Chapter 106

Eclipse
I facepalmed. “I hate that nickname.”
Shelly giggled. “I think it’s cute, better than ‘babygirl’…. Kaiden is so corny.” She said shaking her head.
“Oddly enough I Like that one…. .wait… Alpha was born in the late 1700’s, early 1800’s right?” Shelly nodded. “Did he fight in any wars?” I asked.
“No, we didn’t interfere with the human world… but the eating was Good.” She said looking up in the sky. She laid down, putting her hands behind her head.
“I bet shifting in all those clothes sucked too.” I said sitting up. Those two were Really going at it.
“Tell me about it. The dress, petticoat, powder in our hair. We left the native peoples alone because they respected that we were monsters, and they knew our borders… but the other humans though their muskets were enough, without silver. Their pride kept the grocery store Well stocked.” She said reminiscing. “But I don’t care about any of that…. I smile because I remember father unlike those two. It still hurts to find old documents, or see the paintings of them in my office desk. I keep Saying I’ll put it up, but that something humans won’t experience.”
“What’s that?” They felt like we did….
“No they don’t… They are a people who grow old…They move With Time….”
“I don’t understand.” I mumbled.
“Every day under the Sun… is a day for a mortal… Time moves…. When they lose loved ones, of Course they hurt… anyone would… They mourn… they cry as we do… but for an immortal creature we’re Stuck in time… I feel the pain of losing them even now… but it is Fresh… I’ve had over 200 years to mourn Luna…. Longer than two mortal lifetimes… and I Still feel this way..”
I was silent to let her continue. I wasn’t as old as she was…
“I was born to stop aging at 23…. It feels like Yesterday that I got the news… that I had to bury them and Connor was so small I had to get a wet nurse for him… That Was Not Fun… All the while holding the territory as Alpha and Luna…. That is what it Truly means to live forever… and those around you live until their killed. Time moves forward for mortals, but Stops for you in your heart…” She said truthfully.
“No… I think you won’t heal because you won’t mourn.” I said standing. “I think while you do that, we could put up the painting in your office… plus… it’ll be good for the pups to see who Alpha was.” I mumbled.
“Alpha Charred was the greatest warrior besides the King…So kind that he is the reason Horizon is clean… not a dungeon. Yet, human poison killed him. It is an honor to be of his blood… and an even greater one to pass it on. Let’s go. I don’t think they’ll even notice we’re gone.” She chuckled. “We’re leaving!” She shouted.
They continued to swordfight…. They didn’t hear a word.
“…. I’m going to go put my butt fur in the yogurt!” I screamed.
“That’s good.” Said Kaiden, dodging Connor’s blows. They smashed their sticks and looked for others…
Me and Shelly laughed, taking our time to walk to the packhouse.
The walk was uneventful… but it seemed the closer we got, the slower she walked…
“It’s alright.” I said holding her hand.
She held it in a vice grip.
“I’m fine.” She lied.
“Hi Luna!” Waved John…. He had a handful of worms…… I didn’t ask.
“We’re having a Worm Race!” Yelled Jason.
“We’ll get them cleaned up and ready for bed.” Said Heidi.
“Awe!” The pups all growned.
“Mommy I don’t want to go to bed!” Cried Michelle. She hugged her mothers legs, and almost on cue, Eric was there to pick her up.
“Then how about you stay up with daddy?” He asked, and they all cheered.
“Can we watch My Littlest Horsey?” Begged Izzy.
“No, it’s their turn.” He said as we went inside. The girls whined that it wasn’t fair, but the boys high fived.
She hesitated to go up the stairs… but she went up slowly afterwards. She held her head as Gamma, and when we got to her office, I could see why she didn’t want to hang it.
Alpha Charred looked Exactly like Kaiden… and her mother looked Exactly like her. The only thing that was different, was Luna Charred’s blue eyes…. And Alpha Charred held the eyes of the king, being darker skinned….
“Dad, unlike Kaiden, had full control of Raashikraam, his wolf. I always loved the way he rolled his r’s, and even in his most angered state, he was still gentle. He gave everyone a chance… I’m sorry I hid you away dad… Mom you were a good Luna…. You both don’t deserve sitting, getting dusty and forgotten.” She shed tears.
I rubbed her back. “They wouldn’t want you crying about it. You handled it how you thought you could.”
“I know… but I never gave myself this chance… I was always ‘too busy’ or pretended they were still on vacation.” She said wiping her eyes. There was an old nail in the wall already there. I bet it was because she put it there.
We stood there a while, in silence. Now that her walls had come down, and she allowed herself to grieve, she seemed a bit more vulnerable… She was Always Gamma, always the strong third in command, and even for a short time Alpha.
I know that part had to be hard… Men don’t like seeing women in positions so powerful…
We stayed like this until the pups were put to bed, and Eric could come be with her.
I went to my room with Alpha, and we snuggled. I didn’t talk to him about it. He’d already told me that he didn’t remember his parents, and when he saw the painting, he had no issue with it… It was Shelly who raised him in his eyes, so the most that bugged him about it, was how similarly his mother and sister looked.
And I needed to get my sleep… tomorrow was the first day of school for the pups.
--------
I woke up in strong arms, but it seemed that Kaiden was already up. He seemed to be thinking, or maybe meditating before it was time to run the pack. It was early dawn, and he yawned, showing his fangs. “I was hoping you’d stay asleep a little longer, because I just wanted to have you to myself.” He mumbled sleepily.
I yawned. What wakes me up so early is his strong gaze alerting my instincts, and his wolf wakes him up like this. He’s always been an early bird, up before the sun, and going to bed late at night. “Kaiden can’t you just go back to bed?” I ask, completely sleepy.
“No can do babygirl, now come with me for a run before the pups get up.” He nudged me until I got up with him, and I groggily put on some running clothes. Today was the pups’ first day of school, and the run would calm both our nerves. I wanted them to be ready, especially Isabelle, since she was such a daddy’s little girl.
We ran down the path together, but it was anything but peaceful. Well for me anyway. Alpha could run the trails, he did it every day…. Me not so much. I was fit, but not like this. It was worth it however, because he took his shirt off, and I could see his muscular chest. I could see the sweat on his body. Shimmer wanted to lick it. I sighed, it was too early for that. He rapped the shirt around his neck like a towel, and slowed his stride. The sun was starting to peep from the horizon, and we turned to run back home. I felt like gelatin, but it did calm my nerves.
He opened the door for me like a true gentleman. Isabelle was already up and brushing her teeth, while Caleb was already ready. My little boy looked neither excited, nor happy, but he had picked a nice little outfit. He reminded me of his father, in a blue polo shirt and some khaki pants. I gave up on the idea of a dress for Izzy before I could even think too much about it too hard, because I know that little girl is wild. She liked jumping, running, and fighting the boys, so I doubt she would behave like a princess.
Kaiden snickered, obviously hearing my thoughts, and I huffed, picking a nice matching blue unicorn t-shirt and My Tiniest Horsey jeans for her to ware. She happily put it on all by herself like a big girl, but I still had to tie her shoes. Connor had made them breakfast, and for once it wasn’t burned. He seemed to be proud of himself, and his mate patted him on the head.
Anyone else would have been offended, but to be honest, that was hard to do with Connor. He looked so content that if he were his wolf, his tail would be wagging.
