Chapter 42

Kaiden
“Good morning, Mary.” I Yawned, Rakaam with me, making it rumble. She backed away to the corner of the cell, completely awake and I pulled up a chair, turning it around, and rested my chin on the yellow plastic back.
“What do you want with me?” she stuttered, pulling her knees up to her chest, completely terrified that I was in my boxers, and she was only about as tall as my mate, I sighed.
“Just answers.” I said calmly.
“…. You… you monsters want to find the rest of my family, don’t you?” She asked.
“No. And we may be monsters, but so long as you don’t make a fuss, no one will harm you. If anything, you’re a level 1 human, meaning you should actually be in the nice cells that look like apartments, not holding.” I told her getting a little agitated. “So why don’t you just cooperate, and I will leave you be.”
“I don’t even know what you did to my son…” She said looking at the cell floor.
I didn’t really care about the feelings of a single human; there is no room for it. I did what I had to do for the pack. She was just mated to the wrong male, and in the Wrong place at the wrong time. Though, as contradictory as it sounded, I did make sure her pup was adopted.
“I have done him a service by giving him to the Officers who swear oaths in blood to protect the peace between our peoples.” I said with another yawn. “Had he grown up with your husband, he would be a Hunter, a parasite to both our worlds by breaking the truce, destroying the very peace You enjoyed until now.” I grumbled.
“….You sound like you’re talking about a football game…” She whispered.
“This is no Game we play human.” I said losing my calm for a moment. “You may be stuck here, but he has his freedom and happiness. He was adopted by humans, being raised ignorant of us as he should be. He is so young he will not remember you, but find solace that he has a healthy life in the hands of good people.”
“I can’t in good conscious tell you anything… he was TWO… he had Nothing to do with Any of this…. You come in here... wanting me to cooperate but all you’ve done from me is Take.” She said with a shaking voice.
“Then I, in good conscious for the sake of my people, must do what I have to Do if you don’t. Hunters as I’ve already told you kill my people on mass. This entire town has been here, minding our own, yet your people come here to rampage and pillage because they think they are the Law. And I know you stall, but your pup is safe. I know you know Something.” I growled lowly, and it rattled the bars.
“I…” She stuttered.
“What do you know about what your husband was doing?” I let my claws come out, I didn’t bring anything else, so this would have to do, she was already terrified, so I figured if she doesn’t talk, I’d just eat her.
“…. What of my son?” She asked, looking down, smelling of fear, not cooperating. I growled as a human does.
“He was adopted, and now lives in another state. He his been placed with mortals that will raise him without Hunter influence. One day you may see him if he chooses to become an Officer.” I said truthfully. As a child confiscated by the Secret Police, it was entirely possible.
“…. And I will be here the rest of my life?” She asked looking down.
“Unfortunately, that’s something I can’t help. But what I Can do is prevent who’s left from causing more bloodshed.” I said agitated, though she took my growl as aggression.
It made me feel a bit like a dick, but I’d rather feel a little shitty than wake up one day to my mate, blood, and pack all laid before my rotting pelt… that was the seriousness of it all. It was my job to protect everyone, and hers was to spill what she knew, or my wolf would spill her guts.
Her eyes grew wide and her mouth agape. “…oh my god please don’t kill me.” she stuttered whispering.
“Won’t have to if you tell me what you know.” I let my fangs come out, no growling, just fangs. Next would be fur, then I would just eat her. Simple enough plan. Rakaam wanted to just eat her now, but I needed the information.
The growing threat of death loosened her lips. It helped that I was a very large Alpha.
“…um” she shivered, “My husband was a construction worker. He was in a biker club called the Roasted Boar. Um... He would bring home bear skins and sell them later. He didn’t make a lot, but every other year he would go bear hunting with his friends.” She said stalling, so I escalated to get her to hurry up.
“You’re holding out, I know there’s more if you know the name of the place.” I let my hair on my head and down my back become fur, and let my tail come out. My simple plan worked as she’d lost more and more of her nerve.
“Oh my god, wait, wait please!” She held her hands in front of her, I was still in the chair, but my patience was very thin. I put deep claw marks in the chair and let my eyes go red. “Um in the basement, I heard them talking about going to the Burned something, Charcoal something, no what was it?” She shook, but her eyes looked like they were lying. I could hear it in her heart, and she realized that I had.
I let out a growl that shook the cell metal. I slowly started to shift proper, but if she didn’t hurry up, there was only so long I could do that before I would be my wolf, and Rakaam would have his late night snack.
“THE CHARRED SOMETHING, THEY WERE GOING TO HUNT IN THE CHARRED SOMETHING” She screamed. I reverted to my human form fully and got up. I walked to her trembling body and grabbed her by the arm. I made her face me.
“When.” I growled lowly. Rakaam wanted blood, but now was not the time.
“The 5th of October; they were complaining about it being Tommy’s birthday that Sunday, please I don’t think I know anymore.” She pleaded. I let her go; she was telling the truth. I could only assume that they stopped talking after they noticed her.
I called the Secret Police with the tip as soon as I got out of the cell. They would do an investigation, while I set up defenses. They wouldn’t know that they were against 1 large pack, instead of 1 normal sized one. They wouldn’t know that I called Leon of the LemonMoon, getting their support as well.
I decided to let the girl live, because I didn’t feel like having to take a shower. My Luna would also smell all the gore on me, and probably be upset with me. That kind of thing scares her, and she doesn’t like the smell I get when I eat them. I don’t think she Knew outright that I ate man meat, but I noticed she’d be more timid the nights that I had. So, I will have to be on a diet. /No. We will not./ Growled Rakaam, the glutton.
Wolves work together, especially for something this important. 767 wolves depended on me. Every one of them lived simple lives where they looked to me as their leader, and here I am, with only a few days to prepare for the potential burning of those people... just to get my skin. I made my way back to my office, and they were all still in there, doing whatever they had to do for the day while huddled around my coffee maker. When I walked in, they bowed, and it was down to business.
I saw the sun rise, while I looked at a map of the human town on my laptop, and the new map of the territory on my desk.
“What if we evacuated everyone to the second packhouse?” Connor said tiredly.
He was right. They probably wouldn’t be after the former CrimsonMoon, because they wouldn’t know that the packs were united, or even that it existed in the first place. “Evacuate them now and take Luna Eclipse with you. The Warriors from my pack, and from Leon’s should be more than enough to stop them. There is only one road in or out to this pack. So, chances are this is the only way they’ll be able to get to the village.” I stated.
“None of them need to know why. It will only complicate things.” Said Derrick, and he was right as well. I didn’t want my babygirl to worry about me, and if I died, at least my Luna would be safe, and Connor could be Alpha.
“Me and delta will hold the old pack border line, in case they try to slink in from the back running trails.” Said Shelly.
“Fine but be careful.” I grunted.
Connor was to be with my Luna, and Derrick was to be in the middle of the lands in case they discovered there were more of us. I was to be at the packhouse with the elite warriors and with Alpha Leon’s pack. I didn’t want him to get involved, because there is always a risk in losing, and I didn’t want us both to die for my poor planning.
It struck me like a hammer that I would be without my mate because of these fuckers. I won’t have her touch, her smell, and I will be alone again. What if she thinks that I am leaving her after we were intimate. What if she hates me, being broken hearted when I return? I mated her so passionately, only to leave her for duties I could not leave unattended…. But by doing so she was. Leaving now so soon will feel like rejection since the bond has just been finalized… She cannot stay here, so I guess I would have to deal with that when the time comes…...
Everything was set, and by noon the town was empty. And my heart ached.
