Chapter 30
Eclipse
I woke up on the bed, the sun was up, and Alpha was already gone. I sighed; he could have told me that he was leaving. I would have wanted to go, but I would respect why he wouldn’t want to take me. He was always doing something dangerous when I couldn’t leave, and he didn’t want to see me hurt since I didn’t know how to fight. I could run, but that isn’t much help for what I’d seen him do.
With him gone, there was no reason to be upstairs, so I got ready for the day. I took a long hot shower, changed into some jeans and a t shirt, and made a cup of coffee from the pot he’d already made in his office. It was still hot, and for that I was grateful since I was still sleepy. Alpha’s laptop was also in there on charge.
He never used the thing because he had a desktop, and he was always in his office. The laptop was probably for when he left the pack for a long time, but I knew he would be back by the end of today, so I borrowed it. I wasn’t going to leave the packhouse until he got back either, because I knew better. If that Alpha came back, there was always a chance that he would want to hurt me or kidnap me. I needed to wait until this all calmed down first.
I looked at all the lean, fit warriors making coffee, many of them were males, though there were females almost as tall. It took me a minute to sit on the couch next to one of the large, imposing males and he tossed me the remote. It was the Warrior I’d seen in Alpha’s office, Warrior Sparrow.
“I’m not watching anything. I was just going to get online a bit.” I said trying to give it back to him, but he insisted. He didn’t care that I literally had a laptop sitting on the table
“No Luna; please keep it. I’m just waiting on my mate so he can ride with me on my shift.” He chuckled.
“Where are you going?” I asked passing it back, and he slid it across the table again.
“I patrol the border, Luna. Alpha wants all units either shifted or on ATVs. Fin technically isn’t a Warrior, but my mate is more than capable to rip any Rogue or Crimson wolf a new one since he’s still recovering his body condition. Next month he plans to apply though.” He smiled. He bowed his head to me, as did the other Warriors.
“Thank you for keeping the pack safe. Oh, and congratulations on finding him.” I said leaving well enough alone. He would only give it back. Alpha rules applied to me. Since I was the one picking, I kept it on the original channel. The news rattled on in the background, while I opened Kaiden’s laptop.
He got up, and hugged his mate before bowing to me again. “Don’t thank us; it’s our job to keep our friends and families safe. I’d be lying though if the paycheck wasn’t good too.” He chuckled.
“Don’t forget that we’re deputized to beat the shit out of lowlifes all day too.” Said another. “As a last resort of course.” He grinned.
“Don’t listen to Tony Luna; he’s just messin’ around.” Said Warrior Sparrow, but an off duty Warrior chimed in.
“Only partly though; it can get pretty crazy on my shift.” He said with a small frown. I could tell that he was, as he was in nicer clothes. Since we shift, and our clothes don’t, Warriors tended to put on outfits that they didn’t mind losing.
“Yeah, but that’s rare.” Chimed in another. “We mostly get bums who don’t know there’s a pack in the middle of nowhere, or humans that camp here illegally. You have to go through about 2 miles of ‘Private Property’ signs to get here.” He grumbled, and all of the Warriors more or less grumbled too.
“Leave it to Nelson to bring those fuckers up. I’m going to get calls all day today.” Grumbled Warrior Teddy with folded arms. I remembered him… he was the Warrior that took me home when I was a kid. He was a gray furred wolf who did both Pack, but mostly Border Patrol. He was one of the few that patrolled the spots in between the pack and the forests. He also lived at the edge of the Omega section of the housing district along with his Mate, Warrior Tasha.
“I got one better.” Said Beta Conner coming in.
“Awe Beta No!” Said one.
“He’s going to do it Again!” Complained a female Warrior.
He yawned, looking tired and stretched with a growl to it. “Sure is Quiet today.” He said going upstairs and they all groaned. “Not even a link.” He said grinning wide before turning and going upstairs.
“Beta, you’re going to jinx it!” They all more or less complained while he laughed, and he stopped about midway.
“When anything happens before Alpha gets back, let me know. I’m only taking a nap.” He said completely amused with himself.
Everyone went to their posts after that, as to my understanding, it seemed like they were all waiting to leave in groups. I heard the ATVs starting one by one, then driving off, so I could only assume as much. It would make sense too. With each pair out going different directions, they could cover more ground.
I turned on the laptop afterwards, and got on Nightflix. I put in headphones, and put on Arachnid Lad, for nostalgia’s sake. It was one of my favorite shows growing up, and that they had 6 seasons meant that I could use it to waste a little time.
A Warrior charged with watching the packhouse was nice enough to reheat my coffee for me, and I thanked her. I soon became invisible in the room, and their routine started back as normal, but I was missing Alpha. I could feel his anxiety last night. Honestly, he laughed about the Wolf King and Alpha Crimson, but the feelings he gave off since then were the opposite.
I could understand the worry for Alpha Wade… They were about the same height, meaning their wolves were likely similar size. Their scents were both ridiculously powerful… both held steeled faces of Alphas who ruled without question… but there were differences too. Alpha Kaiden was younger smelling, in better condition when he pulled off his shirt… and there was something I could sense… something that told me that he shouldn’t mess with my mate. It was also the thing that made my wolf so alert… I didn’t know what it was, but it was likely that we were just extremely different strengths.
I was interrupted by feeling watched. I looked up, and it was Matt and a brown-haired girl. That had to be his mate. “May we sit, my Luna” he asked, and I nodded. Before I could say anything, I heard running down the stairs.
“Luna link me if you need me.” Said Beta Connor naked, shifting once he opened the front door for himself. I didn’t even have a chance to tell him ‘Ok’ or anything. I focused my attention back on them.
“Of course.” I said patting the couch, smiling gently. If I did anything to indicate that I didn’t want their company, they would have left.
I looked at their necks and they had marks. My eyes went wide when I caught their scents were mixed together, meaning that she chose to be with her mate, regardless of his condition.…. You need Both parts of the process for the marking to remain… I squealed and hugged them both, happy that he had found someone on the harvest moon, and that I got to meet her. The Lady had sent him someone special.
“I’m so happy for you!” I giggled, and he was frozen, unsure what to do. I had been rooting for him, Shimmer not so much, but I wanted to see him as more than just a broken man.
“Thank you, my Luna… we thought it best to finish the ceremony because of his grandfather.” said the girl. “I’m Delta Robert’s daughter, Hanna.” She said with a bow. They looked cute together, and it meant that he was fully a pack member without question, not that anyone would question Alpha anyway.
“I’m sorry to hear that you rushed it, but please, enjoy yourselves.” I told them happily.
“We’re only going to be here a minute; we have a date planned for later… Dr. Goldman told us the fresh air and shifting would help him.” She said smiling gently at him.
“…. I’ll have to get used to running on three legs, but I heard it’s possible.” He said sheepishly.
“It is.” I said confidently. “It might take a minute, but keep your chin up!” I encouraged, and he looked down in submission, but he also looked honestly persuaded.
They held hands and watched the afternoon news. They sat on the far end of the couch while I caught up on watching Arachnid Lad, the cartoon series…. I hope Alpha doesn’t use search history often. It wasn’t that I was doing anything wrong, but I figured someone as serious as him wouldn’t be interested in this kind of show. I blushed without realizing, completely embarrassed at the teasing that would happen.
I felt a kiss on the top of my head and jumped up, slapping the laptop closed. He laughed at me being embarrassed. “I was watching that too, ya know.” he said fake complaining, sitting next to me.
“Fine but no making out on the couch.” I warned.
“I can’t guarantee that….” he said, coming in to kiss me, and I shoved my hands in his face playfully. Last time he had me a mess. Shimmer was upset with me, but allowed us to continue, because he was so close.
