palm of my hand. It looked almost like a shiny candy….
“What is this?” I asked.
“A perfect ruby from Hell itself. I got it as a payment many many years ago. When I heard I was seeing a Dark Witch, it was something I had to give her. I have no use for it, and I hate all the questions I get in my office from its energy.” He complained.
“Then I will take it.” I said with conviction.
“Good luck. Finish getting your supplies John.” I swear for only a moment I saw him show his true face when I walked out the door. It was only a Split Second and out the corner of my eye, but Ram’s Horns gave him away….
I left out of there knowing full well who he was, but I wouldn’t be so stupid as to confront him… I just didn’t get Why the Horned One chose to appear as a doctor…. Or why he seemed to like it.
