Book 2 Chapter 18
Heidi
I quietly sipped tea while we all sat in the living room. “So, what is the assessment like?” I asked while Beta Isaac popped open a can of soda. He sat on the couch, and turned on the news.
“Well for you, we need to see if you have any natural talent, because your transcripts show you’ve had no Luna training. At least nothing beyond the computer system.” He said casually, and I looked down. I was already not meeting up to the expectations of anyone.
“Heidi, that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, because we both get to learn together.” Said John, who put his hand on the small of my back, rubbing it in little circles.
“He’s right. Not having Luna training isn’t going to be the problem. The problem is your timid nature. I don’t want some high borne giving you a hard time. They will if they think they can get away with it.” He said casually, and bit into a sandwich that he’d made earlier.
“I will protect her.” John growled, standing up. Beta chuckled.
“I don’t doubt that, but you also seem to be too easy going and lenient. A wolf will take advantage of that second chance, and you’ll regret it if you let it happen too much. Soft Alphas get stepped on or overthrown.” He warned, and John looked out the window. I knew what he was referring too. The human, his adopted parents…. Jesse. It made him look bad as a leader to let them have mercy, but I knew my mate. He had a good heart…. He wouldn’t have changed his decisions.
“I understand that, but my choices are final.” He said stubbornly, crossing his arms.
“Very well. I’m not here to tell you to change your decisions, but you should both think about what I said.” He finished his food, and threw away his garbage. We shook hands and he left.
It had gotten late, and John undressed in our room, while I did in the other bathroom. It was for the best, since neither of our wolves wanted us to take our hands off each other. I got into some black shorts and a tank, while John was in just pajama pants….
“My Lady.” He said looking at me all over…. He slowly walked to me, and kissed me softly before taking my hand, leading me to the bedroom. It left soft tingles where our lips met, and it was all I could think about until we got inside. I would be in bed with my mate. I didn’t say anything because I didn’t know what to tell him. He was handsome, and the way he looked at me made me feel special… I rested my head on his chest, and closed my eyes. I felt safe with him, but I knew I would get no sleep.
John held me dozing off easily, but I pretty much watched the sun rise. I had gotten no rest. None. Not even a wink, worried about what the elders of this pack would think of me. Here I wasn’t protected like in dad’s pack… here there were new wolves, who probably already didn’t like me. I was not one of them. I wasn’t high born… I wasn’t even a wolf by their standards.
We are good enough for our mate. Go to sleep. Commanded Sparkle. She was pissed that I kept her up, but I couldn’t help it! I’m a worry wort.
“Good morning little mate. The sun isn’t even up. Go to bed. I will have them schedule the test for this afternoon.” Yawned John, rolling out of bed.
I was about to get up, but he gently pressed me back down. “I’m rested.” I lied, and he kissed me on the forehead.
“Mmhmm. Sleep Heidi, I’ll figure it out.” He told me truthfully, and Sparkle agreed with him. She forced me to sleep! It wasn’t hard to do, seeing as how I freaked out nearly all night about impressing the elders, but realistically, there was nothing I could do short of being an ancient blooded Charred One that would probably satisfy them.
-----John-----
“I’ll have Gamma watch the house while you are assessed. This actually works out, as you two will be free of each other’s influence.” Said my father, and I shook my head. I should have figured that he would pull this. He was an Alpha, as down to earth as he was.
“I’ll be there when Gamma gets here then.” I said casually, and there was a knock on the door. It was my adopted parents.
“We’ve settled sir.” Said my father stoically. “We’re next door if you need us, we’ll keep an eye out for Heidi.” He said with a nod, and I wondered how the fuck did he know all this before I told him anything. Then I remembered they were spies by trade…
“Where’s my sis-Jesse?” I asked, not smelling her scent on them. Actually, they didn’t have scents..
“She’s in the house sleeping, glum that her first day in the packhouse starts at 8.” He chuckled.
“I thought you guys served me?” I asked and he smiled.
“We do, but you have to have clean clothes, food delivered to the house, your home, as well as your room in the packhouse needs to be dusted, not to mention take care of your pet human.” He said, saying a bunch of other chores that it blew my mind. I always did my own laundry…. Or mom did if I practically begged her too.
“Ann is an Omega, not a pet… also, if it’s too much, Jesse can take off. I understand she has to serve pack duties, but she was a Gamma’s daughter her entire life until now. Thank you for all you do mom and dad, I mean, Mr. and Mrs. Robins.” I corrected myself fast, because I didn’t want anyone to hear, thinking they would get special treatment.
I decided since it was so close, that I would walk to the packhouse. I got bows of respect, as well as a bunch of free stuff. Wolves wished me well, though they had no idea of any assessments. They were just friendly.
I stopped into the 1950’s styled coffee shop. It was the last place on the strip of window shops, with a large corner window and checkered tile floor. It was at least twice the size of Crimson’s, and it was packed. Warriors were eating, along with a few regular wolves. I got some black tea while the sun was still rising. It was early dawn, and many of the warriors that were out were about to change shifts. “Good morning your highness!” Said a girl about 13 or 14 in Lapis Café. She was the shop keeper’s child by the looks of it, and I gave her a gentle smile. I didn’t really know how to be a dignitary, but I wouldn’t be rude.
“Good morning; name’s John.” I told her, looking out the window. I glanced her way, shaking my head. She reminded me of my sister, though she was taller. She also had white and black hair…. I could practically hear her zip around, frantically cleaning.
“I’m Rita Fritz, I’ve never had a member of the royal family come down here. Thank you for your service, your highness!” She chirped, bouncing to me, offering me cream. I denied. I just wanted a little silence, but this made me smile.
“Rita, leave his highness alone, he’s very busy!” Chastised her mother, who took her away with a bow.
“Don’t get too mad at her, she’s just hyper, and probably nervous too.” I said, patting her on the head. She was probably excited too that she had something to brag about to her friends when summer was over. Remove your hands from that she wolf. Growled Terracotta. She will think we have no mate. I internally sighed. I literally held her like a body pillow, only a human wouldn’t smell her on me. Or a she wolf in denial. He growled. He was right.
The girl bowed, and I forgot to remove my hand from her like an idiot. She thought she was going to be punished, especially since my eyes flashed to the unnatural whisky of my wolf. I was well aware the color did not exist in other wolves, as this was because of a blessing from the Lady Moon. “She’s a good pup, your grace.” Said her father.
“Oh, don’t worry, my wolf just wanted me to remove my hand.” I chuckled, and they relaxed. Wolves here were cautious of me because of who I was, but they didn’t know that I wasn’t aggressive.
I walked down the sidewalk to the beautiful, but old style packhouse with glass and wood double doors. It reminded me almost of a home in a fairy tale, though I assume, then it would be smaller? How big were fairies? The white colonial house was at least 5 or 6 stories tall, so there was in fact room if I wanted to live there, but I would rather not.
I would rather be on my own with my mate so she could adjust, as she didn’t care about ‘how much of an honor it would be.’ The only good side to living on my own floor would be that my parents and Ann could come with me, though our arrangements were fine. We had two houses, and we were neighbors. The other neighbor I hadn’t met yet, but I heard he was a warrior for the day shift.
