Chapter 23

Eclipse
I looked at him fall asleep unable to continue, but I legitimately craved him. When he told me he loved me, my soul created its own sun. The bond may make us yearn for the other… but love was separate. It was something earned, along with trust. I’d felt it for him… but with it returned, it was as if I was whole, so complete. Almost as if they were magic words, and he was the adventurer that discovered it.
But now I worried. I stroked his head, feeling how hot he was, but he wasn’t sweating. He was breathing fine, and all his other vitals seemed normal… but he had to have a raging fever to be this hot… I put my hand to my forehead for comparison, and Gamma patted my back. She linked someone, and without saying anything she was trying to reassure me that it was going to be ok.
There was a knock on the door. She must have summoned the medical staff.
“Luna, he needs one more injection.” Said a male nurse coming in.
“Go ahead.” I nodded.
“What was his temperature?” Asked Gamma Branson, and he hesitated. “Speak up then.”
“40.6C ma’am.” He said quietly. That was much too high…. It should have been 38.6. Our temperature was higher than humans, but he had a fever if it was That high.
“If anything changes, keep me posted.” She said dismissing him.
“Shouldn’t they get his fever down before he’s released?” I asked concerned, and she looked at me with a smile.
“That’s always been his natural temperature.” She said as if it were common knowledge.
“Don’t worry about Kaiden.” Said Beta Connor. “He’ll wake up damn near good as new, especially since he has you.” He smiled.
“But it’s so high….” I said looking at him rest peacefully. You almost would think that nothing had happened to him.
“He’s right. Let’s leave them be for the time being.” Said Gamma Branson, leaving with Beta.
They gave him one more injection and he slept until noon. Rakaam was the one that woke up, still mad it seemed. His red eyes almost had a glow again to them. “Little mate, I am getting up.” He said flatly. I moved over in my chair by his bed. He sat up; the staff started to notice that he was standing. He pushed the button to call the nurse and she came right in. “Release me from these machines.” He commanded. She stuck her head in the door and the doctor came in with that female nurse.
“Alpha your prognosis is good, but I must implore you to rest.” He said sternly. “I don’t know how they got you pumped with so much silver so quickly, but this injection seemed a bit different from the ones that I’ve seen before.”
“How so?” He asked.
“There were finer particles in your blood than the dialysis machine could take, and I believe that they may have figured out how to refine it smaller. You are silver free in tests though. I’ll leave you with the nurse; I gave her your discharge paperwork.”
“What of the she human?” He growled.
“At Horizon.” He said bowing his head.
“Good.” He said with a smaller, more pleased growl.
“I would like to give you one more injection of blessed saline water before you go, to make sure there is no more silver, Alpha.” He said, being handed a syringe of the nearly glowing blue liquid.
He was about to refuse, but then he looked at me, and held out his arm. He didn’t flinch, honestly that needle was huge, but Alpha’s wolf seems to have a high tolerance for pain. “I have fought as Alpha for 203 years, little mate. This is nothing.” He said plainly, hearing my thoughts.
“What? But you’re 218 years old?” I said confused.
“Father and mother died because humans are cruel. They were poisoned at a treaty meeting with humans in Bison. I have reigned ever since. Challengers came, because I was a pup, yet I defeated them all.” He said proudly.
Beta had brought us some fresh clothes, but his wolf didn’t care about such things, all he wanted was to get to the packhouse. He walked slowly, showing no pain in his posture. A warrior had gotten a car to escort us home but as soon as he saw it, he growled in protest, but got in when he saw me get in the backseat.
He walked slowly upstairs to our room, not really saying anything. He nodded to everyone that greeted us, but when we got to the top of the stairs, he closed the door. I didn’t even know there was a sliding door to his side of the house. He locked it, and walked to the bedroom, laying his back on the bed. I got him a glass of water and some cookies from the kitchen. The sugar would pep him up I thought.
“I don’t eat baked goods, little mate.” he said, drinking the water.
I went back downstairs, wondering what he would want. It seemed to be a shift change happening, as everyone looked so busy. In the kitchen area, there were a few Warriors making their meals, using the microwave, and were in general, on break. I stood next to a woman, who was a least a foot taller than me. They didn’t see me, and I didn’t draw any attention to myself, but it was only because I hadn’t yet. I debated with Shimmer on this, because she felt as Luna, butting in was our right.
“Alpha’s car is damn near totaled, but it got towed this morning.” Said the taller she wolf with gray hair.
“The mechanic’ll fix it. I already put their stuff in their room, Beta’s orders.” Said the she wolf with brown hair, but the same green eyes. Hers flashed blue.
“Do you smell that?” Asked the she wolf she was talking to. Hers also flashed blue with her wolf, and I assumed they were possibly sisters.
Then she sniffed the air, and the hair stood on the back of her neck. “My Luna, forgive me” she stuttered.
“It’s ok, what does Rakaam eat?” I asked curiously. At first, she was confused, then she realized I meant Kaiden’s wolf and looked like she was thinking.
“As far as I’ve ever seen, humans and wild game, but there’s raw beef in the fridge.” She said cheerfully, rubbing the back of her neck. I could smell her fear, probably thinking about how Alpha’s wolf had to have been out if I asked that. Shimmer wished we could read minds like Alpha, however he could only do that with me since we were mates.
“Thank you.” I smiled and got a big piece of raw beef on a plate.
“Sorry for not seeing you.” she said sheepishly. She was submitting with the other Warrior, which made Shimmer happy.
“It was an accident, you’re fine.” I said to reassure her and went upstairs. I could only assume that he didn’t like it cooked. He was a wolf… and wolves eat raw meat all the time, though now that I thought of it… I should have at least warmed it.
I also realized that even though his wolf was in control, he was still unshifted. I hadn’t really seen that before since I hung out with other Omegas in school. I’d never had even the desire to eat raw, and I wondered would it upset his stomach when Rakaam stopped healing them.
He seemed to be almost meditating, so I put the plate on his lap. He doesn’t make face expressions much, most wolves don’t because they usually live in our mind and only truly come out in rare instances.
“Thank you, little mate” he stated calmly.
He just grabbed it with his hands and started eating. He bit straight through the bone, munching it too, while I’d never seen that before either. My food had always been cooked, though just like with his temperature, I could only assume he was different because he was an Alpha with a large wolf. Honestly, it was strange to see him eat like this. Well…. anyone really. I went to the bathroom to get a washcloth for him, since he made a mess. It was gone by the time I got back. He thanked me again and returned to his staring at the wall.
“You do not have to stay little mate, it may take me yet longer to heal.” he said, saddened by the thought of being alone. I could feel it.
/Don’t tell her that dumbass/, I heard Alpha. I was hearing his thoughts, their innermost thoughts. I had to mentally take Shimmer by the mouth because she was going to mess it up!
/What would you have her do, stay here in silence, watching us heal?/ He growled.
/Ugh tell her to get my laptop, the password is Daddio23./ He said confidently.
/….That is stupid./ He said annoyed.
/Yeah well. I’ve had that password since the ‘90’s./ He grumbled.
I audibly sighed at the corniness and turned on Nightflix. “It seems I should be more careful now.” his wolf said proud and amused.
We watched A.c.q.u.a.i.n.t.a.n.c.e.s. reruns in bed together; he had never seen this show, so I got to enjoy letting him be completely confused by Fiona singing Stinky Kitten. But for the most part, he was confused, but quiet.
