Chapter 79

Kaiden
She woke up to my scent and immediately was afraid. I tend to do that, not that I can help it. I shifted to show I meant no harm, and was tossed a pair of shorts by a warrior that followed me, and I was half surprised. They weren’t asked, they willingly came in case I needed help without asking.
“Here’s some meat, eat.” I tell her, passing it to her mate, and he started ripping pieces for her. She took it, but still shook. She had no words, only fear. She was genuinely timid, and I wondered how they lasted out here. Even fit, in no man’s land, only those who are strong make it. I saw some small logs and while they were distracted, I used my grip to force embers to form on the wood before tossing it into the almost dead campfire. It blazed back to life, and I let them warm up a bit before we continued.
I can’t fix the world, but I could at least try not to be a shit Alpha. I sighed, looking at the stars. She slowly, silently ate, and I examined her as nonthreateningly as possible. She smelled like weakness, and the smallest tinge of grapefruit peel… meaning she was probably pregnant too. Though I could be wrong, I was with literally every female at the packhouse.
They decided on leaving all the old tents and blankets, except the thickest, and he wrapped it around her small frame, carrying her. We ran in human form until a warrior met us halfway with a 4-wheeler.
In my office, they sat next to each other, holding hands. I could tell it was more for the former Delta’s mate. I began to examine her more. She was covered in small thin lines. Too small for a male, more like she wolf. I have a feeling that this pack had the notion of mistreating the weak. I growled, making them both jump.
“Sorry… I noticed all your mate’s scars.” I say, while getting the confirmation that indeed he quit, and the pack registered him as a fugitive.
Great.
I called Alpha Frank, it rang a while, until a confrontational man answered the phone. “Alpha Frank, state your business.” He said angrily and sleepily.
“I’m Alpha Kaiden of the CharredMoon, and I need you to fax me your former Delta and his mate’s paperwork.” I say calm, yet firm.
“I will not release that cur. The Rogue is mine to kill.” He bitterly growled.
“I will not repeat myself.” I growl with the same level of bitterness.
“He is mine to kill for defying me.” He growled a little louder. He initiated a challenge.
“Elliot. Is. Mine.” I growl menacingly. There was a pause, in submission.
“He’s useless. His mate is worthless. They are registered as fugitives, and by law they must be returned to me!” He slammed the phone. I was livid. He lived just a bit too far away, and I couldn’t leave the pack at risk with the Church in Bison. There was no guarantee they didn’t stop searching for Heidi. I furiously typed an email to the Council, as well as that asshat.
I felt a small hand on my clenched fist, sending small sparks up my arm. My mate, Beta, and Delta Roberts were up. I hadn’t noticed that I was that loud, but he provoked me. I didn’t notice that Connor had to block the door to keep them from leaving my office. I didn’t notice my claws and fangs were out. I had not been so disrespected since my last fight with Bryson the Beast…
----Eclipse----
I didn’t know what that other Alpha said, but Kaiden was enraged. He looked like he was about to shift at any moment, but with my hand on his fist, he seemed to catch himself. The two new pack members seemed absolutely terrified of all of us, even me. “… I knew it was too good to be true…” said the woman, staring at Connor like he would rip her head off.
“No one here is out to hurt you.” He told her with a small smile. “Alpha, what happened this early in the morning?” yawned Connor,
“I want to add these two to the pack, but they’re registered as criminal Rogues…. Because Elliot here refused to choose his job over his mate.” He growled, pulling me into a gentle embrace, smelling my hair. I snuggled up to him, I understood his frustration. How could someone be so cruel…
“But she’s with pup.” Said Delta Roberts flatly. I sniffed the air, you almost couldn’t catch it, because her scent was so light, but it was there. The smell of grapefruit. Elliot’s eyes sparkled, and he held his mate’s hand, but she looked submissive. “They can stay in one of the residential homes until we sort this out.” Said Kaiden.
Before they could protest, Connor walked to a small cabinet full of keys and grabbed one off the second row, and put them in the man’s hand. Kaiden took one hand off me, reaching for his wallet, and gave them some money.
He was speechless. He stared at the keys, debating on staying. There was risk. He was a Rogue. Since he wasn’t in the pack, there was always the chance that he would have to leave. He would be protected in the pack territory, but not from the council.
“Frank was always a spoiled brat, even when we were kids…. Thank you.” He bowed and walked out with his mate. Connor was right behind so he could show them where it was. Delta left, leaving only me and Alpha.
He sat in his chair, pulling me into his lap, and kissed me gently. “Babygirl if you wouldn’t have showed up, my wolf would have made me shift.” He mumbled in my ear, kissing my neck. It sent shivers down my spine. I wrapped my arms around his neck, and kissed him gently on the cheek. We snuggled in an embrace that I wished could last forever, but I knew it wouldn’t. It had been a while since we had a chance to truly be alone. We stayed like this until I heard the pups waking up. With one final kiss, we got up and got the little ones ready.
I decided to check on Heidi, just in case she was up, and also because I could only assume all that growling might have freaked her out. She was still coming to terms with her life, and though she was better, she was still timid sometimes. There were still days when she would call me in the middle of the night because she couldn’t sleep. I had the pups follow me quietly, I didn’t want her more afraid than I knew she would be. I know she heard Kaiden. He pretty much woke up everyone with his shouting.
She was in the shower, and her clothes were on the bed. “We’re going shopping when you get out.” I tell her, hoping that letting her have girl time would help her out.
“Okay mom.” She yelled out the bathroom. She was hiding her fear, not well, but she was trying to calm herself. I decided I should drop it, she was fighting her demons, and I didn’t want to make it harder for her.
I closed the door, and I went downstairs with the pups to watch Kaiden fail at breakfast, but I would save everyone from the smell of scorched toast and burned bacon. He was always distracted, trying to seemingly force breakfast to cook itself while on the phone or going all the way up to the office to do something.
He stood behind me, hands on my hips, and let me cook. The pups were wrestling with each other just in the living room. Even though Isabelle was a girl, she held her own with Caleb. They were both playing tug of war with a teddy. They were growling, but it wasn’t serious.
“Cheater.” Hissed Connor playfully, summoned by the smell of coffee, bacon and flapjacks. My turn is technically tomorrow.
“…. Do you really want me to cook though?” He retorted, gripping my hips, pulling me into him a little more. The phone rang upstairs, and he slowly let me go with an agitated grunt to answer it.
“And everything would be burnt and raw in the middle.” I giggle, serving pups and then myself, allowing everyone else to serve themselves. We had to get a deep freezer for extra food if they wanted something else. The pups had their own small table, and they all sat like they were having their own little meeting. Heidi ran down the stairs, and promptly sat next to me. I got up and filled her plate to the brim.
“My Lady mom!” She squeaked, digging in. The smell of hot food wafted around, and I could hear shuffling around upstairs. The packhouse became busy, and Shelly came down with her mate and pup.
