Chapter 36
Eclipse
The window blinds were open, and it was sunny outside. There was no plan for today, other than being with Alpha. He had taken off all his duties with the Council so he could be with me, and it made me feel special. Alpha Kaiden was so warm, his scent was all I wanted, it made me feel safe again. I don’t know what he did to change it, maybe he calmed down, but when he’s like this, I could be with him forever. Just him being there was enough. Even sitting next to me while I brushed my hair gave me a comfort that soothed my worries, and my mild pain. He was the man I had grown to love, and I had leaned onto him a bit. He didn’t seem to mind, also enjoying the tingles of the bond.
I pulled my hair into a ponytail, and today it was crinkly and frizzy since the pups braided my hair yesterday. I slipped on one of his t shirts, it fit pretty much like a dress, and some baggy shorts. He sat on the bed with his laptop, tapping away. He looked bored out of his mind, but we were going downstairs soon because the Beta from the other pack was here.
When I was finished, I was carried downstairs and set at the dining table, leaving my crutches upstairs. He refuses to let me use them; he still thinks that it’s all his fault I got hurt. I sighed internally and drank some orange juice while he talked with Beta Connor and Derrick. They all looked tired, but they seemed content enough with each other’s company.
They were all childhood friends, and Alpha’s wolf almost killed him because he thought he would plan to hurt me. I still didn’t know about trusting anyone other than the original warriors and pack members, because they were people I knew, and I knew they were loyal.
As I thought of Kaiden, my mind drifted to the dream I had and that it was right. He had destroyed him. He did more than just defeat him… he disemboweled him, ripped out his heart and ate it. That is not normal, but I would not ask him about that, because I didn’t want to bring it up. Also, Alpha seems to always be so aggressive when he defeats someone, like he’s unable to calm down, which is also abnormal…. Maybe I should ask him about that. I heard a loud throat clear, breaking me from my thoughts.
A warrior then put a plate of raw beef on the table and slid it to me. I looked confused, because why would I eat that? Shimmer was practically prancing. “This will build your strength my Luna, the body needs protein to rebuild bone and muscle.”, I smiled and politely turned it down, and she looked confused but didn’t question it. She bowled leaving.
I heard Alpha walking to the table. He kissed me on the forehead and he slid the plate back. “Babygirl, it’s for Shimmer so she can heal you. It takes a lot of energy, especially since you’re so new to the shift.” He said concerned. I looked again at the raw slab of beef that covered the entire plate. “You’re supposed to let Shimmer take over if that helps.” He said with a smile, and cut a piece, taking a bite.
“…. But You ate that, not your wolf.” I said looking at it suspiciously.
“Raw meat makes up most of my meals… I only ever eat human food with you.” He said putting the fork and knife in my hands.
“But it’s so good.” I said thinking of how nice this would have been pan fried in butter, salt and herbs…
“It comes from living as I do. Digesting human food is a little harder for me, so I eat more like a wolf.” He said honestly.
“A wolf?” I asked curiously, stalling.
“It doesn’t matter how I say it: The flavor of flesh is more appealing.” He said with a small smile, but it didn’t matter how he said that, I didn’t like it. He was right on that part….
“…. I can eat it later.” I said thinking that he would go back to his Betas, but he folded his arms.
“You aren’t getting out of this.” He said with a smirk.
“Lady damnit…” I mumbled. His eyes practically twinkled like a parent watching their child walk for the first time.
I cut a small piece. I hesitated, then I took a bite. It tasted like rare unseasoned steak, but Shimmer ate it all, saying it was the best thing she ever tasted. And I instantly felt stronger. I felt like my leg was healing. My smaller bruised spots tingled and slowly the pain disappeared.
“See? Was that so bad?” He said patting me on the back.
“No…. but I didn’t taste anything.” I said thinking of his words.
“Shifters who eat a lot of raw, taste the difference in different meat flavors regardless of if it’s cooked…. This isn’t too uncommon, but you usually see this in elders with strong wolves. It’s Mostly those of Alpha strength. But if you told this to an Omega like your parents, they likely wouldn’t believe it…. but I also don’t think that you would be able to handle raw diet either, since you were raised on mortal food.” He said thinking out loud.
“He’s not bullshitting.” Said Beta Connor. “Like we can tell the difference. I’ll give an example. Um, I’ll use elk, beef, and white tail deer. On a plate they look similar, especially if you cut it into small chunks. I’d know just like you know the difference between roasted chicken versus duck… it comes from centuries of eating raw.”
“What if I ate raw like that?” Asked Beta Derick. “I can’t tell. It all just tastes like meat to me.”
“You’d throw up.” Said Kaiden and Connor at the same time.
“I’m as old as you Alpha.” He said slightly grumpily.
“But you don’t have Rakaam.” Said Kaiden.
“Or Titus.” Said Connor.
“…. Give me a plate of whatever you got in the fridge.” He said sitting at the table.
“Alright.” Said Alpha, getting out a large slab of elk, and the other was labeled venison. He also got out paper plates and borrowed a marker with a link.
“Oh I see what you’re doing.” Said Beta Derick, looking closely and I did too. He would be the only one to know what he wrote on the plates, and what meat was what.
“I was saving these, but both are the tenderloin. Both are red, but only one is elk.” He said cutting them both into cubes. He put 2 cubes on each plate, and he put two plates down for himself after we got ours. “No peeking either.” He said sliding the marker to Derrick.
“Damn it.” He joked.
“Which one is elk, and which is deer?” Asked Alpha.
“You had to cube them up?” He complained. He ate one of each. “This one.” He said confidently sliding the plate on the left, but Kaiden made a ‘wrong answer’ buzzer noise.
Derrick slid the marker to me, and I tried both cubes from each plate… I couldn’t tell. I guessed. “This one.” I said sliding my left plate forward, and I was wrong.
Alpha and Beta Connor were right.
“I still don’t believe it!” He complained. “I always wondered why you three made a fuss over raw when we were pups. Where’s Gamma?!” He playfully demanded.
“I’ll link her.” Said Beta Connor.
He also got up, with a nod from Alpha to get beef too. He cut a small cube, putting it on the plate as she came in. He took Connor’s plate, but put the beef in the middle. She came down, holding papers in her hand.
“Now which one is beef?” Kaiden asked.
She aptly ate one of all three. “First one’s elk, second’s beef, third’s deer. Nice try. Your mother Lilly would have gotten this right too.” She said, going back upstairs.
“I still think this is bogus… but I’ll ask mom when I get back to the pack…. If she’s up for it.” He said quietly.
“She’s still… you know.” Said Kaiden.
“Oh yeah it’s bad… She didn’t eat today.” He said getting up. “Now that I think of it, I should go check on her.” He said shaking wrists with Alpha.
“Hold on.” Said Alpha, giving all the meat to him. “That should hopefully trigger her wolf.” He said giving him a firm pat on the back.
After he left their mood was a little blue, but I wanted to know what they were talking about.
“His mom lost her mate.” Said Beta, “I figured you’d be curious.” He said quickly after.
To lose one’s mate was to lose a part of yourself. It was rare that wolves heal from such a fate... but as the former Luna… it was something that she had to deal with. I doubted there was anything I could do, especially since it was My mate that did it. It was something that all wolves worry for when they get their one, but I couldn’t imagine.
“Don’t worry Eclipse.” Encouraged Alpha. “She’ll be right as rain in a few weeks.” He said as encouragement, but I knew better.
“…. How about I find a movie?” Asked Beta Connor, and Alpha nodded.
“I’ve been meaning to take a longer break than our small meeting.” He said with a nod.
