Book 2: Chapter 21
Heidi
“Your wolf chose me in there...” Said Ann. Garnet’s calm, silly demeanor changed. He was no longer smiling, and his aura changed to one of danger.
“Assassins can’t get rank any higher than Warrior. Technically, I could be an Alpha somewhere, but I Vow my life to the Crown as a Shadow Guard. Once a month I will be gone on assignment for at least a week, with no guarantee of return… But I can promise there isn’t anything I won’t do for you. If that isn’t something you’re willing to live with, reject Silence now before the Harvest, or else he might kill you.” He said firmly, opening the door for us.
“I’m still married.” She retorted.
“Death do you part right?” He said flatly. She looked at him with a little shock.
“… honestly, I’m not ready for another relationship… but from what I’ve heard about mates, it’s something that I want… I think.” She said looking down.
“Well, you have the summer to think about it… but please. It’s on October 31st… don’t wait until then.” He warned, and she nodded her head, but held his hand. She wasn’t all wolf… but I think she felt the mate bond....
We got to the steps, and there was a guy on the phone in the way to the stairs. “Alphas on break Shadow Commander.” He said casually. He wore a badge on his chest, that said ‘Warrior Commander’ on it, but he wasn’t as bulky as Garnet. I was beginning to think that this was staged. Commanders lead the warriors…. And this wolf that stood next to me was the chief assassin.
“Not in the mood.” He growled, picking him up, and moving him to the side. “Princess.” He bowed, with his hand pointing to the stairs.
There were murmurs, and I could only assume why. I sighed as I went up. Garnet didn’t mention once that he could smell that I was different. But these were packhouse wolves. Every one of them that lived in this building were honestly strong enough to lead their own packs somewhere, even the women. Each of the families that lived here were handpicked by Alpha.
There was a slow clap. “Bravo, you failed.” Said Alpha Ron, raising a glass of wine to me. John sat next to him slightly mad at his father. I instantly felt bad. I didn’t know I was being tested….
“Heidi, you did well, but you lack confidence and strength. Warrior Garnet thank you for escorting her here.” said his mother, and Garnet bowed.
“It is my sworn duty, your grace. May I request being the personal guard of your highness’ pup and mate.” He said it with a smile, but he was still upset, I could kind of smell it. He sat in front of Alpha Ron quietly.
“Of course. You have always been an asset to the crown. With two Shadows watching, no other should be able to get into range.” Said Luna Aemi with a smile. Alpha Ron motioned for me to stand in front of his desk, and I did, with my head down.
“You failed also because you consistently question yourself, you don’t punish those who deserve it, and Jesse put on a good show. I almost thought she hated you.” Said John’s father. “Though, I doubt any of that can be fixed, since well, this is engrained into your soul. I can teach you how to hide it.” He tapped some papers to be neater on his desk. “But I will commend you, as your kindness may create a loyalty within the pack that cannot be created through any fear… but that can work both ways. There will be wolves who are much stronger than you, and they may question your authority if you are too nice.” He warned and I nodded. He pointed for me to sit, and I did in front of the desk next to Ann.
“Heidi, I think father meant next to Me.” Chuckled John and I got up, moving to be near him. I almost wanted to cry. But then it would prove he was right. I’d be a crybaby and a poor Luna.
“Don’t think that way, that isn’t what I meant. The King was right.” He chuckled. “He told me he’d feed me to King Aeschylus if I made you cry.”
“What father means is that we’re both too new to this. And don’t worry Heidi, you know I’ll always protect you.” He kissed me on the top of the head, and hugged me close to him.
“Oh, now that I think of it. Garnet, you should be released from the curse soon, would you like to take the rest of the year-” He cut him off with a deep bow.
“Yes, Please your highness. I think my mate is in the pack, but I’m not sure if she is.” He said very quickly, and Alpha Ron got up to flick him on the forehead. “Sorry.” He said with a smile.
“Alright then, no assassinations until you find her.” He chuckled, looking at Ann. “That also reminds me, you still smell human little one, you should be able to handle my blood now. Here.” He bit his wrist and poured it into a large coffee mug. Once it was full, he licked his wrist clean. “This will turn you completely, and hopefully awaken a wolf within you.” He passed it to her.
“Thank you.” She took the mug and drank it without hesitation, and I wondered why. I thought after today, that she would want to run away, or hate wolves, but she seemed to be embracing her new future. She coughed a few times, and her eye color flashed to a silver before Garnet caught her. She passed out.
“It seems I fully turned her into an Omega or maybe one above, a Kappa… I haven’t done that in ages, though it’s up to the Goddess to wake her wolf or not.” He said with a small smile. “Only the King, myself, and Phillip may. All others will get sick, though I need another wolf of my blood to awaken them first, so it lessens the chance of them dying.” He mentioned.
“So that’s why you asked me to do it.” Said John.
“No, that was to magically bind her to you. She is your servant until the Lady takes her. Here we know the old ways, and use them.” He said making me a login. “And now, you two are Assistant Alpha and Luna. If I leave without you, you two are to lead the pack after I train you both.” He said with a small smile.
“What happens if she becomes Garnet’s mate?” I asked. Alpha Ron laughed deeply.
“Well, she probably is now that she’s fully turned as an Omega or Kappa, but nothing. She will still be bound to you both. Her wolf smells too weak to be of use, but if it wakes up, it will cling to you both like glue. But Not as much as to her mate of course.” He chuckled.
Garnet held her like a bride as he sat through the meeting. Turns out, he was to pretty much never leave our side, though he was already our neighbor. It seems my father in law was already thinking of moving his most skilled warriors and spies into the area we chose to live.
“My mate, we need to have them ready by Monday for their first hearing.” Said Luna Aemi.
“I know… We have to prepare faster, but today is already gone.” He mumbled. “I have your logins ready, and both of you seem to understand the interface. Tomorrow we will train on how to use the Charred Council, High Council, and Alpha Systems.” He said dismissing us. I didn’t even realize that we waisted so much time, it was already 3:50.
John held my hand down the stairs of the packhouse, followed by Garnet, holding Ann. The pack looked respectfully, bowing to John, and he nodded for them to stand. But I noticed that many of the packhouse members didn’t like me. They gave me a glare, and I could only assume it was because I smelled of magic. They fear that kind of thing, because they can’t use it. They also fear what I could do, but I would never do anything evil with it if I could help it…. maybe they smelled that the Horned One was my creator. This could affect John’s position… I held his hand a little tighter.
“Is something the matter?” He asked when we were halfway to the house. I was going to tell him how I truly felt, but if I did, others might here. It was already a mess that there were others who already knew Ann for what she truly was…. If someone heard about me, it would make chaos.
“I’ll tell you later.” I said quietly. I was right, there were about 4 warriors who seemed to appear from nowhere on patrol that heard. They looked like they wanted the see what it was, but they would get nothing if I could help it.
“Ok, but I want to hear about all of your day, not just phone calls and reports from everyone else.” He said with a small frown. I didn’t like hiding things from him, but this was necessary. I didn’t want to tell him about what Jesse did either, but I would… I would have to.
“Alright.” I said quietly.
We walked silently after that, but the walk was peaceful. He opened the door for us, and Garnet put Ann carefully in her room. He looked worried for her, but a little happy too. She would be like us soon, how much so, I didn’t know, but she seemed like she was ready for the change. She just went for it… no hesitation. It was almost as if she wanted to no longer be human anymore.
My mate sat in a chair in the kitchen, waiting for me to sit near him, and tell him what was on my mind. He didn’t say anything, but his look said it all. He looked serious, and Garnet sat with him, drinking a cup of instant coffee he had in his pocket.
“John… are you sure you don’t want someone from the council?” I asked quietly, and he looked like he was holding in a growl. He took a deep breath, then a long-drawn-out exhale.
“Who was it?” He asked. His eyes were his wolf.
“What?” I blinked and he was already halfway across the room. He hugged me tightly before I could think to go anywhere.
“Who told you this?” He asked seriously. He held in a growl, but that he smelled violent made me not want to tell him my mind.
“No one… John what I am could-” he cut me off.
“I know and I don’t care. I love you, Heidi. Mate or not I would choose you every time…. I don’t care about this position. It means nothing if I don’t have You at my side. I don’t want anyone else….” He rested his face in my shoulder, smelling my mark.
“I love you too John, that’s why I ask…. I didn’t want to drag you down with me.” I told him, resting my head on his. We stood like this for a long time before he let me go, but he didn’t leave my side.
