Book 2: Chapter 88
John
I watched the sun rise with Garnet and Rahrraam. They were in chipper spirits, sharing a roasted rabbit, while I had gotten some bacon and eggs from a Warrior. I was told that my father would be there shortly, but I didn’t know how much longer that would be.
That was until I saw him walking with Gulteer, the man that he’d spoke of with so much distaste. He didn’t seem happy, but at least they weren’t fighting. From what he’d said, I was also surprised that he wasn’t still out there cackling.
“I’m back… and I should …thank Gulteer. Those poachers were actually Headhunters. They search for their kin, Ann included.” Said Ron.
I was fully awake now. “Fuck. Did they track us, or did they guess?” I asked.
“A little bit of both.” Said Gulteer. “I will stay a while longer, if only for the taste of fresh sinner.” He said with a menacing grin. His teeth weren’t white, but rather a nasty gray, along with black gums.
“Dear, you’re on a diet, master’s orders.” Chastised Titafina. She held a small kettle, but something told me that whatever it was inside, it wasn’t good. “Plus, This is more than enough.” She said angrily.
“Two souls are Not enough.” He said with crossed arms.
“They will have to be. You heard what master said.” She said putting the pot gently in his hands. I could hear it boiling, and I could smell nothing from the pot, but it made my wolf alert.
“I would like you both to leave. We can deal with hunters.” Ron said firmly.
Gulteer sighed. “As you could deal with the literal magical beacon that led their instincts to this place? I will say, you don’t have to accommodate me, I have my own portable pocket realm.” He said tossing a rock out his pocket, and it became a door. “I’ve been up all night, as have you. Since you will not welcome me, I will stay where I’m wanted.” He grumbled.
“You aren’t wanted because you are one who Cannot be trusted, he who kills his host.” He snarled.
“Oh right. I did kill your entire family and wear your father’s visage while doing it. Sorry about that.” He said as if he didn’t care.
Ron stopped snarling to stare at him. I can’t lie and say we all didn’t with him.
“What my husband Means is that we are creatures of darkness in its purest form…. We have less compassion to creatures that become our pray…. For their fear and pain feeds us just as much as any meat. I’m sure my demon’s son here told you that already though.” She said with a small glare at her mate.
“And you wounder why no one wants you around.” Said Ron. “But as it stands, we Must do something about the Headhunters. They will get wise when their scouts don’t return.”
“I suppose a raid on their hideout wouldn’t be a bad idea.” Said Gulteer scratching his chin.
“And make the news with your methods? I’m sure you’ll attract the attention of the Holy Seat himself while you’re at it.” Said Ron.
“I could do it alone.” Said Garnet. “I have thousands of confirmed kills, a few more wouldn’t hurt anything.”
“It Will and you Know it.” Said Ron crossing his arms.
“But-” He was cut off.
“You’re heart’s in the right place, but don’t volunteer for something that would Ruin your new position. You’re going to retire this year. If you take a unit out with you, you may attract attention to yourself.” Warned my father. “I will go myself with any who volunteer, Excluding You.” He said firmly.
“I was thinking I’d take Xavier with me. He’s an exhale. He won’t report my confirmed kills to anyone.” He said bowing his head.
“It’s up to your Alpha then what to do with you two, but I would Not recommend it. I still have the intention on sending my Shadow Warriors.” He said with a frown, motioning him. “You know as well as I do that they must report your confirmed kills if you don’t, and your dual citizenship status would not be terminated because you’re still doing jobs. Meaning you would Stay enlisted as a Shadow, and you cannot legally be my son’s Gamma until you are banished.”
“I won’t allow it then… you’re so close to retirement, and I know it’s not the life you wish.” I said and he looked as if he wanted to argue with me, but he only bowed his head out of respect. “Right now our priority will be the pack perimeters. Headhunters are nothing to laugh at, and if they find out about Heidi with her impossibly scarlet red fur, her horns, or even worse, that she’s half witch…. They would swarm this place like flies.
“…as you wish Alpha… I’ll get Xavier.” He said leaving.
“You did the right thing son…. As it is I personally sent his retirement application to his Alpha. As it is, the only way they will release a Shadow of their duty is if they die, or you defeat his Alpha in hand to hand combat.” Said Ron, “Adding tallies to his confirmed kill count is like saying he’s trying to freelance, something illegal.”
“Yes, and I will discuss something a little more pressing while he fetches his friend.” Said Gulteer. “I’ve never seen anything like this. I thought you might want to take a look at this too John. He grabbed at the air, and pulled a rifle out of the nothingness.
“I’ve not seen this model before.” I said taking it from him. It looked like an expensive rifle. It looked like an MK22, though the barrel was shorter. It also had a custom clip that held more ammo, and held a gadget on it that was wet…. It dripped likely holy water on the bullet before it was fired.
“Take out a shell.” He commanded, and I did. The wet bullet looked to be made of silver. I held onto it as it burned my skin, but only because of what was inside. It was glass, with small silver speckles in the center of the bullet…. So not only was it holy water, there was liquid silver in there too….
“…. What the Jentucky Fried Fuck is this?” I asked, seeing the eyes of the old witch change from green to red.
“What happens when mortals are allowed ‘freedom’.” He snarled as a dragon would. Titafina put a hand on his shoulder, and he let out an agitated sigh. “Part of the agreement for my allotment in this world, was staving my palm off the mortal’s backs.”
“Your destruction was unwarranted.” Said Ron. “But even this is too bold… the Church is still being audited, so I Know they won’t admit to supplying these to humans… but I saw something almost like this a few years ago… it makes me think that they evolved what they already had into some super weapon.” He too was handed the gun. “I mean look at this.”
He twisted the damn thing into four threaded segments….
“Just that makes it more dangerous.” I said. “I bet you could turn it into a makeshift shotgun. Since the bullets are so thin and glass in the middle, the holy water, liquid silver, and silver shards would fly through the air like buckshot…”
“It was warranted. Had I not allowed the humans who fled with Atlantis’s secrets, had I not allowed them to do more than snivel in the dark holding torches, there would be more of This” He yanked the bullet from my hand with magic, and crushed it. Blood and silver oozed slowly on the ground “I left it to the wolves to destroy the secrets left from the sunken city, and I turn my gaze a few thousand years later to find they now make holy water bullets too.” He sneered.
“I must agree with my husband; if the Wolf King wishes to hold the High Seat warm for the young master, then he is responsible for what his subordinates do.” She said sternly.
“We didn’t know about this either.” Said Ron. “As my King’s Second, I would have been the first to know… but this is pretty dire.” He said taking the gun from me.
“We must contact grandfather. He needs to know they are still making and distributing weapons.” Said Heidi.
“You’re right my little one.” Said Gulteer. “I refuse to join their council, or speak with them… but this would affect my dark witchlings…. And that will not due.”
His eyes went from red to solid black, and there was no indication of eve so much as a pupil. I’d never seen anything like that; it was unnatural.
“We will stay.” Said Titafina. “They Will eventually come with their scouts missing, but they will not expect us, and I will teach you what it truly means to be a True one of the Dark.”
I didn’t like the sound of that, but Heidi seemed calm. I could feel it in her bond how strong she was. I knew in my heart… she would not have the grit to turn a human to dust unless she had no other choice… but this would be one of those times. I didn’t want her to Change into a bad person either.
I didn’t want her to become evil…. But she was chosen by the most evil patron in all the pantheon. There would be a time that she would have to do something I wouldn’t approve of, but I knew that when I found out about the Horned One. Right now, I would support her any way I can. At this moment, I would try to mediate the bridge between the witches and wolves….
