Chapter 65
Kaiden
Babygirl was completely shocked by how calm we were. I had no memory of the night before, so I just accepted my brother’s word. He wasn’t big on lying, but he began to ramble. I got a little lost in thought, remembering the warning…. My wolf was silent, but my heart still felt as if I could shift at any moment.
The only thing that stopped me, was seeing the new faces added to my memories. They were Rogues as Beta said, but even still, I didn’t like that I was in the backseat of my own body.
“Oh and Shelly wants to talk to you too.” He said… I Think.
I ignored him focusing on my Luna. she followed us, but I couldn’t figure out her thoughts. They were too hazed to comprehend, and I was proud. She had finally blocked me out, or at least from casual prying. If I wanted, I could easily force it, but I will respect her wishes. She may not even know she had built up a wall, and breaking it might hurt her.
Her little eyebrows were scrunched, and she drank her coffee in little sips, not liking the taste of black espresso.
For me, however it was Perfect….
“Tell me about the witch? Those are rare.” I say flatly. I had not been listening to Beta after the reports, but whatever it was, it made my Luna giggle.
“She’s a kid, I guess like 14, boney, red hair, kept begging to be let go, the usual…. I just couldn’t lash her though.” Said Connor, opening the door to the packhouse before me. Any other day, I would have stepped in front of him, but I know he probably had run of the house for half a week, so he needs to get his wolf in check. I’ll give him today.
The room became silent, and everyone acted as if I had just won a fight with another Alpha. They bowed, daring not to look up, thinking that I would attack at the slightest provocation. Honestly, I was tired. Rakaam had not said anything the entire morning, to my delight, basically almost asleep in the back of my mind.
“Welcome back Alpha.” Smiled my sister, and she gave me a tight hug. She never hugs me like this, unless she’s done something.
“I’m not mad at you.” I laugh, though my wolf was a little pissed.
“Good, because I didn’t know if my plan would work.” She smirked, and gave a wink to babygirl.
I would have questioned her, but she would probably not tell me, so I left it alone. Soon everyone loosened their tenseness, and I walked into the living room proper. The smell of home. The smell of pups, warriors… and untold stacks of paper. I could scent the ink from halfway up the stairs. Eclipse bolted up the stairs past me in a swoosh, and ran to our room.
“Dibs on the shower Alpha!” She screamed happily, slamming the door. I chuckled and used the guest bathroom. I figured since she smelled like rabbit she needed the alone time to soothe her wolf. I opted for dark jeans and running shoes when I got out, knowing what awaited in my office.
Everything was incredibly organized waiting for me, and I saw that my Luna had followed me. At first, she peeped her head in the door, and I motioned for her to come in. She hesitated, but came to me. Babygirl decided to sit in my lap while I worked and went to sleep on me almost as soon as she opened her book. It was only 6pm. I smiled at how low her stamina was, but I was also proud that she was genuinely interested in pack business. She had begun asking questions, and I answered them to the best of my knowledge until I think I overloaded her.
I put her to bed and decided that I needed a break. I had gotten a mind link that there was unrest in the prison, since no warden had been there the entire day. I cracked my knuckles, and got my things. I took off my clothes, but could not shift.
/Rakaam stop fucking around/, I growl.
/I am not. We do not need power, if it means our little mate is afraid of us./ He growled back, just as intense. /Her eyes… I cannot do that to her again./ he whined.
Never in my life, had he ever turned down the opportunity to kill or dominate, yet here he was, unwilling to shift. Without the wolf, I am only the man…. I internally sighed. Babygirl had every right to be terrified, but I cannot be Alpha without Both of us….
/And how would we keep our mate safe, if we cannot shift?/ I threaten. He had not thought of this, I could tell by his silence, but I still couldn’t shift. He had blocked me from doing so.
/We will find a way./ He grumbled.
/No, we won’t; to show weakness is to be cast out as Alpha. She is Luna. What do you think would happen to her if someone other than Beta takes over, hmm? What do you think will happen if another Alpha defeats him, or worse, kills him because of Us not doing our job?/ I threaten again. He knew I was right, and we shifted. I felt bad for my wolf, I really did, but this is something that would have to be discussed at a later time. The pack and Luna come first.
I picked up my clothes, and my whip, and ran to the prison. The carnage had been dealt with, and the affected trees were cut down. Although, I could still smell the blood and ash that I had created in my mindless state. There was no control on either part of my soul. My wolf, and me had really lost touch with the world that night, and whatever he knew, he would not tell me.
Within the perfect walls, there was unrest. The moment I stepped into the reception area, I could smell and see how hard my brother had it. The smell of aggression and dominance. There were many prisoners that had bruises from fighting, trying to get rank. Wolves need this; to feel like they were higher or lower than others, to know your place is to feel like a pack. I roared a rumble that actually hurt my lungs. I know it was heard on every floor. It rattled the bars, and spooked the receptionist who was playing on her phone.
I commanded a guard to show me the prisoner that was misbehaving. I felt weaker than usual, however I know I was more than strong enough to beat anyone in this prison into submission. “Alpha, Bryson the Beast, a Rogue Alpha, was captured. Though he has not directly challenged, he has made our jobs difficult.” Said the guard. I nodded in understanding. I got off with him on the 4th floor, the next up would be solitary.
He definitely was an Alpha. He was about an inch shorter than me, with almost black, brown hair, and red eyes with black flecks. This was rare, it meant that he was most likely unable to control himself, as his human side, and his wolf were aggressive. He would actually make a terrible Alpha, and I understood why he had no mark on his neck, even though he smelled older than me.
“Kneel.” I command. I decided to give him a chance. He disrespectfully glared me in the eyes, and breathed deep my scent. He had initiated a challenge.
I raised an eyebrow. “You sure you want this? Because oh my lady I do…” I growl deeply, rattling the bars.
He seemed unphased. “I will not follow weakness. I smell it.” He cocked his head and walked to the bars. He smiled a toothy grin.
“Open it.” I command the guard.
Bryson exploded out the cage, and shifted immediately, getting me by my human throat and slamming me to the wall. The wolf was about to snap my neck, and Rakaam acted as if he did not realize what was happening. /What the hell Rakaam?/ I scream at him mentally, before turning instantly, already at a disadvantage. He chomped down, making me wheeze and my blood spatter. I clawed him deeply on the side of the throat, making him let go, slamming him on the other side of the small hall. I was a full head higher than him, but I had been disrespected and dominated for my wolf showing a grain of hesitation.
We circled in the small space. Everyone was quiet…. No one had ever seen me challenged, and nearly defeated like this. I tried to be honorable, and fight without my powers, but it seemed the Title of Beast took away his pain… He strutted as if nothing was wrong, despite his blood on the floor.
