Chapter 52
Kaiden
I was given the cold shoulder all yesterday, as she took her time fixing her novels. I felt bad, and I should have explained, but then there would be no point. She needs to be stronger before I introduce her to the council. They had already questioned why she had not come with me, and warned me they would give me a deadline. It isn’t that they would reject her, but if she was challenged formally by a former Luna there, she might have to accept if the council deems her incompetent to lead… something entirely possible, because she still didn’t know the basics of her title. I taught her the way I was, as straight forward and bluntly as possible, but I wondered had I done enough?
/The council knows better than to try something so stupid./ Growled Rakaam. He was right, but I didn’t trust them.
I went for a run in human form to clear my head. I was barefoot on the dirt trail in just jogging shorts, running full speed. I literally did this for my Luna, and she was still a little mad at me. She will be even more so in the coming days, but while I was out, I would try to relax.
It was calming to see the rest of the pack doing their duties, running on the trails, or even just talking with each other. It was tranquil, and the smell and sounds of the forest gave me a chance to think. I would only have a short window to teach her everything I should have Already taught her… that was my fault, but at the same time she wasn’t ready. She still fears everything to do with me…. though not as much as when we met to be fair.
I came home after 2 hours and went upstairs to my office. She had gone to her parents’ house with 3 warriors and their pups. It was her mother’s birthday, so I left her alone. She was happy, I could feel it through our bond, and I didn’t want to ruin it for her. And then I smelled what Shimmer had done.
Her scent was everywhere on her side of the office. She had claimed it as hers and it drove me crazy. She had rubbed her body on the leather chair, the desk, the bookshelf, and the laptop. It drove my wolf wild; he thought it was hot. I found myself walking to her chair, digging my claws into it, and smelling the top of it like an idiot. She had claimed this side of the room as hers, so at least she took my lesson to heart.
“Ah-hem” said Beta Connor with a smirk and a raised eyebrow.
“Don’t you know how to knock?” I growled at him.
“But then how would I see you behaving naturally in your habitat?” he said completely amused.
“What did you even come in here for?” I demand, now at my desk, trying to control Rakaam and myself from going nuts in this room.
“Well,” he leaned on my desk, “The police called while you were on your run and arrested the last 8 headhunters, shut down their club, and now Bison City is officially hunter free. They will transfer them here tomorrow.” I raised an eyebrow. This was good news, but Beta didn’t seem like he was finished so I remained silent.
His face became serious, which is rare with him. He was quiet for a while, debating on telling me whatever it was that was on his mind.
I grunted for him to hurry up.
He looked at the door as if someone would snoop, and he leaned in low. “Also, the Charred One will attend your Luna introduction ceremony this new moon.” he said lowly, as if anyone would hear. “The Head Councilman called right after you left. He will deem if she is a worthy Luna.” He whispered, then ran walked out the room.
I was shocked. The King had not been seen in almost a century, then all of a sudden, he appears. He becomes active, he also has started killing Headhunters in raids and forcing Rogues to find packs or be returned to their original ones for punishment. And now he summons me. Shit.
I was the oldest living male of his blood, so maybe he was interested in what I was doing, or to see if my life met his standards. Either way, I mind linked Eclipse to come home soon, so that we could talk. This was more important than she could know. More important than I would tell her so she wouldn’t worry.
And I have 5 days left.
-----Eclipse-----
I was having a good time at my mom’s party. She turned 500 this year, but she doesn’t look a day over 40. I got her a nice purse, it was expensive, and I knew she would love it. We had cake, sang, and the warrior’s pups played with the neighbors. The party was small but lively with the pups around, since we had no living family left. The only other people that came were close family friends that they made here in this pack. Everyone they knew and loved besides me were killed by hunters in their home pack, and that that almost happened here brought stress to many. Thankfully we kept our minds off such things with little distractions here and there like this.
“I’m so glad you could make it.” Said my mom with a smile. She hugged me tightly, and Shimmer wagged her tail.
“Mom I wouldn’t miss this for the world.” I said hugging her back.
Dad came with ice cream and cake. “Come over here honey!” He beamed happily. She still had one last present to open, and it was from dad.
She went over and he’d gotten her a nice tennis bracelet. It was delicate and the stones made a rainbow with the many kinds of topaz in the gold. “It’s wonderful.” She hugged, getting awes from everyone else.
They kissed, and I went outside a second, only to get a link from Kaiden.
I had to go home, because Alpha had asked me. I didn’t mind, because it was starting to get late anyway, but I was also a little worried since he sounded almost panicked.
“Luna is there something wrong?” Asked Warrior Marshall, one of the men that escorted me. There were three in total, but the third warrior was on the roof like a lookout.
“I need to get home.” I said and he nodded with a hum.
“Take your time and tell your family. I will collect the pups.” He said whistling loudly as I looked for mom. She was pretty much cuddling dad inside.
“I can tell by the look on your face that you need to go.” Said mom.
“I’ll call you later.” I said getting motioned by them both to lean in closer. I gave them one last hug goodbye, and I was grateful that they weren’t upset.
“You’re the Luna sweetie; go be with your mate.” Said mom happily.
“I know but-” I was cut off by dad.
“But nothing; that you came is an honor.” He said kissing me on top of the head. “Now go; I half imagine it has to be important.” I was essentially shooed away after that, but I didn’t mind. They wanted their time together to probably be with each other now.
“We’re ready Luna.” Said Warrior Maten with a bow. He was the other enormous warrior that came with us, and both were cousins, sharing the same silver hair and dark blue eyes. The third Warrior that was on the roof brought no one, but he’d already scouted ahead. I don’t think he had a mate yet, but he said nothing to anyone the entire time he was with us.
“Maggie said that there’s a Rogue on the northern border.” Said Warrior Maten.
“Link her to be safe. The last thing we need is her or Frannie hurt.” Said Warrior Marshall. Both their mates were patrol Warriors. Their mates were out today while they were off duty with their pups. Both Warriors had 2 pups apiece. All 4 boys looked like their fathers, except the youngest boy who had green eyes instead.
/The perimeter is secure. / Linked the third one, Warrior Jasper. It was the only thing he’d said the entire time.
He was linked back by the other Warriors, while I silently enjoyed the sunset walk through town. It was peaceful. Time also seemed to go faster the closer we got to the packhouse… I was almost there with the Warriors escorting me. The outskirts of the housing district turned into shops, and the next thing I knew I was home… I’d managed to get Alpha some cake, and went up the stairs once I got home. He wasn’t in the bedroom, so I went into the office. He was there, stern faced but smiling once he noticed me. I set it on his desk, and he patted his lap for me to sit. His face looked serious.
He looked me in the eyes, debating on something. I could see it in his face. He motioned for me to come to him, and he put me in his strong hold. Putting me in his lap, I sat there. I tidied up some of his stacks of paperwork in the silence. He looked like he was almost done, as some of the things were being faxed to wherever they were meant to go. The room was silent if not for the sounds of paper.
“Babygirl, what do you know of the council, and the Wolf King’s Court?” he questioned seriously.
“I thought the King was just a story until a few days ago, but I learned in school that the Council was full of Alphas, and Ex Alphas as advisors.” I said honestly. He pulled me close and seemed to be agitated, I could feel it off him.
“The Wolf King’s very real, babygirl. Though, no one sees him often. He is my grandfather. I am the oldest living male in his line. I only met the man a few times, and he is only the wolf. He wants to see you, as well as the council…. This is the first time in a long time that I don’t know what the fuck to do.” He leaned down and smelled my scent, holding me closer to him.
…. That explained a lot, but for his sake I would wait to ask questions. He smelled stressed as if I would reject him…
I placed my hand under his strong jaw, and rubbed the side of his face. His eyes met mine, they danced between yellow and red, but I could see there was a deep sadness and concern there. “It’ll be ok Kaiden.” I say softly, and he kissed me desperately. His deep embrace held me like a blanket as if he worried he’d never see me again. I kissed him back, wrapping my arms around him.
“I don’t want to lose you.” He said so quietly that I almost didn’t hear him. I smelled him deeply; I knew all the pain and concern he held in his body. It was for me, and I was unsure what to tell him. I had grown to love this man, and here he was so unsure. I had never seen him like this, and I hugged him as tightly as I could. I kissed him gently on the lips, rubbing my hand on the side of his face.
“You won’t.” I whisper in his ear. We sat there in that moment for a while.
We made our way back to our room, and we cuddled. He needed me to be there for him, and I didn’t let him go.
