Chapter 98

Kaiden
I yawned, it was 5:50 in the morning, and the sun wasn’t even up yet, but I had shit to do. Fridays were the worst, and things started to slowly ease into their usual pace. The prisoners also were unruly last night, but I figured that I would sort out what was wrong right now. I left out a half hour later, and decided to drive in the rain instead of run as my wolf or jog as the man.
I was getting soft and lazy now, I chuckled to myself, making my wolf growl. A few fights and finding out more on the bastard that stabbed my brother should just about do it. That should keep me in shape, I figured. I was tempted to just kill him, but for my brother to give him mercy would have been wasted.
I pulled in and parked into my almost never used reserved spot. We had gotten new humans yesterday, and they were unruly. They probably weren’t used to fair treatment, and I would figure that out first. I walked in the side door, to the surprise of many of my guards who better had been on break on their phones. I narrowed my eyes at them.
“Morning Alpha.” One of them said casually, I gave them a grumpy growl, and walked to the human side of the prison. I got some coffee from their mess hall, that was empty at the moment, and found the guard that was responsible for their general wellbeing. She was a short female warrior, a blonde with violet eyes, and she went about to my shoulder. I knew her brother, as he worked a floor up with the riffraff, but she was a fairly calm natured woman compared to her hyper twin.
“Morning Toni, I’m going to observe a little.” I mention, leaning against the end of the hall. Nonviolent humans got to roam their levels without trouble, except the mess hall, as those who were violent, or known hunter transfers used that area later. They had their own yard area for their safety.
The nonviolent floors didn’t have conventional cell walls, but rather they were plaster. Their doors and room interiors were also as normal as possible. They could also leave if they wanted, just not during nighttime. This was something my father had come up with well before I was born, but he never lived to see it happen, because 200 years ago the prison was basically a dungeon. It didn’t get renovated until the 1900’s.
One at a time, with her mate, they opened the cell doors and let them out after checking for weapons. If they got caught, they would get solitary, and the next time, they would be transferred to violent. Most didn’t know me, because I was never down here, so I got to see the shit show that ensued after they let out one bearded man in the middle. He was tall for a human, about as tall as my sister, with red hair and brown eyes.
The man bolted out the door, breaking protocol, and ran to the exit as if he were going to escape. He screamed and thrashed around when Toni’s mate grabbed him, however he grunted. The human kicked him in the jewels…. It was a pretty solid kick too, and I was impressed he didn’t bite him for it. “Let me go!” He growled aggressively.
“Bring him here.” I commanded; I had seen enough.
He glared at me, enough for it to be a challenge, and I shut out Rakaam before all these innocent humans saw violence. I sucked in an agitated breath. “For the sake of peace, I shall give you mercy. Let him get something to eat.” I grumbled. It would set a bad example for my men as well. So with tight lips, I let them all go to the mess hall, and they had their breakfast. The male guard, pissed as he was, walked with this human still subdued until I motioned for him to sit at a table.
“Guard Smith here will let you go, and in return I expect you to behave.” I told him without growling.
“What’s your angle?” He said suspiciously, being let go. Toni had brought us both bacon and eggs, with orange juice. I thanked her and blinked twice. I didn’t quite get what he was getting at. “Fatten us up, and ship us out like cattle, hmm?” He said, not eating until he saw me eat.
“No. You are to live here the remainder of your life in peace mortal, so long as you cooperate. I cannot release you, but I can at least try and give you basic creature comforts.” I said casually.
He scoffed. “Then I guess the screams I hear are just ‘ambient noise’.” He said, scratching his wild beard.
“No, I personally kill or punish those who cause disorder, attempt escape, or wolves who my men can’t handle. But see the thing is,” I took a breath, “for now, you’re on the nonviolent floor. The floor where you are free to roam the dormitories, and not in a cell.” I mention.
He looked around at everyone else, who seemed to be getting along fine. I really did try to make it as if they were just on vacation somewhere, or at least detained humanely. He still held a scowl that could slice meat, but otherwise said nothing. “Try not to escape, you may not like it here, but I can promise you, that you’re safe.” I tell him, giving him a pat on the shoulder, and then I headed to see the wolf that had the gall to stab my brother.
/You did not have to suppress me./ Growled Rakaam suddenly.
/Yes, I did. It’s too early and killing him would only make us look bad./ I growl at him, and we both chose to drop it.
The man was up, and in his cell, reading a fairly thick book. I recognized it from anywhere, it was the Shamrock Holmes Series, the third one, babygirl’s favorite. “Open it.” I told the guard, making him jump. He didn’t realize I was even here.
I sat down and rested my chin on the back of the chair before Rakaam could kill him. Interrogation time. He didn’t seem intimidated by me, and held his gaze to me. This was the second time I was challenged today, but this time it meant something. No one cared about a human, but another wolf is another story.
I growled enough to rattle the bars a bit, and it forced him to kneel. “What the fuck is your problem little wolf?” I snarled.
“You. This place. Everything.” He said with a bowed head, but disrespectful tone. It took all I had not to shift in that small chair and just rip him to shreds. Why did my brother show mercy? With this attitude Leon is just going to kill him.
“I am going to ignore your offence.” I said as Rakaam growled disapprovingly in my head enough to give me a headache. “I know where your family is.” I tell him ignoring his agitation.
His eyes lit up with hope, “They’re alive?! I must go to them. Please release me.” He said all at once.
“But why should I let you go? Disrespectful. Challenging. Dishonorable little wolf.” I growl.
“I haven’t seen my family in so long sir… please.” He pleaded. I yawned.
“Your actions speak louder than your words little wolf. Rot until I decide otherwise.” I said getting up, but I never let my guard down. This guy acted like a Rogue. He would only make LemonMoon trouble, and they would hate me for it.
I sensed him behind me, and I turned around swiftly, clawing at empty air. He was on his knees, hands on the floor. “Your highness…. I have never begged for anything in my life, not even to stay in my old pack but please…. I need my family.” He begged.
I looked at him with red eyes for a long time, before deciding to continue with my duties. The cell closed with him still kneeling, and my heart was not going to be swayed by honeyed words. He would rot there until he proved he was capable of pack life. Releasing him as he was wasn’t good for anyone.
/Get inmate 1243 regular therapy, and we’ll see what Dr. Wong says./ I linked the guard, before leaving the floor.
My patience had been spent, and I regretted driving. I left my car at the prison, and jogged home, letting the cold noon sun hit me while I ran the trails. I smelled babygirl on the wind, which was weird. She was never one for exercise, so I had to investigate. She was with Connor, Nancy, and the pups. I remembered the park I was approaching; it was the one I took Mini to. Soon, the trees were parted to reveal a small park with swings and slides. There was also a big field for them to run in. I smiled and waved, and most of the parents bowed, which got Nancy, my brother, and my mate’s attention.
“Connor.” I say with a false frown.
“Kaiden.” He replied just as coldly, making some of the parents nervous.
I growled at him, and he growled back with the same intensity. He didn’t know I was messing with him. Perfect.
“Don’t start something you can’t finish.” I warn.
“You started it.” He growled.
“Eat shit.” I growled back. We eyed each other for a while in a ‘tense’ silence. He wasn’t sure if I was faking or not, and it was getting harder not to smile, so I gave up.
[I missed you guys.] I linked him, and it took him by surprise.
“I love you too. Now sit down before you give the pack a heart attack.” He said while I sat next to Eclipse. /Not as much as Jerold missed Noah I hope/, he linked. We both burst into laughter, mostly because I really did miss my Beta… it was so quiet without him. The pups were all playing, but I noticed Caleb was in her lap. His eyes were red, and I wondered what made the little guy so upset, and have such a calm face.
