Chapter 76

Connor
I was at the airport, playing with the thin white tuft of hair I was getting. I was aging in the hair department for no reason, but at least my face was still the same. I was waiting for a certain pipsqueak while Alpha defended the territory from an intruder who was on the edge of the border, but wouldn’t cross it. He kept hunting on the edge, which made the warriors uneasy. Heidi was already on the plane, so we couldn’t just tell her to wait.
She was almost 16, but gram-gram didn’t mind, because she was planning on visiting soon anyway. She had come home early, because she wanted to live with the pack. Turns out she was a healer, and she could do cool shit with her hands. Well, I thought it was cool anyway, everyone else was actually kind of scared, seeing as how we don’t use magic.
And right on time, there she was, still tiny as hell, but at least she looked healthy. She looked around, not seeing me, which was odd, seeing as how I was taller than any human in the building. “Peppercorn!” I shouted, making her jump, then run to me for a hug. It was something I made up a year ago, and it just stuck.
“Uncle!” She giggled. Being gone 2 years did her good. She chatted with us pretty much every other day, and got to feel like a regular kid. Well almost, I could only imagine how being the only child in a castle full of ancient old farts must have been, but she seemed happy enough.
I got her bags, and she held my other hand. “Uncle Connor, I can’t wait to show you all the stuff I learned from grandma!” She squealed excitedly. I chuckled, she was a small ball of energy, but Titus became alert. I could hear we were being followed. It was broad daylight, so at first I assumed it was humans going out the same gate as us…. Until I smelled something was off, and got tense, trying to hide it from Heidi. I smelled… I don’t know what this scent was. It wasn’t natural, but at least I could tell it wasn’t hunter.
There were 5 men, waring the cloth of the Church, approaching us…. Then the wheels in my head began to turn. The most adorned one stepped forward confrontationally. “…Children of the Horned One.” He sneered, earning a growl from me. I didn’t care if anyone heard.
I let my eyes flash red as a warning. I put Heidi in the car, and stood in front of them. She pulled her knees to her chest; they were freaking her out and I could hear her mind race without prying.
“I won’t let them take you.” I say firmly, making her feel a little better. I put my focus back on them. “You break the law human; the travel ports are neutral unless someone transgresses the peace. We came in peace and shall leave, lest I call the Secret Police.” I warn, to their surprise. They must have thought I was illiterate to the law.
“Interesting… this one has knowledge.” He sneered. I returned it.
“Father, these do not look of sin.” Said the one on his right.
“The Dark One is here though… I can feel it.” Said another.
“We have nothing to do with that.” I said with crossed arms.
“Indeed, but that means nothing to the Lord of Light. All darkness must be purged…. However, we cannot break the covenant signed by the Holy Seat.” He clenched his fist. “Break the law Dog and you will be stuffed with enough silver, that your Harlot of the Night won’t recognize you.” He said with a laugh, making my blood boil. I growled a final warning, fighting my wolf, and got inside the car. They did not leave, and I didn’t want to start a war on security cameras.
I called the Secret Police anyway, tipping them off to this bullshit and waited for them to escort me back to the territory. They came pretty quick, and one was human, the other was clearly not. The human, who was about 6’2 and had dirty blonde hair, talked to the Church guys, and the other walked to me with full authority. This guy smelled pretty fucking old, but he didn’t look it. He held the stern face of a man who knew the War… but I would be lying if I said he was That old?
“Papers,” Said the officer calmly. He had reddish brown eyes, dark brown hair, and was taller than me by at least a head. Now that he was closer…. He smelled like cow, ancient, and testosterone… a tinge of fear racked down my spine, realizing that this guy was not to be fucked with. Lady WHY me? I thought you liked me? First you give me gray hairs, and now I’m gonna get eaten by what I eat. I thought.
The bull man smiled, and handed back my information. “Well, Beta Connor, me and my human partner will escort you home, and for the record, don’t call me bull man… name’s Jerald.” He snorted, shaking my wrist, responding to my inner monologue. That he could do that, especially not being a wolf confirmed the ancient part of the scent…. I nodded, and pulled out the parking lot. Heidi was still a mess, scared she was going to be taken.
“Ey, peppercorn, chill. No one is going to take you. I swear it. You are my niece, and one of the pack; never forget that pipsqueak.” I rub her back in small circles until she calmed down. I could get it. All the shit she’s been through could be a book. It would be sad as fuck, but someone would read it. I thought. /No. they would not./ Growled my wolf, I ignored.
She calmed down when she could smell the pack, and I did too. The secret police took us all the way to the territory, and went into it, to speak with my brother. I gave him a quick link on everything, and he was upset, as expected. I pulled into the garage, and she got out. “Mom!” She screamed to Eclipse. They hugged, and cried, while the pups jumped on her in excitement. She was our blood as far as anyone was concerned, and we made sure to make her feel that way.
My brother kissed her on the top of the head, and it melted my heart: he claimed her as his kid in front of the pack. Everyone wanted her to feel welcome, we had adopted her in earnest after all. She still didn’t believe it, but she accepted it. Shelly helped her get her things and took them upstairs with a warrior, while me and my brother had to speak with Officer Jerold.
He got out the car, and I swear I was reminded of grandfather. They had sent an ancient to escort me home, not that they had to. He was in his uniform, looking like he would rip it apart from flexing an arm, which made me kind of want to laugh, if not for the offence that would probably be taken.
He intimidated Kaiden too. /Holy shit they sent a cow man./ He linked.
/His name is Jerold and he’s a minotaur/, I link and elbow him, making him growl at me.
/He smells like the council./ He mentioned.
/I wouldn’t be surprised if he was./ I comment.
He took off his hat and let his slightly spiraled horns come out his head, and his fangs, now that he was in an area full of supernaturals, and shook our wrists. “Why don’t you stay for dinner, neighbor. You seem like you could use the hospitality.” Said Kaiden, like the Alpha he was.
Jerrold’s stomach growled. “Only if you have my human partner as well, Noah is as good as one of us, I assure you.” He said with a chuckle, stepping inside first. A disrespect, but Kaiden could not challenge it.
We’d never had a human… ever in the packhouse alive, and he stepped in behind his partner, and sat at the dining room table, being gestured by my mate. “There’s a first for everything.” I blurt, to my brother’s dismay. He still regularly ate humans… so it would be awkward to talk to what you eat for him, but I would have him suffer. I don’t eat humans if I can help it, there is no reason other than the intense urge of the crave. Kaiden however was still a little offended that I was so casual about this new history changing event.
/You cook then./ He linked in a growl.
/Oh, stop being a pup about it. And YOU touch that stove with my mate cooking and see what happens./ I snap back, making the officer laugh.
We both turned our heads to him; Nancy was already close to done making dinner anyway, and had poured them some coffee. Officer Noah was holding Jason, and talking to Nancy, while the other girls were upstairs giggling like crazy.
“You don’t say lil Jase? Gimmie your best roar then.” He said with a smile, hearing my pup snarl. “Whoa!” He pretended to be startled, then tried to imitate it, and did a pretty good job. Kaiden narrowed his eyes at this event, most likely wondering why I would accept it. I would give no explanation, there was no hostility.
I sat across from them, and he passed me my pup. I let him run upstairs with Caleb, his favorite cousin, and I could hear them wrestling immediately. Kaiden looked uncomfortable sitting at the same table as a human and his partner, but he would just have to deal with it. It’s his own damn fault for being an ass. Nancy had made some fried chicken, southern style with real mashed potatoes and greens. We always had juice, tea, some cheap wine or water in the fridge for anyone to choose.
We served ourselves, and there was enough for anyone else that wanted some. You gotta be fast though, that smell gets around, and Shelly took a good portion upstairs already.
“Thank you, miss Nancy,” Said Officer Noah showing his neck. He was polite as a wolf, and I couldn’t figure it out…. Maybe he was an Omega? But then he would smell at least a little wolf.
