Book 2: Chapter 62

Heidi
I managed to convince John to at the very least, get some rest, but now it was early in the morning. I was the first one up this time, even though it was pretty much expected that we would both be off from our duties. He couldn’t keep anything down, and my magic seemed to trade my healthiness for his wounds…. So healing him was out the question. I don’t think I would be able to handle it. I tried though. Rahrraam was helpful as he could be, getting any stray notes I’d left in my room to bring them to me. It was only his job to aid me, not to tell me anything I didn’t already know.
The sun was barely up, and I had every book I owned in the kitchen, trying to figure out why my spells were turning on me, but all of this was for other schools of magic with different patrons. I wasn’t compatible with any conventional spells. I hadn’t even tried my broom. I had a feeling it might not work anymore. On top of all of it, I heard loud arguing outside, but couldn’t make out what they were saying…. It was very distracting.
There was loud talking outside between I think Xavier and someone, but whoever it was insisted on coming in, and he wasn’t letting them without a good reason. I was thankful for that, and I figured it had to be someone John wouldn’t want in the house.
There was a knock on the door. “It’s unlocked.” I mumbled. I had done that for Xavier since he didn’t have a key, and Garnet had forgotten to give him the spare. They hadn’t come back yet, and if they did, they didn’t come over, but they deserved some together time.
“Knock Knock.” Said Aikesh, making me look up from my tome. His father stood in front of him, but honestly, they both could leave. My instincts were on high alert, but for my mate’s sake, I would do what I could to keep them from getting close to him. I mustered up my courage, letting Sparkle be aggressive… it also helped that I was bound to a demon, who I knew would come if I called him.
“Get out.” I growled at him with help from my wolf. I didn’t trust him after yesterday… and John was out cold.
“You annoy me half breed… but I’ve come to let the High Heir know that his brother has been spotted in Galleztown, about 50 miles south of Diamond Coven. It’s a town of trolls and goblins, run by the mafia. We don’t know if he’s meaning to deal with them or not.” He grumbled.
This didn’t add up.
“…. but how would You know that?” I narrowed my eyes…
“Because unlike You I have eyes and ears through connections I’ve laid for four millennia. Your attitude needs adjustment… you were better off knowing your place.” He growled, but there was a bigger one from the bathroom.
“I can’t even take a shit.” Growled Rahrraam, coming into the living room agitated and naked. He summoned his whip, having it materialize in his clawed fingers.
“I don’t have time for this.” Growled Aikesh, taking steps to the door, but Alpha Wisp spoke up.
“You summon her familiar with your hostility. We mean no harm.” Said Wisp, but Rahrraam walked to them until he was right in his face.
“Does it look like I care? Leave as my mistress commands filth. Through our bond I share my courage. She needs no fear of You, or any male.” He snarled, making the lights flicker.
“Very well. Know if they need us, we will come.” Said Wisp, but Aikesh scoffed…. I just didn’t trust it. Something was off. I don’t know what but it made no sense how he would know that much details on Herrakken if he was essentially on the run, connections or not.
They left, and Rahrraam got himself a cookie, and became his small black rat. His fur looked a little shaggier around his whiskers and chin though, but I guess that was because he was actually a goat man? He looked upset, nibbling on the cookie next to me as if it had done something wrong to him.
“…You wanted to use your whip, didn’t you?” I asked, and he stopped for a second to look at me as if it were obvious.
“Sorry Heidi.” Xavier knocked on the threshold of the door. “They said they had information they’d only tell you. I would have tried strong arming them a little harder if I knew they were going to be rude.”
“No it’s fine… I think I learned something about those two just now because of it.” I mumbled.
“And what would that be?” He asked.
“I think…. I know I shouldn’t say it, but I think that maybe Aikesh is still in contact with John’s brother.” I said looking at the table. That kind of accusation heard by the wrong ears could get Aikesh beheaded or banished…
“I wouldn’t be surprised; all the high seats and the late Crown Prince were all the same age, littermates even. Times then were different. You could wake up with your pack completely ablaze, pillaged, and mass graves filled with burning, rotted corpses by noonish. It’s why they can’t fight him. That and the seat number follows their strength. So Aikesh is probably weaker than him anyway, but they also still see him as a brother.” He walked in and picked up the books that I’d laid on the floor, putting them into neat stacks by color. That wasn’t how it worked, but I was thankful anyway.
“I guess for now, we’ll tell John when he gets up; I assume that Alpha Ron already knows.” I said quietly.
“I linked him as soon as that bastard told you. He’s furious, as their house looks worse.” He mumbled.
“Then… it’s a political mess too.” I looked at my hands. No one was going to help my mate, and politically everyone had ammunition on the House of Stone with Herrakken on the loose. More pressure would be placed on John to end this… but some of the elders knew. Would he walk into a trap they knew about? I could only guess. It didn’t help that through our bond I felt his pain, and also that he was waking up. I found the spot in my tome a little faster.
It said that those blessed by Horned One’s creations are cursed by Lia and pretty much all the other gods who surrendered to the Lord of Light. She doesn’t want her name sullied, nor affiliated with Zuviel. It makes sense… he is the Adversary to the Lord of Light…. light she needs for her greenery and earth in general.
How healing usually works is energy is taken from the earth, air and whatever else is around to heal another… but with the Lord of Night it changes. With him, Energy for healing is exchanged. Health for health. It trades my healthy limb’s energy with his injured one…. There had to be a work around…
I had an idea that twinged my conscious, but I would try anything for him to feel better faster.
“I really don’t want to do this… but Xavier can you bring me a small living thing?” I asked quietly. He looked confused, but otherwise left. Rahrraam became a rat, as that form used less energy. He also didn’t mind being so small, because he could fit in my pocket.
John limped in the room, looking completely tired, heavily bruised all over. The scuffle with Aikesh did a number on him, but it looked more superficial than last night… Last night it was raw and open, but now it was at least closed and bruised.
“What time is it?” He rubbed his eyes.
“It’s 5:51; go back to bed.” I told him softly.” He hissed as he sat next to me instead.
“I kind of heard you stand up for me… thank you little mate.” He said softly, growling lightly as he did so. This position hurt him, but he refused to show it as much as I felt it.
“John, I don’t know what he would’ve done if he’d seen you still healing. I don’t trust him. “I mumbled.
“I don’t either. He said something about my brother’s movements, but right now I can’t do anything about it. Even if I Could, you’re my priority. I know you’re having issues with your powers.” He ran his fingers through my hair, and I felt tingles from his touch.
“I know…. but I think I know what to do.” I said quietly. I held his hand, and I heard a boisterous laughter from Garnet, followed by Ann, completely changing the mood in the room; I was relieved about that. Worrying for my mate had stressed me to no end…
“I got you a sweater!” She beamed, putting a small bag on the table.
“I smell Aikesh…. He didn’t try anything did he Alpha?” He asked, glaring at Xavier, who had an unharmed brownish gray rabbit.
“No, he only came to tell me about Herrakken.” Said John.
“Oh!” He exclaimed, drawing it out. “Permission to get someone to look into him sir.” He asked with a smile and a bow.
“Permission granted Gamma Garnet.” Said John, and Garnet immediately pulled out his phone.
“Your father has his own connections, but never forget you’re Alpha Stone too.” He smiled. “There, I got an old friend to look into it. Name’s Echo. He used to Guard the old Seventh Seat with me.”
“Why aren’t you there?” I asked. I thought he would maybe want to work with his friends than transfer somewhere else… because he sounded like this Echo person was a buddy.
“Classified.” He said stiffly, glaring at Xavier, who grinned.
“…No it isn’t!” He laughed teasing him.
“…. Xavier.” He warned.
“Is it that bad?” I asked, and he looked a little sheepish.
“A…. about 600-ish years ago… we got caught in bed with his daughter… we were her favorites… She wound up eloping with an elf later though.” He grinned.
“No tell them how you told me.” Chuckled Xavier.
“They’re too innocent for that.” He smiled but I saw his eyes flash linking someone.
“Garnet!” Yelled Ann blushing.
“You guys asked!” He said flustered.
“At any rate… I got the rabbit.” Said Xavier, who held a small grayish brown bunny. It was actually calm in his hands, which was a surprise seeing as how I could smell it was wild.
Put it on the table. I linked. If this works get ready to really hold it down….
“Understood.” He said placing it on the table like I instructed, and I put a hand on its back…. I really hoped it worked for my mate’s sake, but if it did, it would mean my power would really be downright inhumane.
I put a hand on John, not really knowing what to do, because this wasn’t in any books. I was only going off what was gathered from other texts. None spoke of my creator much, but I would make my hands glow green.
However, this time they radiated a deep red.
