Book 2: Chapter 74
A/N: Thank you guys so much for waiting I passed my class! My final paper was worth about 30%/ a third my grade, and I have one more week left in this class but my hope is that I can take the summer off and be free, except work.
ALSO THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THE HIGH KING'S BRIDE I SENT AN ERROR REQUEST ALREADY
John
White hot flames melted the snow behind me as I ran from a dragon the size of a damn building. I ran as fast as my paws could go, as I knew if I got caught in his blasts, I’d be cooked. He snarled a deafening roar before landing, but I’d somehow made it to the trees. He could burn them down easily, but even then, he wouldn’t be able to fit in the pine forest.
I didn’t stop running though, because I could smell my brother’s scent. He’d been here at least a week ago, but it was there. I could only assume that it was stronger on this side since Frag’naw. Because nothing gets the blood pumping faster than almost being eaten.
I turned around after following my brother’s scent, winded, but glad for my training. The dragon had stopped pursuing me, which was good, but now I had the problem of setting up camp. I didn’t know what time it was, but I could kind of see that the sun was maybe at the sundown position. The clouds and heavy snow obscured it, which made it hard to tell. I could only go on the fact that I knew it was down before 4, but I didn’t want to run in subzero temperatures, nor run into a fight when I was trying to save my strength for Herrakken.
I dug the snow from under an already fallen log, and dried out the spot with a small fire in front of it. I didn’t have anything really to make it any better, but having my clothes in a pile, and sleeping shifted helped. It was so cold and unforgiving here that I had no choice but to rough it like this. If I slept as a man, I’d probably freeze to death no matter how many coats I had.
I sat in front of the fire, thinking of my mate… I missed her already, but I was glad I did leave like I did. She would have never been able to keep up with me, unless she brought her broom, but then she would’ve been in the air the same time as that damn dragon.
It still roared in the distance. It almost made me wonder did he have a mind. He probably did, but I didn’t want to stick around and find out. Heidi was probably worried by now about me too. I sighed. I looked up at the sky, and its grayness didn’t look like it was going to change any time soon.
I had no food tonight, but it would manage. I had this happen to me plenty of times in training. The fire crackled, and I fell asleep watching the flickers. I woke to embers and a grey sky. It seemed that there was another foot of the white powder that had fell while I was out. I packed up and trudged on. This was going to be a long day’s run, and night too, as this time I didn’t intend to stop.
------Heidi------
It was sunrise when I went to the room, but John wasn’t there. No note, no warning or anything. I growled.
I can flay the boy if you like. Squeaked Rahrraam in my pocket. I was just about to get some sleep too... I knew he was trying to protect me, but I was supposed to help. We’d agreed beforehand that I was supposed to, but Lady damnit, he had no right to decide that on his own! There was no telling what else he got his hands on, and if it was magical, my mate would be in danger.
“Sister, I heard you were upset.” Said Hellinia. I didn’t realize I was that loud.
“John’s gone.” I said still hurt.
“I thought you felt the disturbance in the barrier, but take your broom. It can fly as the wind.” She smiled. “I figured he’d do this though; he only wants to protect you.”
“But who will protect him? We were to do this together.” I said worried about him. “He’s out there and I’m going to find him.”
“Let us help you first.” She offered, and I agreed to it. My nose wasn’t as good as his, and it would help to at least know the direction. Through our bond, I felt no danger, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t hiding it.
We went to her office and inside she had a crystal ball in her closet. She pulled it out with a grunt, and I turned off the lights for her to focus. She didn’t sit in front of it like I thought she would, but instead she lit some candles. “Is there anything you need?” I asked. I’d never done it before, but she seemed like she wanted me to do this instead of her. She came over, putting her hands on my shoulders, leading me to her chair. I was gently placed in it, and she placed my hands on the giant clear crystal ball the size of my head.
“You’re connected to John. If you look into the ball, you will find him faster than I ever could. Think of your soulmate. Think of finding him.” She encouraged.
It glowed a deep red before I saw him being chased by a giant shining dragon. He ran into the tree line, and the ball showed me nothing more. “My Lord Below is he ok?” I yelled, trying to get a better image, but it only glowed red.
“I know where that is. Fly west, and please, avoid Frak’naw, the Mighty One. The dragon you saw, that’s him… He is the bastard son of the Dragon King, as he is the first son. …. “
“Then why isn’t he in a castle? The first sons and daughters of the Kings usually don’t do all this…” I asked getting up. I summoned the broom Leady Tiffany gave me by holding my hand out. It came to me almost as if I’d made it myself.
“He relinquished his rights to his legitimate son.” She said as if it were common knowledge. “Damn you probably wouldn’t know that. He gave his rights to his younger brother because he refused to take a side in the war. He said he wouldn’t be a prince if it meant he would fight his god or his family. I don’t know if you know this, but we and the drakes are of the same mettle. We are true creatures of night, made by its lord, and they the young master.”
“Then I really need to find John.” I said getting up. He’d ran himself into a dragon’s den.
“No you will need to rest. You partook in a ritual that summoned your maker. You don’t feel it now, but if you tried hunting him down, you’ll run out of energy and pass out while flying… or worse, not be able to make the broom go fast enough to dodge the dragon.” She said thinking out loud.
“Then I’ll reason with him.” I said sternly and she laughed.
“You have nothing he could want other than your meat. Above all witch flesh is coveted above all because of its flavor…. But most can’t hurt us because they aren’t immune to our spells. Dragons Are. If he catches you, he Will eat you.” she said sternly, and I had to relent.
“…...Fine. I’m sleeping a few hours tops.” I said giving in.
“What you saw sounded like the future anyway.” she smiled.
You have priority. Grumbled Rahrraam in my pocket. The boy will be fine. He is a full blooded shifter, trained by my brothers, his people, and given his king’s blood.
“I’ll go set an alarm, but when I get up, don’t stop me.” I warned and she hugged me.
“I would not stop you. You perform your duty as his mate. I will keep watch over him, and if he is in danger, I will intervene myself.” She smiled. “I won’t be able to do much so far away, but a twist of luck here and that add up.”
I hugged her. “Thank you.” I squeezed and she squeezed back.
“You’re really strong…. Lord.” She mumbled, and I let go. I’d never been described as that, not physically anyway, but I guess compared to a full blooded witch I was….
“Sorry.” I said sheepishly, and she giggled a bit.
“Never be sorry for who you are, now get some rest. I can fly with you as far as the frozen lake. That was the clearing you saw in your vision.” She smiled. “My guess is that he may be headed to the edge of the forest.” She said as if she were thinking. That too is the dragon’s domain, but underground is a sacred place of the Earth Goddess. It’s called the Spring of Souls. It’s said that that’s the first place the Moon Goddess was discovered by her father. Those that drink the literally bitter water there see visions and confront their proverbial demons. It’s guarded by the Unshifted, and they use it as a place for rites of passage.”
“Holy crap! The Unshifted live there?” I asked somewhat excitedly. She smiled softly.
“Yes, but as far as I know they only speak Shift.” She giggled. “I’m sure your mate won’t have too much trouble, except for the dialect.”
“…. I don’t know if I can sleep with this much information on my mind, but thank you.” I hugged her, and she hugged me patting my head.
“Go little one. Rest. Find your mate, and save both your peoples’ pride.” She smiled.
I went into my room, and surprisingly I did go to sleep the moment I laid down… I didn’t know I was that tired. I didn’t realize that it took energy from me to summon the Horned One like this, but when he had communed with us for a long time, and on top of that we had to summon him here. We also worked a long time on the incantations and food, which took allot of energy. I think that could have been the initial reason why I was so tired too.
