Chapter 93

Connor
“I don’t get it!” I said pointing my fork at the vampire lord, who was drinking hot tea, before stabbing another breakfast sausage. She looked disappointed at me as she ate her takeout she ordered, but they can cook. “I mean like, why do I smell every vampire here except Lord Fancy Pants?” I said, drinking my orange juice.
I heard soft snarls from some of them and Nancy shook her head. “Connor, I don’t know but I didn’t sleep last night…can you not cause a riot?” She said, drinking her black expresso. I felt uneasy at first, but once my head hits a pillow, I am usually out. It comes from years of experiencing no guarantees of sleep. I cracked my neck, and popped my knuckles. I was starting to feel like my old self again.
Nancy didn’t trust them, I didn’t either, but as long as they didn’t make a move, I wouldn’t either. They steered clear of our room, and floor in general. There was breakfast, and it was quiet. I had even planned to visit the grand mall close to downtown, but with her so tired I left her alone.
“I have an idea, I can stand guard while you sleep, Nanners.” I said with a smile, which was immediately met with a small growl. It was hard to take my tiny mate seriously, but she hated that nickname.
“Good idea, but keep that up, and they’ll be driving you home.” She threatened me with a smile.
“But you love me?” I nudged her foot with mine.
“Yes, but sometimes if you love something, you leave it a couple hours drive away.” She said, and went upstairs, dragging me with her. I was slightly worried at her comment, I didn’t want to make her mad at me, just tease her a little bit. Titus growled in my head. /She is sleepy. Do not tease her, she is already unhappy./ He snarled.
I ignored him and let her curl up under the covers while I read a text from Shelly. Apparently, grandfather has a human friend. I was surprised to say the least. I didn’t read whatever else, my mate was more important.
I kissed her temple when she finally found rest, and went off on my big adventure, to the protest of my wolf. I was not going to leave the property, all I wanted was to find out about Lord Fancy Britches.
I went down the stairs, and I didn’t see him. I went to the reception desk, and decided to ask him. He was currently cleaning the table, but didn’t seem to enjoy my company. The blonde young man looked no older than 20 or so, but he was probably much older. He scrunched his nose.
“Ah, yes Beta Connor is it?” He said politely, though it was laced with venom. His perfectly pressed shirt was a bit wrinkled.
“Where is Lord Victor?” I ask the same way he addressed me. There was no need to be an ass, yet here we are.
“He is in the lower chambers, restricted to outsiders.” He responded icily. I nodded, and walked straight to the back of the dining area that was labeled ‘Restricted.’ It would look normal, in the off chance of an outsider or human inspector came, but it would be behind a secret wall or something.
“You cannot do this! The Master forbids outsiders!” He hissed at me aggressively.
I ignored him, but when he grabbed my arm, Titus tried to take over. “If he has nothing to hide, he would not mind me seeing what’s there.” I say firmly. Nancy was usually right about this kind of thing, and I wasn’t stupid either. They wouldn’t hurt my mate, not with me in the building. A wolf that lost his mate, especially when they knew who did it, would stop at nothing until they were either put down, or avenged their mate. I will level this place. They know that.
The blonde boy walked behind me, while I walked down the well lit hall. It was a small hallway with no bathroom, and an office but that would be a decoy. It would most likely be a secret passage or something, and I found it easily with my nose. There was a painting that smelled of the other vampires inside the conference room. I pulled it to the side and just like that, a wall revealed stairs.
“He will have my head!” The receptionist squealed, grabbing his neck and gulping.
“Well curiosity killed the blonde.” I said dryly, hearing a chuckle from the Lord with no scent. Though something honestly bothered me about this man. I got a vibe off him now that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up, but I did not faulter.
I went down the stairs, while the man used me as a shield. Each step it got colder, until it felt like winter. It was a good thing I was a wolf, seeing as how if I wasn’t, I would have been shivering. I was a little disappointed at how generic their ‘secret’ meeting was. It was a large table in a dimly lit elegant room. The wood was dark oak wood, with intricate carving, and they all seemed to be drinking blood from a willing human, but within chalices. I didn’t like how thick the smell of blood was down here, realizing that there was probably a chance that this was the source of the stench.
Some of them bared their fangs at me, but I didn’t care. I wanted to test my welcomeness. After all, it was the man at the head of the table who said I was under his protection.
“Why are you here?” Said Lord Victor pretty calmly. I could still sense no hostility from him.
“You said I was wel-” He cut me off, and pointed to the blonde pup.
“This one will leave.” He said sternly, and motioned for me to sit. No one spoke until the door closed.
“If I knew you would come, I would have procured you flesh, Charred One.” He said my title, and the ones who still looked at me with distain held their snarls.
“I do not partake.” I say flatly. Leave the gruesome to my brother, I thought. I got strange looks from the table. They saw humans as cattle, and I saw them as sentient beings. I save my killing only for protection. I do eat man meat, but I try to stay away from the stuff. I don’t actively seek it out like some do because deep down I kind of see it as unfair.
“Ah, a wolf with a soft heart.” He said coldly, as he was condemning me. I let a small growl emit out my throat. He ignored my warning. “As you know, the Church isn’t on good terms with us since they provided hunters with automatic steak shooters a few years ago. Now they hunt the witches with holy water bullets, and the wolves with vaporized silver. We weren’t able to prove it until now, but a human gave us what we needed. Evidence and eye witness account. I will meet with Ashital, to see this deadly thing the humans would have released, along with the other kings.” He said with no emotion. He was calm, hard to read, but I knew that name from anywhere. Very few people knew of the Wolf King, and fewer still knew his first name.
“My Lord, why should we care about a few dogs being put down?” Said one, but before I could say anything, Lord Victor had him by the throat.
“Because this breaks the treaty. I have no interest in war.” He let him go, letting him drop like a sack of potatoes.
I understood now why he was so accommodating, he didn’t want to fight us and the humans.
“You do not need to worry about this fledgling, we will seek peace before justice. We are all on one accord with this.”
“I am no pup….” I grumble.
“And I am the first vampire.” He said icily. I had a feeling I should shut my mouth.
After there was silence, he continued to talk about their issues with his subordinates like I wasn’t there, but I had had enough adventures for one day. I didn’t even question why he did this. Why did he treat me as his pack member? In all honesty, I just wanted to check on Nancy after their meeting was over. I would leave the unanswered questions for tomorrow.
I climbed up the stairs to see she was still asleep and I crawled under the sheets, careful not to wake her.
I couldn’t sleep now with the news I had gotten, but I accepted it as best as I could. War. The word played in my mind. I didn’t read a lot in school but one thing they taught us was the Great War.
Back then, the world was chaotic. Entire families, packs, even races were killed. Humans had it no better. It was the innocent that suffered most. It was the weak that were crushed.
