Book 2 Chapter 29

Heidi
I sipped the tea he gave me quietly, and he silently typed on his phone, looking for flights until he mumbled something in an ancient language. I don’t think anyone would know except his mate. “Son, is that offer still avalible from GreenMoon?” He yelled, and his son shouted back to him from I assume his office.
“Alpha Green offered to let you use his jet, but he needs it back in 3 days.” Said his son.
“Send the bill to Ronitus After we get to the castle.” He shouted.
“Ok.” He shouted back, and Alpha Wisp stood up. We followed him closely, and we stopped when he got to his room. He came out as quickly as he left, followed by his nearly white haired mate.
“Honey I’m going to be gone a few days, Ron’s youngest pup is in danger again.” He said with a frown.
“Why won’t Brutus leave the poor pup alone?” She complained, but came forward to quickly shake our hands before he motioned for us to go downstairs. He had linked her a response, but I wouldn’t know what it was.
“Get in my car.” He insisted, letting John be in the front seat with him, and he buckled up. He drove off, making sure that he linked someone something. He was giving orders, and the streets were empty of cars completely.
“What’s going on?” Asked my mate, who was starting to get concerned.
“Did you follow the scent of wolves, only to never find the pack?” He asked, looking at John for a second while he drove.
“Huh? Yeah why?” He asked.
“You all got teleported by someone who didn’t want you to be where you were… but they sent you to me. Interesting.” He said as if he were thinking out loud.
“Um. We got gas and I met a really weird guy. Chornis? Something like that.” I admitted but he shook his head.
“Chonis has no power, the gods stripped him-who’s your patron? It’s Heidi, right? It isn’t the Lady, I would smell it.” He said suspiciously, and I couldn’t play dumb with someone who could read your mind, so I pulled the only card I knew I had.
“That’s private.” I said defensively and he scoffed.
“Well miss sassy pants, your god or goddess took you to safety, meaning you two were about to die.” He said seriously. “I hope you told them thank you. You two must be important to their plans to directly intervene.” He said with a small smile.
“I did.” I said quietly. I’d never been called sassy before, but it made my wolf puff with pride. She liked that I’d defended myself instead of telling him.
“How can we trust you?” Blurted Ann, and she had made a point.
“Pup, you’re so fresh turned, I still smell your mortal flesh changing… Odds and Evens.” He said tapping his rearview mirror. “Brutus runs the Odds, Ronitus the Even. Beware all the odd numbers, even those who don’t align with that rat, because they sit next to someone who does.”
“Why?” I asked.
“Brutus divided the court when he almost killed Phillips mate, some agreed; a human shouldn’t be in court, while the rest of us didn’t care, as that is his true mate. She is meant to be there… if not, the Goddess wouldn’t have put a mortal in his bed.” He said casually. “We still fight over this, even sending out Shadows on rival seat targets to ruin their connections. From time to time, in an effort to remove the False Third, we also motion to kick him out, but the King will not interfere, because he knows Phillip’s mate would likely be assassinated by the Odd Seats. Then to add to the confusion, some upstart got blessed by the Lady and is the New Fifth seat, moving all the original Odds to Even chairs after five, so be wary of Six. The rest aren’t strong enough to really think about but that is what makes them so devious. They tend to follow whoever’s side they sit on.” He said shaking his head.
“I take it everything was less complicated with Phillip around.” Said John.
“Very. So much so that I’m almost surprised he isn’t the one driving this car.” He said with his eyes almost a whiteish gray.
-----John-----
He had said pretty much word for word what my father had told me of the council, so I did trust him, but only about as far as I could throw him. My priority was my mate, and if he showed he was the slightest off, I would try to get Heidi and Ann out of here.
His eyes were silver as he drove at least 130 miles an hour down the road. He did this to sharpen his reflexes, because at that speed, anything could change. As far as I could tell there wasn’t a need, since no one knew where we were. I wasn’t even carrying that emergency flip phone anymore; I was half tempted to tell him to chill.
I didn’t though, he was just an old man, doing a favor for an old friend. I know it would hurt my father to go through all the trouble of hiding me, only for me to die at his friend’s doorstep.
“You’re brighter than Herrakken.” He said with a small smile, ruffling my hair. “Also, despite all your efforts, and even a god’s, we’re being followed.” He said pointing out the window.
“How?!” I looked, seeing a black SUV tailing us from a few yards away. Damnit.
“My guess, that car had a tracker, and it’s either an ally or an enemy. I will not wait around to guess. I’m slitting his throat the moment I get the chance, and if not, use this.” He reached for something, pulling out a gun. “I assume you know how to load this, boy.” He said casually handing it to me, and I questioned how he had this. These were illegal. Highly restricted, as the council wants wolves to fight as the Goddess made us for rank... not like mortals.
“Son if he’s got a gun don’t hesitate. Plant one in his chest, no heroics.” He grumbled, and I nodded. He wasn’t wrong, but it still felt strange. I felt like I was breaking the honor code for warriors by just holding it.
I internally sighed… seeing him get off the interstate, and onto the main roads. The airport was only five minutes away from the exit. This was it… we pulled into the private parking spaces, and I got a chance to put it down in the seat again.
We are friend not foe, stand down Alpha. This is Warrior Lanard Linked I assumed was the wolf in the black car.
We will not. Warrior, your services are not needed here, but thank you. Common linked the Breathless One. He was so dedicated to keeping us safe that he would not even allow his pack to help. Or at least, he didn’t trust them.
That made me nervous to say the least, especially since we were in the airport parking lot. This is neutral territory, as well as a sensitive area for mortals. One false step here and hundreds of people could see… far too many, headed to too many destinations to round up and fix my screw up this time. I was thankful last time that it was consolidated to only one or two hunters on the same flight as me….
“No eye flashes, no linking. Look, act, and think human.” Warned Alpha Wisp, looking directly at Ann.
“I know, I know! I’m trying but this is going to be really hard. I can already smell this place…. Do humans really stink like this? I can tell some of them haven’t bathed….” She held her nose and I chuckled, putting a firm pat on her shoulder.
“Yes, they do, no offence… if you can’t we can go inside and buy some shades or something. But try first, ok? I don’t want any hunters bothering us this time.” I warned.
She nodded her head, walking behind Alpha Wisp, and in front of me and Heidi making a small train. Oddly enough, I felt a bond with Ann, almost like a parent would when they worry for their pup. At least that was the best way I could describe it. My wolf stirred, but didn’t say anything, so I must have been right. Her wolf was made from mine and my mate’s, so it would only make sense that we would feel like that about her. I hoped silently that it wasn’t too much, but realistically I knew it was.
“My wolf is freaking out.” She whisper yelled, and we nodded, trying not to attract suspicion. We looked like a family with their grandpa going on vacation, since he had the only bags, and had silver hair. We had to keep the façade.
“We’ll go to the gift shop.” I whispered back, but she didn’t respond.
There was a fear in her eyes, and I grabbed her hand to keep her moving. We went into the busy, crowded store, getting shades and a few other things. I had her put them on immediately, because her eyes were already a grayish tinge from her fighting it. Thankfully, Alpha Wisp and me both had money. I bought a wallet too, so I didn’t have about $800 in loose bills in my pockets. Her eyes turned silver, but in the shades, they looked like they were just gray, not a shining reflective silver that would draw suspicion.
We finally made a calm and collected looking dash for the clearance area of the private airstrip outside. We didn’t have Id’s on us, and I realized we were going to have an issue with that…. “Psst, Mr. Wisp, we don’t have our identification.” I whispered to him, and he rolled his eyes.
