Book 2:Chapter 95

John
His boom sounded with an authority that made even my father’s wolf submit. It was something I don’t think even mother could have noticed being next to him, but I did with my heightened instincts.
There was also the sound of a car starting, but I would wait to say anything about that.
“Yes, and I wish to maintain some semblance of peace if it is at all possible.” I said calmly.
“I do as well. I knew of Heidi’s existence, being the High Archbishop, and leader of the 13th Chapter, but I didn’t tell him. Gulriniel… in the old times was the Lord’s right hand. In today’s time… That Level of carnage is not needed… Nor the Left hand of Night’s brutality…. I assume for him to be dead, Gulteer is also dead.”
“He is.” I said leaving out that he can’t die.
“Gulriniel’s powers will become mine, and Gulteer will be revived, probably in a few hours. I would rather not have to fight him regardless of that fact.” He said plainly. “I’ll be there in an hour, maybe 45 minutes.”
“How long have you been on your way here?” I asked.
“Since I felt Gulriniel release his power. He may be the First Priest, however I am the First Chosen. I can bet you wonder why I am so calm about all this too. I am because I have died and been reborn just as many times, though I remember every life…. Sometimes I was just a farmer… other times an officer, most times a priest, though in others I had wives and children, increasing the blessed blood of my Lord, as it was his wish. This life I was tasked with bringing peace, so this life I will Handle what needs to be done.”
“I am my goddess’s chosen as well.” I was cut off.
“I know. But know that Your god is not as powerful as Mine. If you intend to use her tricks on me, they will not work. Heidi don’t try anything either. I am Much older than I look, and I will not hesitate to turn you to ash and start the war if you come with hostility.” He warned.
“I morn my demon Priest.” She sneered as if he were dirt. I’d never seen such authority from my Luna, because right now she looked and scented it.
“Do not hate the rest of us. Gulriniel was commanded to stand down, and disobeyed our Lord… he will likely come back as only a regular person without knowledge of who or what he is now. I however, now hold right to his boon, and with it I will only be a deterrent for what is to come…” He said ominously.
I knew who he meant; I wasn’t stupid. Training with a man who saw the devastation of the Second War gave me a chance to hear so many…. Many stories of our people. We were not innocent either, but I could understand how even now… even after the treaty, distrust was there.
“How do we know you will enter our gates, and not have the Tredecim with you?” I said with a frown.
“Because I know you heard my engine. I come alone. I will burn the body myself, and the only passenger that will come with me will be his urn. He disobeyed our master, and for it none will retaliate by even the Holy Seat’s order.” He said with conviction.
“Then by your own words, know if it is false, you will not see your creator when you die on the grounds of oath breaking.” I said hearing him chuckle.
“Even a Champion of the Lord of Light is not exempt from that.” He said as if he’d heard something funny.
We hung up, and with the pack evacuated, all that was left was getting the other Warriors and even the Betas gone. I still didn’t trust this.
“This is too convenient… too simple.” I said putting my clawed hands over my face.
“I know. He must have the gift of Foresight. It’s like hindsight, only you know the best option Before the event. It’s a gift the King has as well… though he does not use it often.” Said father.
“Son, we wish for you to lead.” Said mother, whose arm should have been healed by now…. If anything it looked almost worse if not for the stitches.
“It is why I put you in My chair. One day, you will lead both packs, maybe more…. One day, you will be the Honored Second…. I want you to be as confident as the man as you are as the wolf.” He said putting a firm pat on my shoulder.
“Father I-” He cut off my complaint.
“The Crave Does that. Hell, you should have seen me my first time. It took Aemi to pull me out of it after what was it dear? Three days?” He asked.
“Four.” She corrected. “Son don’t fret.” She said hugging me around the neck. It felt… natural. Terracotta had already accepted her as mother, and I had too. I couldn’t remember the exact moment when, but I saw her as my mom… It scared me how in my mind they replaced my adopted parents so fast….
She growled softly when she hugged me tighter. “Let him go Aemi, he’s a man now.” Said father.
“I don’t care.” She countered. Had she been any other she wolf, Terracotta would have been Livid, but instead he wagged his tail.
Heidi looked a little homesick, so I pulled her in to a doting hug as well. She held tears for her demon, but refused to properly morn for him. He’d saved my life, and a few other wolves as well. It couldn’t be denied that he earned those tears… but she would stop suppressing herself when we were in private after this. For now, we had to focus on the dangerous aftermath of the Hunters… and who they brought to our door.
I cleared my throat. “Father I request then if I am to deal with the priests, that you leave.” I said firmly.
He growled. “I would not leave my only living son.”
I growled back. “If both of us die, it is the end of our line. Either You leave or I Have to. I didn’t work this hard….” He finished what I was going to say.
“You didn’t work this hard to see it all go to shit. I’ll go.” He relented, taking my mother’s hand.
I linked the rest of the Warriors to be at the edge of the border so that if the worst happened, they could run. Me and father shook wrists, like Alphas would.
“I meant it when I said that I want you to be the Leader you were meant to be…. It’s just Hard. I had to stay away your whole life until this point…. Only to send you off to fight your own blood… and now confront this alone too. You make me prouder than I can tell you.” He said giving me a Warrior’s embrace for a brief moment, leaving out the door.
“If you stayed, then Both Alphas would be present. We can’t risk that.” I said knowing that he heard me. If we both die… who would protect the packs?
Now Heidi and I were in their office alone, and I got the gun from under the counter. It was a standard 9mm, nothing fancy, but it was the biggest weakness of humans. They were weird like that. They could die by nearly accident, and lived such short lives, but they were like hornets…
“Do you think you’ll need it?” Asked my mate.
“Hopefully not. He swore an oath, meaning that if he breaks it he’ll be sent to Hell… I don’t think that it would be Wise for a man of the cloth to be sent to the demons he slays….” I said thinking out loud. “At any rate, let’s meet him at the border with the body.” I said going downstairs with my mate.
She said nothing, but followed me to a pack truck I had to borrow. I drove it to the hospital, which had the body in the morgue. It would likely be drained of blood… since he died so violently, but that wasn’t my problem.
The priest was wrapped in white cotton sheets, though there was No blood to be seen. He smelled so holy up close that my head hurt, but I was not worried… Him being dead meant that he couldn’t hurt anymore of us….
His body was light enough that I put it in the back of the truck bed, but I worried about her. She wasn’t really talking, and her smile was gone… she even looked a little pale. She’d broken her bond with her demon to free him… and I could only guess that it was affecting her more than she wanted to admit.
The drive was silent, until I heard her mumbling. It was so low I couldn’t make out what she was saying, but she looked down in concentration.
“What are you doing?” I asked.
“I sent a prayer to the Horned One… I don’t want him too mad at Rahrraam…” She said with a small smile.
“To be honest I want in on that myself…. I pray that little shit return to you.” I said aloud, but she protested.
“…The Bond is Broken. He holds no attachment to me anymore.” She said sadly.
“Who’s to say he doesn’t want to redo the bond?” I said pulling over at the border of LapisMoon.
“If that were the case, Rahrraam’s body would not have turned to ash…” She said somberly, and I left well enough alone. She needed time to morn, and that wasn’t helping her.
