Chapter 80
Eclipse
Alpha looked like he’d seen a ghost, but carried a false smile. He sat at the head of the table with his laptop. He didn’t touch his coffee or eggs. He was typing, his eyes would flash, mind linking Connor, who also looked like he was concerned. Whatever it was, it was serious, and I knew if they were going to tell me, they would have a while ago. I ate quietly, but hid my concern from the pups. There was no need for them to catch onto the tension of the adults.
Kaiden washed the dishes, while I took the pups out the packhouse with Marcy. Her training me had made us pretty close, especially since we watched the pups together all the time. But today, she would be security and it was just our pups.
Marcy held a gaze that could only be described as a slow death to any that got too close, while Heidi picked clothes and I got her some books from the general store. She wanted to get pants that would grip her broom better while she flew. She bought a bunch of jeans, but me and Marcy were silently linking each other. While we went shop to shop, I couldn’t help but wonder what they were hiding. By the time I got back the Secret Police were in the packhouse, and they were talking to Beta.
We made our way through the crowd of officers, and I had recognized the two men talking to Connor from dinner. Luna there was a small altercation with the Church, but Heidi doesn’t need to know about it. He linked me before we could get in earshot
I’ll take them to my parents’ house. I link. I contacted them, and they were already home.
We gave the bags to a warrior to put in my room for now, and put the pups in a stroller before we walked down the street. People waved and smiled at us, and I returned it, but Heidi looked defeated. “This really is all because of me isn’t it?” said Heidi, breaking the silence.
“No!” I yell, stopping her in her tracks to pull her into a hug. “They’re just a group of scared old men spreading hate and fear.” I hug her a little tighter. She looked as if she would break into tears at any moment. She didn’t deserve this, no child does. They really were after her, because of all the supernatural creatures, witches were the church’s enemy…
Marcy’s mate appeared from out of nowhere, and we pulled Heidi away from the scene. It was a short walk to my parents’ place. I hugged my mom, and dad, and we let the pups out the stroller so they could play in the living room. The house looked the same as when I was younger, the off white, eggshell walls and hardwood floors smelled of memories. I grew up in this pack, and was blessed enough to live where no one picked on you too much because you were different, or because you were weak. I even found my mate, and had pups of my own.
Mom made lunch and coffee while I told them all the goings on in the packhouse. We laughed and had a pretty good time, but in the corner of my eye I saw Heidi was upset. She shook on the couch, not saying anything. Her face was calm, but her hands were on fire.
-----Kaiden-----
I was in my office, and babygirl had already taken the pups school shopping. Beta was downstairs with Jerold, while I was in my office, speaking privately with the Chief of Police. He was a tall thin man with white hair. It looked like it had glitter in it. If Izzy were here, she would go wild. Chief Equestos was a unicorn. They were respected by human and supernatural alike for their pure hearts, and often held positions of leadership for their damn near incorruptibility.
“Your wolves should be home within the hour; however, I suggest that you halt all deliveries until we can establish some enforcement of the damn law.” Grumbled the Chief, sipping some heavily sugary coffee.
“The pack should have enough supplies for about 3 or 4 days, but I will not tell them any of this, we don’t need to start a panic.” I say firmly.
“I was hoping that since I am a creature of light, that my meeting with them would have been fruitful, but nothing short of the Wolf King himself would stop them.” He said, adding more sugar to his coffee.
“Well, they will have to settle for the prince.” I said almost amused at the irony.
He stared at me with a frown. “Your records say that your just an Alpha.” He said sternly, clicking his pen.
“And on record it will stay that way.” I shot him a glare.
“Then I suggest talking to them before they mess around and start a second war, your Highness.” He said respectfully. “How did I not notice?” He mumbled. I didn’t respond, his sweet and pure smell was starting to give me a headache.
We shook wrists, and he left the office.
I got a fax I was waiting for. The head count report for all the Omegas that were out today was looked over. Everyone was accounted for, thank the Lady. Since Connor was already downstairs, he told the Omegas not to leave the territory.
/Kaiden, something’s wrong with Heidi. She isn’t talking…. And her hands are on fire./ I got a link from babygirl
I ran down the stairs and stripped, so I could shift. I heard a few immature snickers from the officers, but I didn’t care. I shifted and howled to let her know I was coming. I grabbed my pants and ran down the hill through town, terrifying pretty much everyone that saw me. I ran as fast as my legs would go, and as a wolf I could take shortcuts through yards instead of being restricted to roads.
I shifted and scrambled into my jeans, and knocked on the door. Her mother opened it, “Thank you Amber” I said as politely as I could. I didn’t know all what Heidi could do, but I didn’t want to find out in their house. I rushed past everyone to see my little girl on the couch as unstable as me.
I put my hands on her shoulders so that she could look me in the eyes. She looked defeated; tears formed in her eyes. “Turn me in Alpha.” She said shakily. That she called me my title was a shot in the chest, but I wouldn’t let her know that. She hadn’t called me ‘Alpha’ in a while; she only did when she was in distress. I sucked in a breath; I could feel the heat coming off her hands. I knew this was about to get painful. /I will heal us; our pup is more important./ Growled my wolf.
“Not an option peppercorn.” I hold in a growl. I just didn’t understand her sometimes, but I didn’t want to scare her; she was one of us. She hugged my neck and burned the hell out my shoulders, but I didn’t say anything.
“I don’t even belong here… I’m not even-” she sobbed but I cut her off.
“You do. You are me and my Luna’s pup. This is your pack. We love you, and here or not, they would do something like this anyway.” I say firmly, not showing that her no longer flaming hands on my bare skin was still smoking from the magic. Rakaam took over for the pain department.
“Oh my goodness! Dad, your arms!” She screamed, freaking out and healing me somewhat before letting go of me. It was still raw, but at least it wasn’t open. I let out a small laugh.
It honestly hurt, but I would play it off. “This is nothing, it’ll be healed in maybe a half hour?” I chuckle.
“I burned you!” She turned about to head out the door, but I grabbed her hand. There was no way I was going to let her run off to the Lady knows where.
“I’m fine Heidi.” I lie, “Don’t leave on my behalf, little one, you’ll only make us adults worry. I get broken bones, cuts, bruises, and I’ve even been partially skinned in battle, this is nothing.” I say, giving her a firm pat on the shoulder.
Her silent sniffles broke my heart, but she was a sensitive little one….
Then I had an idea.
“We could have dinner here instead of the packhouse, would you like to come with me to get some supplies?” I ask her. Her eyes lit up, I think this was one place that she hadn’t gone yet, plus it would take her mind off all the bullshit of the church.
“I could fry some porkchops.” Said Eclipse’s mother cheerfully. I gave her a smile in return, which surprised her, I think this was the first time I had actually stopped to be nice.
Heidi rubbed her eyes, and let me take her hand, the other getting a shopping list to go into my wallet. It was only 4:45, so we had plenty of time to get what we needed. She walked with her head slightly down, but I had my hand on her back, to try and comfort her. She was a good kid, literally being pursued for having the audacity to be born. And I contemplated how I would confront the Church. It would have to be on my terms, and I would have to be careful
