Book 2 Chapter 54

Heidi
When we pulled up, there was a very nice rental car, along with an additional car in our driveway. Inside, grandma had a seat with a large cup of tea, and I could tell she was still fuming, but when she saw me, she ran to me.
She was so much bigger than me I felt like I was a small pup while she hugged me, growling softly, that turned into a small whine. “My little one… please don’t ever let someone treat you this way ever again…. Your stubborn grandfather left on an earlier flight.” She shot the door a glare, but I wouldn’t have expected anything less.
“Grandma, you didn’t have to come all this way though.” I said still being squished.
“Nonsense, I am here to witness John and Aikesh spar.” Said grandma who now held me tightly as if I would run away.
“Of course, your highness.” He said with a bow, but she put her hand on top of his head.
“I know you have not forgotten; you don’t have to be so formal with me.” she whispered, and he smiled, rising.
“Then grandma, I would like to retire for the night.” He said with a small smile, and she ruffled his hair.
“Very well, but I wish to speak with my grandpup.” She said shooing him into his room. She closed the bedroom door, and motioned for me to sit.
“Grandma I can explain.” I whispered, but she sat next to me, and stroked my hair.
“I’ve known about that…. Terrible pup for years… even before you were adopted. Yet… I cannot help but be upset that you never once called me… do you not trust me?” She asked quietly, hugging me to her chest. Her heart was beating so fast, and her eyes were black with her wolf. She was the only wolf I’d ever known to have that color…
“I… I didn’t want to disappoint you… you always encouraged me to be strong.” I mumbled.
“You’ve never disappointed me, and you Are strong, stronger than any wolf or witch I know…. how else could you have come this far?” She said quietly, and I wasn’t as sure as her... “You all are my most precious pups. You, my pup’s pups, and their pups… their mates too. If you ever need me, please call me…. I will be angry but not at you…” She kissed me on the top of the head and I felt her anger. She was upset, and I saw a flash of what she’d done.
Her hands glowed a golden white while she strangled Jesse’s body…. She really did bring her back, but from what I knew of grandma, it was temporary, because she couldn’t heal what was wrong with the body… When I opened my eyes, I saw she was looking at me with a soft growl.
“You didn’t have to do that…” I mumbled quietly, but Rahrraam bit my hand. Thankfully, it was not enough to draw blood.
She did. If I were not stuck this way, I would have done it myself. He squeaked angrily, but grandma spoke something in wolf, and my rat jumped out my pocket on the table. The language he squeaked was demonic, but it seemed they understood each other.
“He is very polite.” She said patting him between the ears. She looked like she linked someone, and the living room door opened.
Garnet came in holding Ann’s hand, and setting her at the table. There was another Shadow with him, though he held one black eye, and one green. He handed my rat a piece of ham out the fridge. He nibbled silently, but I know this wasn’t why my grandma came. She wasn’t one to come all this way for revenge and sparring.
-----John-----
I never expected the Queen to be so comfortable in one of the guest rooms. I figured at the very least, she would be in the packhouse with my father, but she was already asleep. Heidi too turned in for the night, but I wasn’t able to really rest. I was nervous.
I knew Aikesh wouldn’t be here at the very least until next week, and my brother in Heidi’s visions made no progress… but I still wanted to do something that I said I wouldn’t. It would be bad to go out, but I put on a hoodie and opened the door. I immediately crashed into the Shadow whose name I didn’t catch.
“Do you need anything Sir?” He asked, while Garnet seemed to materialize out of nowhere.
“No, I was just getting air, also I didn’t catch you’re name.” I said shaking his wrist. He looked like he didn’t quite get what I was doing.
“Emerald Sir.” He said sternly.
“He’s from the royal court John, you won’t get much out of him.” Chuckled Garnet. He looked at Garnet as if he’d committed a crime.
“Well… in any case I wasn’t going any farther than the backyard seeing as how everyone else is sleeping.” I said dismissively, but Emerald looked confused.
“Will you not reprimand him for addressing you so casually, your highness?” He asked, and I shook my head.
“You don’t have to call me that, John’s fine.” I told him walking to the tree I turned to sand. There were still big chunks of it to destroy, and I didn’t feel bad about it since it was already dying when I first started.
“Would you rather spar with us?” Suggested Garnet, and I raised an eyebrow…. Him sure, but I wasn’t so confident about the new guy… he seemed too formal.
“That would be fun.” Said Emerald, and his eyes flashed the same purplish red Garnet’s did. I knew I shouldn’t have but it wouldn’t hurt…
“Alright then…” I said reluctantly. “But we need to take turns to watch the houses.” I said sternly.
“Do you intend to fight all thirteen of us sir?” Emerald asked scratching his chin, and I blinked twice. There was no one out there but us three. Where were the other ten?!
“No? But for the sake of continued protection, I think it would be best if I still had no idea where they were in case someone was looking for them too.” I thought out loud.
“Very well then.” Said Garnet, taking the first swing. He was fucking fast. Dodging him was mandatory, because his clawed hands made an auditory swoosh.
Emerald was no better, but I couldn’t really read him. Pack life and familiarity had made Garnet less likely to actually kill me, but this guy acted like he honestly wanted to take me by the throat and claw it out. I countered their clawed swipes with closed fisted punches, getting Garnet in the gut. He held his side, tapping out, but being replaced by another Shadow. This one had a green and blue eye combination, half shifting only partly, so he could bite at me.
“Wait wait wait!” I yelled making a time out T with my clawed hands. “Teach me that!” I panted, getting laughs from the trees.
“If Alpha wants to know some shadow skills, let’s teach him.” Chuckled Garnet, rubbing the welt on his side. Nothing was broken, but I felt a little guilty for it.
“It isn’t hard. The hard part is trying that shit as a moonborn.” Said Garnet.
“Moonborn?” I asked, still panting. Their blows were light, but they were all incredibly fast, and I was starting to finally feel sore.
“Nearly every wolf ever born was born under the love and protection of the Lady. We didn’t get that. We are wolves, born in darkness, without blessing. Some of us were taken out early, like Emerald, but those with a brown eye and a blue eye like me were born naturally. We trained, with our wolves as our only ally. Your bond with your wolf is fine enough, but if you don’t really trust him, you’ll die.” He said with a smirk. “It’ll be because your entire life, you trained to shift quickly, but we train slowly, sometimes taking a full day to shift, studying each aspect of the body.”
The wolf who half shifted looked a little sick, but stood as a warrior. “Your grace, I would like to add that this can only really be done once every few days… it’s best not to try and overdo it.”
“Well… I would still like to try.” I told him, hearing details from all of them. It was something
“Then we’ll start by teaching you how to slow shift. It won’t take long, but it’s going to hurt.” Said Xavier, holding an urn. I didn’t notice that he’d even been around me…. he also had to have had in contacts my entire life, because his eyes were miss matched. One was obsidian, while the other was red. Now that I thought of it… I couldn’t remember my adopted father’s eye color.
“By Alpha Zanther’s orders, we were told to call you Betrayer.” Said Emerald, and Xavier laughed. He had his eyes closed and everything, as if someone told him a joke.
“Alpha will kill you.” Snarled one.
“How did you get past security?” Snarled one, but Garnet held his hand in the air to stop them.
“Tell Zander that if he means to threaten me, that he should do it to my face.”
