Chapter 72

Kaiden
The receptionist was on her phone …. Again. She was leaned back in her chair, oblivious to anything around her…. Again. It was the Same receptionist as the time before… and she’d had multiple warnings.
She wasn’t paying attention while I had the little girl, whose name was Heidi. She wouldn’t let go of my hand, still startled at the prison environment. I tapped my foot. All I needed was to know who was logging in for solitary, and she was wasting my time. I get it, I am the only person that ever needs the reception, but damnit when I am here, she is always so unbelievably oblivious that her boss was right in front of her, fuming mad, and I can’t even show it because this little 14 year old kid is already scared of me.
I clear my throat. Nothing… That should have been More than enough to get her attention.
I sigh, and take her phone charger.
“You little shi-ALPHA… nice to see you this afternoon.” She let out a forced laugh. My face was stern. I had had it with her nonsense.
“Give me a printout for the solitary login. I want to know who put this little girl in a state like this.” I hold in a growl, but my voice was firm. Heidi loosened her grip on me, she was probably thinking on running away. “No one is out to hurt you.” I say with a smile, and use my free hand to pat her head. She didn’t like it. I should figure as much, to a kid her size I probably look like the grim reaper, I smelled like it too.
She handed me the printout and the name read Terry Cobbler, pretty much every day as far back as the printout allowed. Ok I thought, now we’re getting somewhere. I folded the paper and put it in my pocket... It’s time to take out the trash.
/You’re fired./ I growled in a link. She looked up immediately, paying attention. She had been on BookFace a full 12 minutes before I took her charger, in front of her boss, making no effort to even try to hide it. I just was curious as to how long she would sit there without looking up.
“Sir please.” She begged.
“Get your things, and get on BookFace on your own time.” I growl, making her and Heidi submit, showing her neck. “Calm down,” I tell her. “I’m not mad, just loud.” I lied. She nodded, probably not buying it, but at least she was accepting that I was not a threat to her. I waited for her to get ready to leave. She wasn’t in prison clothes anymore, she was all cleaned up in a little green dress, ready to go. She was in our smallest size, and it still kind of sagged off her. I shook my head and opted to drive her to the packhouse, just in case she tried to bolt if we walked.
A guard pulled up in my ‘stang for me, I had finally had the time to get the dents buffed out. My first baby was now shiny as my real pup’s bottom. It was high time that I got back to my Luna and pups. I still couldn’t believe it. pupS with an ‘s’. They won’t even be a true year apart… my Lady. Heidi looked confused. “I am taking you home to my mate. The Luna is a sweet, kind wolf who would love you immediately. We just had a pup, with one on the way, pay no attention to this old man’s goofy grin.” I chuckle.
She smiled a little and got in the car. “So… is it true that werewolves have puppies then?” She asked shyly.
“No, little one, we don’t.” I laugh a bit… but really I know that she wasn’t treated right by that question. “We shift in our teens, our children look human, we just call them that.” Her eyes were sparkling with wonder.
“…. I’m sorry, the coven raised me…. so I didn’t know.” She almost whispered, thinking she had offended me. I put a soft pat on her back.
“It’s ok, I can tell you had it rough. I’m sorry you had to go through that at my prison too.” I tell her gently, she looked at her feet.
“I was treated no differently than at home Mr. Alpha…”
It was at this point that I legitimately swore to protect this pup. She was mine. None shall harm her again, but I would tell her that later, when she calmed down.
/I agree. Do not forget the guard. He has disrespected us./ Rakaam growled. He understood her mistreatment, and did not like it.
We got home, and I opened the door to see gram-gram holding Marcy’s pup, Ginger. And ginger she was, with a carrot top that would make a tomato jealous. She saw me with the girl, and gave back Ginger to her mother, who scooped her up like she had had her the entire day.
Her eyes were void black with her wolf for a second. She was so swift that she knocked me over, making me plant on my ass outside on the step. She engulfed Heidi into a big hug before she could even think to run. I had forgotten how strong my grandmother was, under her sweet demeanor is one of a warrior. “You poor thing, all the thoughts in your little mind…. You will come with me.” She said sweetly.
I got up, rubbing my backside. My grandfather dared not to say a single thing. It would start a fight if grandmother even thought for a second he would protest. “I couldn’t imagine going my whole life being rejected. You will be my granddaughter as well, call me gram-gram little one.” Heidi immediately started crying. Gram-gram is a true ancient. She has powers in her own right that I have no idea what they are, or what they do, just that she carries the black eyes of rage.
She held her like that, then sat her at the table, along with me because I had not eaten yet, and she’d started cooking. I did not question her. Heidi wasn’t as scared as she was when she left the prison, and I wondered if that was grandmother’s doing. Now that I think about it… babygirl felt fine being around grandfather after we left their castle… and no one here was feeling the ill affects of being around him. He literally dominates the soul in your body, to the point that I have seen people need to rest just from him saying hello…. She must heal souls, while he can desynchronize them.
“It only took you 200 years to figure it out my little Kaidey.” Smiled grandmother, putting more food on my plate than I could hope to finish. Connor exploded laughing, and I shot him a glare.
“Eat.” She commanded in her Alpha voice, forcing me to comply. It was good, fried ham, baked potatoes, macaroni and cheese, and beans. When I finished she filled it again. She had not had anyone to mother in centuries and it showed. I looked pleadingly as she stacked my plate high again. Rakaam whined, my human stomach was not big enough, and shifting in the house would make her mad.
/Grandfather help./ I begged in a mind link. I had never wanted to die so badly. I had to submit myself in my own home… and ask for help…She would not let me leave until my second helping was finished. He yawned and went upstairs. The prick!
/You are getting it easy. The other pups had 3 helpings./ He linked flatly. /Your mate is awake./ He mentioned. /She is a small thing, but she may be your salvation being with pup./ He said, obviously amused.
“Food.” She growled almost sprinting down the stairs. She took my fork, sat in my lap and finished my food, and the last of what gram-gram made. /…Thank the Lady, she loves me after all.. I thought to myself.
“Oh, my Lady! I don’t know what came over me, I ate all your food! Are you still hun-” Gram-Gram’s eyes flashed from silver to black rapidly.
“No!” grunted everyone, even Heidi.
