Chapter 88

Connor
I blinked twice. I held so much freedom in my hands. Any Beta would kill for this.
Five Mother Fucking Days Off!
I ran out my brother’s office and slapped the slip on my door. I had 5 whole days off, and I had no idea what to do with it all. I hadn’t had this much time off since my son was born, and I wouldn’t waste it. I had so many options, but the one that screamed my name the loudest was my mattress. I took the best nap that I ever had. Nancy spent the rest of the day with me after that, because Marcy offered to watch Jason for a while.
That next morning, I woke up at dawn. I hated that. I could wake up at 3pm and no one would care, but of course Titus still thinks he is Alpha. I sighed and snuggled my mate until she started to move. I think I did that with my intense staring, waiting for her to wake up.
“Connor… I love you but Goddess knows you’re weird.” She said with a small smile, and kissed me on the cheek.
It didn’t matter how long we were together, her affection sent me and my wolf wild. She rolled out of bed, and we took a shower together before checking on our pup. He was fine and still asleep, but hearing us come in woke him up. He was excited and full of energy, running down the stairs and straight to the toys. Heidi came down while the rest of the packhouse started to become alive. I made her some toast, eggs and ham. She quietly drank her juice and got on her broom as soon as she was out the door. I found that odd, but I wouldn’t bother her too much. She was a delicate kid, and I didn’t want to pressure her into telling me something if she wasn’t ready.
Kaiden and Luna came down with their pups, who immediately all ran to my son. They all wanted to play fight, but the boys let Izzy win. I could tell because my son, and Caleb are already taller than her, but they listen to her for leadership. They followed her to the other side of the living room where they had some stuffed toys to play pirate with. It was absolutely precious.
Kaiden took a double take at us, and frowned a bit. “Brother why are you still here? Go on vacation!” He said going to the key rack, tossing me my keys. “I got my nephew; just go before I change my mind.” He chuckled. I looked at the keys and thought about it, and I looked at Nancy, who already was halfway out the door. I ran behind her, and she got in the driver’s side. I passed her the keys.
She was always the speed demon, racing down the territory road out into the human world. “Where are we going?” I ask, looking at the speedometer.
“Nashvaile.” She said with a cheeky grin. Kaiden didn’t need me until Monday, and this was only a 4 hour drive south. I was happy as a clam taking a nap near my mate, who drove like she was in a Need for Acceleration Movie with Quadripple X. Fuck sleep was nice. I slept so hard that I stopped listening for threats. This was especially rare. I could count on my hands how much deep sleep I get in a given week.
I heard a growl, one of aggression.
I growled back louder at the idiot who would ruin nap time with my mate.
“Identify yourself.” Growled a voice. I blinked hard with the sunlight in my face, and the glare of 3 angry, but clearly intimidated patrol wolves came into view.
I yawned, showing my fangs. They always come out when I get comfortable, but showing them was a little rude. Now that I had a good look at them, they looked to be just a simple patrol unit. There was the burly captain, who was about 6’4 with blond hair. There was another blonde man who looked like him, but had brown eyes instead of blue, and the last one was a dark brown haired male, who was probably the one with the most stern look.
Nancy rummaged around looking for our papers, while unlocking the glove compartment so I could get our stuff. I was Beta. Or should I pull my Prince card? I would let what I left inside decide for me, but when it popped open the only thing I could do was frown.
It was empty.
“Damnit, I assume you guys want papers?” I grumble, and I get out my truck to talk. The squad leader’s eyes were green with his wolf, but I would not show Titus so easily.
“Who are you, and why have you driven so deeply into OrangeMoon territory?” He spoke. I looked around, we weren’t on the main road anymore, so Nancy must have come to get directions or respite. We don’t trust human hotels if we can help it, but usually we have that kind of thing set up in advance. She smelled wolf, and probably thought they would just let us through to their packhouse.
No Warrior in their right mind would let an unidentified person go beyond their border. She didn’t know that, but they were being too aggressive about it.
I rolled my eyes on reflex. They had called for backup, and thought I would be intimidated by seeing 3 more wolves. I earned a growl from them feeling disrespected.
“I am Beta Connor the Charred One of Charred Moon in Jentucky, and I’m currently on vacation, so I’d rather not show my status if I can help it.” I say with a nonthreatening smile. I was currently trying to steer clear of inflating my wolf’s ego any more than it already was. He was pissed but under control at the moment because all they had done so far is bluff. I think they could sense Titus, and chose to not be foolish.
“I found it Connor, all of it was under my seat.” Shouted Nancy, saving me a headache. She passed them our identification, but I think the one she gave them was the more official one. They looked like they had seen ghosts.
They bowed and apologized, and handed her back our papers. “Prince Connor, forgive our arrogance.” He stuttered. I could hear them. This was their first time realizing that the King was Real.
I couldn’t even remember the last time I was called Prince. “Beta is fine.” I say, getting back into the passenger side. Nancy made a U-turn, and as she was driving off, I had to mess with her a little bit. It would take the tension out the air.
“Nancy-chan where are you taking me?” I said as I bat my eyelashes, pretending to be a frightened anime girl. She laughed and slapped my face playfully. I burst into laughter before I could continue with my nonsense. She didn’t watch anime, but she had tolerated my bullshit for almost 200 years now. I couldn’t help myself; I saw the opportunity and I took it. There’s just something special about teasing your mate.
“My Lady… I was going to let us rest here since you seemed so tired, but not now, the asses.” She shot me a glare but couldn’t hold back her smile after about 5 seconds, because I was rubbing the back of her neck with my hand.
“Don’t worry about it. They didn’t know, and you didn’t know to call. Relax Nanners.” I said reassuringly.
The point of this trip was to calm down Titus, as well as chill out with my mate. Right now, I know I Still reeked of Alpha and testosterone… and OrangeMoon’s patrol didn’t help.
I know they would mean well, but they would show us too much submission now that they knew I was of royal blood if we stayed. They would treat me like their Alpha, not just a visiting Beta because they saw that folder first.
We arrived in the human town about a half hour after that. I hadn’t been there before, but I had seen enough commercials about Tennessaw to want to come. Nancy looked on her phone and found of all things a vampire run hotel, while I finished the last of the Hamburger Royalty. I looked out the window like a kid in a candy store. We passed one actually, but she wouldn’t stop. She wanted to check in before sundown, and I could understand that.
The place was an old ‘haunted’ southern brick home. It was 3 stories with vines growing on the wall. I thought it was cool. Gothic. It reminded me of every haunted home movie ever, but that was because it was probably run by some stuffy old vampire lord, who slept in the bottom of the basement in a suite.
I opened the thick wooden door for my mate, who went in first with our papers and checked us in. The inside was beautiful, spacious, and grand. It was a proper bed and breakfast, but all I could smell was vampire and blood. It wasn’t strong, but that kind of scent can never really go away. It seemed as if this was maybe their coven den, or at least close to it. There was a fancy gated community down the road. Also, it seemed every employee and guest were vampires. It made me hold onto Nancy and shield her out of instinct.
“Right this way Beta Connor.” Said the receptionist. He seemed to be respectful enough, and I didn’t mind the nice view of the courtyard below. The inside of the room was lavish with nice green satin sheets, and earthy tones filled the room. It looked like it was taken out a home magazine. Everything was perfect, and there was a small lounge area with a large window so you could see everything outside as well.
They went all out on the backyard of the B&B. There were statues that looked to be of real marble. Men in poses complemented the perfectly trimmed hedges. There was a nice grand seating area out there with nice stone pathways, a fountain, and flowers growing so well out of season from all the bodies they must bury.
The scent of vampire got stronger, and it made me nervous for my mate. I didn’t have anything against any supernatural creature; however, we were natural enemies. There was always the chance that we could be attacked by one of them solely because of that.
“Be calm, Young Prince. I apologize I did not bid you welcome sooner; I was busy.” Said a deep, smooth voice from the walls itself. Suddenly, a shadow from the wall became a man. He was a tall guy, about the same height as me, with black hair in a pin straight ponytail that ended at his shoulders. He wore a black t shirt, with black pants and boots… and had no scent…nor breath or heartbeat.
“I am Lord Victor Drogos, and you both are under my protection.” He reached his hand out. I stared skeptically, shielding Nancy behind me. He sighed. “If anything happens to the blood of the Wolf King, there would be war. I do not want that, so please be comfortable here.” I hesitantly shook, but I didn’t like the vibes this guy gave off. It’s just something about a man with no scent, no heartbeat, or breathing that just made me uneasy.
He handed me a business card with a phone number on it, and disappeared into nothingness. I decided it was best to put it in my wallet.
