Book 2 Chapter 20
Heidi
We were lost, but there were guards everywhere. “It’s nothing really…. I just hate seeing others mistreated.” I told her honestly, flagging down a guard. He looked bored but alert. He was massive, at least as tall as dad…. He had his jet black hair spiked into a mohawk, and ear gauges in his ear. All he needed was a baseball bat, and he would look like he belonged in a zombie fighting movie with his officer uniform on. He looked at me, and I nearly gasped. He had one dark brown eye and one ice blue eye.
“And who might you two be?” He asked cheerfully. “I’m Warrior Garnet, welcome to Lapis.”
“Uh which way to the packhouse?” I asked. The huge man patted me on the back roughly, nearly knocking me over. He chuckled.
“Sorry, you’re so small, you two remind me of pups.… yet you smell like you are adults… I’ve never seen wolves so small in my life…Alpha is going to get a kick out of this. Where are you from?!” He asked, leading the way. I guess he intended to show us.
“I’m originally from Emerald Coven…. Though I was adopted by dad in CharredMoon.” I told him, and he stopped in his tracks.
“Your highness?! Forgive me! I didn’t expect to be escorting a princess today. I’ve been outside since sunrise, forgive this old man’s stank.” He chuckled, but I could tell he was worried. He treated me like a regular pack member, but I didn’t mind that.
“No no! Don’t change because of me, I shouldn’t have said anything.” I said looking down and he made that look dad makes before he ruffles my hair.
“I assume then that the Prince must be easy going, however many of the council are not. If I walked in there paling around with you, Alpha would have ripped me a new one, or maybe his son. I heard his youngest boy is already as strong as Delta.” He said thinking out loud. He was right, though I disagreed. John would understand.
“Dad’s great. He actually hates being called his royal title.” I told him and he looked releived.
“Well, your grace, I will still call you yours, because you never gave me a name.” He chuckled, and so did Ann. I nearly facepalmed.
“This is Ann, and I’m Heidi Ch-Stone.” I corrected myself. My name had gotten changed since I was mated to John, but my title remained.
“Ah, well, I’m Garnet, no last name, but my clan’s name is Bearclaw.” He said cheerfully.
“Oh, I heard of you guys, you’re wolves with razer claws!” Said Ann.
“Give the girl a prize!” He ruffled her hair and then he scrunched his nose. “You smell so human it’s unreal.” He chuckled.
“Well, what if I was human?” She asked.
“Well, I hadn’t had man meat in a long time, but at this point I’m invested in your well being so I’d ether plead your case and make you a pet or mark you.” He said honestly. I glared at him. She did too. “Sorry to offend girls, I was raised in a pretty cut and dry environment. You didn’t really wait for soulmates. You like her, you mark and mate her.” He said with a chuckle. “Also, you smell really nice for a pipsqueak. You better be careful with the unmated males like me.” He wiggled his eyebrows.
“How are you unmated? You smell older than dad.” I asked quietly.
“Oh, well in my early life I didn’t care. I was an assassin, killed on the Harvest Moon a few times, but this Harvest Moon is the last one I have to wait. It’s been 999 years since I killed the first time at 18.” He said with a smile, but I could tell he was hurt.
“Wow… I couldn’t imagine waiting that long.” I told him and he chuckled.
“Eh, it’s what I get for not learning my lesson five times in a row. Plus being an assassin so long makes me practically able to turn invisible.” He struck a pose, and I smiled a little. He reminded me of my uncle in a way. Always happy and cheerful, though I could bet money that his wolf was ravenously aggressive, as it’s a technique to keep them calm. He seemed happy enough though, leading the way with a small hum.
I began to see the shops. The residential shops were usually near the packhouse. It was so the Alpha could defend those while the warriors helped the citizens in case of an attack. Every pack had maybe a third of the wolves as warriors. Sometimes half. They were paid to protect and serve, while the other wolves worked in shops or in town. Some, like the Omegas even worked for the Alpha’s delivery service, though being an Omega was rare, and random.
But one thing I was happy about, here, like in dad’s pack, no one picked on the weak too hard. It was because the elder wolves were so strong that they didn’t obsess over it. They were born able to crush others. Like John. I thought of my mate how he could break an arm with just his grip….
“Heidi, do you want some coffee?” Asked Ann. “Also, you zoned out, I asked you that like twice now, are you ok?” She questioned.
“I’d lie but I know you’d press me to spill it.” I said with a small smile. Lapis Café was big, and looked like an old 1950’s American diner. I loved the smells that came from it, and I could tell that they made way more than coffee there. They made food too. It was almost like a small restaurant.
“Well Spill it! You can’t leave me hanging.” Complained Warrior Garnet.
“I was thinking about how older wolves don’t mistreat the weak, and how it’s probably because they’re so strong.” I said honestly. We walked inside and sat down, while Garnet ordered and paid for us.
There was a hyper girl running around, yiping happily that she served the Prince today, and she must have meant John. “Well, that tiny thing there with the pepper red hair is his mate.” He said happily. “Oh, and your grace you’re only half right. Older ancients also are cared for by Omegas, so they feel the need to protect weak wolves in general. I asked His Majesty myself while being an escort guard once. He rotates that so no one Warrior feels too important… because honestly, we aren’t needed.” He smiled, serving us hot pancakes with sausage. He also gave us black coffee with cream and sugar on the side so we could serve ourselves.
“Oh, my Lady you’re so pretty! I met your mate today, My name is Rita Fritz.” She practically bounced off the walls, and her eyes turned blue-gray.
“This is my little cousin…. Rita, please calm down.” Said Warrior Garnet, a bit embarraced.
“It’s ok, and it’s nice to meet you.” I shook her hand. “The food is great.” I told her and she puffed with pride.
“Papa let me cook!” She cheesed a grin until she sniffed the air. “Are you human?” She asked Ann. “I never met a human before, but mom told me that all hunters smell like wild onion.” She said with narrowed eyes. It couldn’t be denied. She did have a natural wild onion smell. It wasn’t offensive, it just meant she was a mortal born with second sight, the ability to see past supernatural barriers.
“No, I just have a dormant wolf.” She protested, and her mother came out.
“Garnet, how didn’t you know?! I’ve been retired 3 decades, and I can still tell! Are you an Idiot?!” Screamed her mother, grabbing her child and Garnet stood up. His eyes turned a deep purplish red.
“His Majesty allows this one to live with his grace and mate Penelope. I will not question Alpha.” Said his wolf.
“Silence, fuck off and move. That one is a hunter. Alpha will understand.” She hissed.
“No, I wasn’t! I was born into that life, but I was forced…. And too incompetent. Useless…Just kill me. I don’t like pretending.” She said, but I stood up.
“That sounds awfully familiar, does it not Cousin?” Asked Silence, Garnet’s wolf. That was probably one of the coolest wolf name’s I’d heard.
“What the clan did to you was a service. You’re the only wolf in our generation born on the new moon.” She hissed. “Fucking prodigy, move.”
He sighed. “If you hurt this human. I will kill you. You know this.” He then turned to her, sniffing the air deeply. “If you are not my mate, you will do. I cannot tell, but soon I will be.” He was very… intimidating to say the least.
“You wouldn’t. I fucking raised you.” She hissed. The dead look he gave her reminded me of dad’s wolf. He was definitely as aggressive as I thought….
“Penelope…. I have 17,425 confirmed kills and 556 Rouges protecting the pack over nearly 1,000 years, not to mention what I do not count for fun. Do not think you are special. You are not my mother.” He said sternly.
“I think we should leave.” I said, putting my hand cautiously on his shoulder. He looked at me with his strange eyes, letting them go back to normal.
“Of course, your highness.” He said with a curt bow, and waited for us to leave out first. She glared unable to do anything about it, since I was future Luna.
“That hunter should be meat!” She yelled.
“Take it up with Alpha.” He hissed.
