Book 2: Chapter 15
Heidi
His claws were long and curved. They had a reflective shine to it like grandpa’s. She linked him and he nodded. “Ah, I would have been more vicious. Son you have a good head on your shoulders, befitting the title of Earthen One.” He said getting up. None of the wolves got up until Alpha.
The humans on the other hand were disrespectful. They knew of us and our culture, yet chose to try and block his path. He batted them to the side, knocking them over with one flick of his wrist, and motioned his warriors to block them in when we walked. John trailed the warriors in the back with me and Luna, but I knew she was stronger than some of the men on the plane. Her and grandma were the oldest and strongest of all the she wolves. They were also not known for their mercy.
Alpha Ron is the second oldest and strongest wolf alive…. Yet he has never shown his true aura that I know of. He can hide it so well. Sometimes he’s mistaken for an Omega, though, anyone who knows any better won’t be disrespectful, because the wolf would sense something was up.
“Heidi, I’m taking you and mother to the car, and driving home while father takes the humans. Well, except that one” He said to me calmly, pointing to the girl he sat next to. “That one is mine.” He said it somewhat angrily. He smelled enraged, holding consistent whiskey brown eyes of his wolf. I was thankful that Terracotta’s eyes were an extremely rare human color. Well for the wolf it is. Wolf eyes were usually yellows, greys, silver, or even white, but almost never brown. That was something that occurred in hounds.
There was a rental car already waiting for us, and there was a warrior who had a human woman with her. The warrior looked like a giant, and the human was a little taller than me. “Assistant Alpha, I have her.” She said, but her eyes were orange. She faced us so no one else would see, and John nodded.
She sat in the backseat with me while John drove next to his mother. She insisted she wanted to sit in the back, but it was her right to be there, as she was Luna. Also, I wanted them to share some bonding time. I never knew my parents… and I wished desperately that John would bond with his.
“GPS says this is a 3 hour drive, but we aren’t stopping. This baby has a full tank of gas, and I don’t need any drama.” He said with a small smile. The car was a black SUV, like all the others. There had to be at least 20, filled to the brim with Warriors and ranked wolves. It seemed as though Alpha Ron wanted to be extra sure that we were safe.
“Why did you take me?” She asked quietly. She reminded me of myself… she was covered in healed but fresh scars… it made me wonder.
“You wished you could leave, so you are.” Said John casually. “You’re free here, but only so much. I figure you have a right to be happy. I know others will disapprove, but I want to find a way to keep you with us without being in a cell.” He clenched the wheel of his steering wheel.
“You’re safe here too.” I told her, showing her my old scars. It was one of the few things I could never hide, no matter how hard I tried…. hex brands, burns, cuts, and healed scars….
“Thank you.” She whispered. “The scars were from them trying to get me to train… to be like them but I would freeze every encounter. They gave up on me, saying that ‘if I couldn’t fight like a hunter, maybe I could make one’, but I didn’t want that either.” She said quietly. “Our people are rare. Born with Second Sight… and magic resistance…and almost all of us have some history of a monster killing their families. But you have acted more human in the few hours that I’ve been with You than my own tribe.” She said a little angrily.
“That bastard will be my son’s first kill.” Scoffed Luna.
“When you say it like that, it makes me feel weird.” He complained.
“Good, that’s your instincts from your bloodline kicking in.” She said with a smile in her voice.
The human looked really scared after that, and I could understand why. She was a headhunter’s wife, and she would be the only human in the pack until someone was ready to claim ownership on her, imprison her, or let her go. I never thought that was possible. Humans on wolf territory can’t be let go.
There was a black SUV that broke the formation and pulled up to the window. Since all the windows were heavily tented, no one knew who was in our car, or in theirs. It looked like John common linked the men, but there wasn’t a response. There were two shots fired at John’s window, and his mother screamed. She had been shot with I could only assume was silver, because the car smelled like metal.
“Fuck!” Growled John. His mother held her wound, and opened the glove compartment. She grunted, giving John a handgun. He took off the safety, and shot at the car while he drove. She screamed and John turned to her in utter terror written on his face, and I could hear squishing sounds, then two thuds on the front seat’s floor.
“I pulled it out.” Said his mother. There were more shots, but thankfully they missed everyone. John popped their tires, causing them to swerve off the road. He sped up, going as fast as the SUV could go. There was another car, this time the SUV was red, and they fired at us.
“You’re still bleeding.” He said in a panicked voice, but she only grunted a ‘yes’. He was freaking out, but his actions were precise. John got off the nearest exit, and swerved through the busy town traffic. Humans gawked at the chase, while we practically held on for dear life. He ran a red light, and we narrowly avoided an accident.
“Make a left.” Said his mother. She was holding her own, but I could tell that she was badly injured and still bleeding. She was sounding weaker by the minute.
“Heidi, baby, mom’s going to need some of your glowy hand thing!” Shouted John, making a right. What was I thinking!!!
“Lean into the seat as much as you can Luna.” I told her, making my hands glow. Since I wasn’t touching her, it wouldn’t be as affective, but she wouldn’t die. I wouldn’t allow it. There was a drone following us, and John couldn’t shoot it that far up, and drive. I was barely keeping his mother alive and I looked at my mate. He was thinking what I was.
“Human, I got one clip left. I don’t have a choice…. Can you shoot?” He asked. “You aren’t killing anything, it’s a robot.” He said with a small frown, and swerved the car making a really sharp right, leaving the city.
Oh my lady what were we thinking! My heart raced wondering what would she do if he passed her the gun, but we didn’t have a choice. We were literally in a rock and a hard place as gunshots rang out in the air. John dropped the gun trying to turn, and it landed in his mother’s lap. She wasn’t awake anymore, and her breathing was shallow.
I was thankful that no police were involved in this, especially human ones. I looked up. The drone was making shutter sounds… it was taking pictures!
“Fuck.” I muttered. I could put a spell on it if I could get my hands free, but if I took my hands off John’s mom for even a moment, she would die. I still needed to heal her liver. At LEAST to a point to where she wasn’t bleeding anymore.
The girl was silent, but she looked determined. She rolled down the window, and John reached for the gun, fumbling to get it. He had to drive and try to pick up a now wet gun. It was slippery from his mother’s blood, that I was finally getting to slow down. If I was full blooded, I could have put some of that blood back in her body, but now was not the time to worry about what ifs.
“How much ammo do they have?!” Growled John, swerving to the left to avoid a small minivan. His phone buzzed a few times, but he couldn’t answer at the moment. The windshield got blown to bits, exploding glass everywhere, almost making me let go of his mother’s seat.
“Those are hunters! They want revenge for my husband and his friends.” Shouted the human.
“What about you?” I asked brushing the glass off my arm. I had a few scratches, but I would be fine. I made sure to keep one hand on the seat.
“What about me?” She said trying to reach for the gun, and John finally got a firm hold on it.
“I’ll ask again, can you fucking shoot human?!” He growled like an Alpha.
