Chapter 61
Kaiden
Rakaam was at the front of my mind while I drove, and I thanked the gods that all I had to do was move in a straight line. Babygirl was completely unaware of what the fuck was happening, and she looked peaceful, half asleep staring out the window. Tasting our true power and rage again had made Rakaam drunk, and my wolf beat my head like a gods damned drum. Being there had driven him mad. Honestly, I felt the effects as well, but I had more composure. The power that lay within us, was repressed until now, and I was not about to let him have it… especially while on the fucking road.
We are strong enough, I told him firmly. It was only 2:45, but I had been driving for 7 hours now, and I couldn’t pull over even to piss with him like this. I was going to stop by councilman Jang’s packhouse to rest and to kick his ass, but we couldn’t that Rakaam was being and idiot. I pushed him into the back of my mind, and he banged at the forefront of it, not caring that I was doing at least 110 on the highway.
/We should accept who we are, if only to protect our mate. How many times will she be hurt before you accept it? We must show our enemies the power of our lineage. I will not be submitted again./ He argued.
He was right, but if I gave in, there was no way in hell I could control him and his impulses. I had, for a moment, became my truest self, and she saw. She was the only thing that helped me contain myself. I did it for her.
/ No./ I tell him. /She will not accept how violent we’ll become!/ I scream at him.
/Our mate would never leave us!/ He snarled, and we fought.
I punched him in the snout, and he fucking bit me on the leg. I had never been bit by my own wolf in my mind, and I had never had to strike him. My actual leg began to bleed through my dark jeans, making the small car fill with the smell of my blood. This alerted Eclipse, who had no idea what was happening. I didn’t either, but so help me I am finishing it. We wrestled for dominance, and we were evenly matched. The Lady never intended this to ever happen, yet here we were, blaspheming her laws again.
I mentally grabbed him by the scruff and put him in a large dog cage. It was just the first thing that came to mind, though this cage held thick prison bars like in Horizon than the thin wire you’d buy at the store. He rammed it repeatedly, and bit the bars, unable to open it without hands.
/Look./ I told him. /We are stuck together, even in death dumbass. What would you even do with that power? Hmm?/
/Destroy you./ He growled with venom.
He didn’t mean it, but just in case, I kept him within myself, locked away, just as I did our power so he could clear his head. He didn’t need it. I didn’t need it. I would try to live this life my own way. There was no need for this power since I was never intending to rule as prince.
“…Alpha, are you ok?!” Screamed Eclipse, she put her hand on my leg, it had already healed, but the blood was still there as proof of something I could not deny. I wondered could she see it in my eyes that something was wrong, but I didn’t have the time to figure that out. I had to maintain control of the car while keeping my wolf in check. My hope was that she’d never know how hard that was to do.
“Don’t worry about it.” I grunted. It was unnaturally tender there now, but she would never know that. “It’s already healed, don’t worry babygirl.” I half lie. She nodded. The ride was silent for about an hour after that. Rakaam seemed to calm down, and I contemplated letting him out; he looked miserable.
I looked around to avoid the awkward we had created for ourselves, and saw an ad for something interesting. Off exit 15-C was something that I had meant to take her to. The SapphireMoon territory was hosting a Fall Fest. For it to be a billboard, it meant that they were allowing anyone to come. I wondered why that was, especially since it brought humans to the territory…. I had seen Alpha Philip at council meetings before, but it was for disputes and the like. He wasn’t on the regional council officially mind you, just an advisor.
I returned my attention back to the date I was planning with babygirl. It looked like they rented real rides on their pack territory. They had venues and games, along with a small roller coaster in the billboard that I saw. She would love it, but I needed to talk to Rakaam first.
/Listen./ I shot daggers at my wolf. He had his back to me, and I could still feel his unstable nature. /We have a shot at spending real time with babygirl right now… IF. You. Behave. You wanna hold her, right?/
/More than anything./ His red eyes twinkled like I was giving a kid candy.
/IF you behave, we can spend time with her. If I can’t trust you, I will keep driving, do we have a deal?/
/On my honor I will not harm a soul…for now./ He growled. I let him out and he licked my face. I petted his fur, and we had an unspoken truce. We are the Alpha; apologies weren’t happening.
Satisfied, I got off the highway without telling Eclipse where we were going. Fall and Lunar fests were always great. Booze, rides, bonfires, and this time, I might actually have fun, instead of hosting one bored out of my mind. She sat up in her chair high, and if her tail was out, it would be wagging when she saw the big sign next to pumpkins.
“My Lady really?! Yes! Thank you Kaiden!” she squealed and bounced in her seat.
/I would do anything for our little mate./ Purred Rakaam, making us agree on something for once. She turned around and kissed me on the cheek, and my chest swelled with pride that I had found something to make her little body so giddy. She was worth the risk, and Rakaam reverted to his normal state, to keep his promise.
I could barely pay for parking, because she exploded out the car before I could open the door for her like I usually do. She ran around my side of the car and dragged me to the food carts. I got in line with her, and bought some corndogs and funnel cake. The grease will get me later, but it was worth seeing her happy. There were so many wolves here, it made me question if the entire town we passed on the highway were part of his pack. There were so many humans there as well, enjoying the festivities, and holding hands with their partners.
I noticed the smell of shifted wolf in the air, and my eyes went wide. The humans and wolves were around each other, in whatever form. Never in my life had I seen anything like it. In the lives we live, they were to be secret. They were to be kept under wraps, lest it start another war with headhunters.
What was he thinking?! I’d made it up in my mind that I’d give him a piece of it. All it takes in this day and age is a camera snap or internet livestream.
I smelled for the scent of Alpha Phillip; basically, I was looking for the strongest smelling wolf. I got a strong scent of juniper, and began to follow it. The damage had already been done, so there was no need to contact the council, not that I would anyway. It would mean more paperwork, and more time spent probably hauling my ass back to my grandfather before the High Council again. I also still had to play calm and collected for babygirl, I didn’t want to scare her, especially since we had already had… bad experiences with humans.
“Isn’t that against the law or something?” she said with scrunched eyebrows at seeing a small gray wolf being petted by a human. There went that plan, I thought to myself. She was quick as a whip.
“Yes,” I say flatly, seeing my target. Rakaam was cautious, but held to his word. I almost questioned why he was not being an ass, but we were enjoying our mate tonight. /Hell or high water, let the shit fly another time/, I thought to myself. I heard him growl in agreement.
