Chapter 31
Eclipse
It had been a week since Alpha’s meeting… and with it came a small remodeling of the office. All this started last month, though nothing else happened. I figured Wade had given up….
Also, it gave me a chance to finally Really Look at the MoonPack System. I like it that Alpha made a makeshift office for me in his. I had a small desk, my own laptop, a bookshelf, and he gave me my own pack email address. Honestly, I was just reading a mystery novel.
The book was a thriller. Everyone was a suspect, because the main character’s neighbor just inherited 5 million dollars. Then he got murdered before he could cash it in… It was one of the Shamrock Homes series, one of the best classical novel series made in my opinion. I’d just started this one, which was the 3rd of 62 in the series, but technically…. I was slacking off big time.
I may have been Luna, but since my office and emails were new… I had nothing To do… There was also the fact that the MoonPack System looked like ancient hieroglyphics to me too, but he’d already told me he would train me.
However to anyone else, It looked like I was working. I was ‘reading’ emails and drinking a cup of coffee from the kitchen brought up to me by a Warrior. I know he knew I was goofing off; he knew I knew he was silently wanting me to do Luna business, but it was getting good and so long as no one stopped me, I would continue reading.
My mind wandered to my last shift. It had made me more comfortable around him. His presence didn’t overbear me like when I first met him. I remember, just a few days ago, just something as passive as him breathing made me want to run away. But now I think I have at least a small handle on it, as long as I’m not completely terrified, and he isn’t aggressive. I like his company. I loved being in his office just sitting there reading. It was peaceful.
I heard the beep of my laptop, meaning I had an email. I chose to continue reading.
I ignored it, the killer was seen on the balcony, and the detective shot at him.
Another beep. No one knew my email, so who would call me? The detective was chasing the killer down the street, unable to see his face, that he returned to the scene of the crime.
There were about three beeps in a row this time, but since no one knew my email yet, I would get to it when the chapter ended. It was getting good, but I started to feel fear well up inside me.
I felt watched, Like I was going to be attacked. I looked up to see that Alpha must have gone to the bathroom. I noticed the little flags by some of the emails.
The last one read ‘Look Behind you’, sent 5 minutes ago. I froze. I looked behind me and nothing was there. I let out a sigh of relief.
BAM!! A clawed hand slammed on the table, Alpha’s red eyes were angry with rage. I could feel his aggression and I became scared. He was naked, and I didn’t understand what was happening, but I knew I had disrespected him by ignoring him, and he didn’t like it. “Alpha” I stuttered out, backing up and he let out an annoyed sigh.
“If we were under attack, you would be dead, babygirl. I stalked you for a good 30 minutes. I even changed into my wolf.” He said with a smirk at the end.
“…. but you’re right here.” I complained. He leaned down and kissed my cheek,
“Yes, BUT what if I wasn’t? … You were so engrossed in your book that I don’t think you even scented the difference. You need to pay more attention babygirl. I smoothed over that nonsense with the CrimsonMoon pack last month, but now there is bad blood between us. I am going to meet at another damned emergency council meeting. I was personally requested... and required to be a tie breaker. I’ll be back by about 5.” He said, picking up his pants off the floor.
/Why are we not following him to the bedroom, whined Shimmer?/ Mate is the only thing on her mind. If it wasn’t Alpha, then she wasn’t interested. She snorted.
I needed to calm her down, she was restless, and I needed to shake off the fear I just felt. Fresh air was the remedy for that. I went for a run. I wasn’t going to leave the inner ring of the forest, close to the pack. That way, I would still be close to Warriors should I need anyone…. But I almost laughed at that. The pack was safe. There was No way anyone would be able to get this close without being noticed. I also trusted that Alpha Crimson gave up.
I wanted to practice shifting while I was out there too. It would help a lot with my slow shifting speed… As much as I hated exercise, doing it as my wolf didn’t feel like it. It would also give me time to think but honestly, I didn’t want anyone with me. It was nothing against anyone, but this was something I felt I had to do. I took some spare clothes, and jogged off the packhouse property. It was nice and cloudy; perfect for a small outing.
Nobody stopped me, but I didn’t care. I did take Alpha’s words to heart though. No headphones, no distractions, just a girl on a dirt trail in the middle of pack territory, not too far from the packhouse. If it weren’t for it being at the top of the hill, I’d actually be able to see it proper. But I did see the occasional warrior patrol, their imposing wolf bodies just prancing in the woods.
No one spoke to me, but I’d seen the same ones pretty much circle me, giving me a wide birth. As I jogged though I saw less and less of them, but I was still in the territory. I was only a five-minute run to the housing district, still well within the area I felt comfortable. I scanned the tree line, and the only thing to be seen was the occasional bird or deer.
I was honestly trying to find that creek with the turtles, and I know I still had time before he got back; it was early. I figured now would be a good place as any to shift. As a wolf I would smell my way there. I had little practice, but I would figure it out. I let Shimmer take over, and it only took us a few minutes. It was also not that painful anymore. The more you do it, the better you get, like most skills really. I smelled the air, trying to find that little stream with the turtles.
I ran at a slow trot down a pine needle covered path, unsure if this was the right one. I didn’t hear any water from the stream, but I did hear Warriors in the distance. They howled warnings for Rogues to come respectfully if they wished to join, or be barred from entry. I turned around, going away from their growls. I’d gone a little too far, but I knew it was around here somewhere.
I smelled the trees, but I didn’t know what I was looking for. It didn’t deter me but soon I found Shimmer had gotten us lost, because she was looking for Alpha. The trees were older here, and the air was fresh, but I didn’t recognize this section of the territory. However, there were no border markers, so I knew we were in it. Then it started to sprinkle. I mentally scolded her; this was literally the one thing I was trying to avoid.
I felt watched.
From the bushes in front of me emerged a giant, battle scarred, solid dark red wolf, with green eyes. It was Alpha Wade, and he was yards away in the distance, slowly walking to me. I bolted, howling for the pack’s safety. Alpha was right. I wasn’t paying enough attention, and this was Exactly what he warned me about.
I ran in between the smallest gaps I could fit because this hulking wolf was almost as big as Alpha. He barreled through larger gaps with ease, and I was terrified, but I remembered what Alpha told me. I let Shimmer take over, giving me a second wind, and she ran in any random direction she could. He was close on our heels, but we were more agile.
I zipped past the stream I was looking for and just jumped into it. It slowed me down being on the slippery wet rocks, but he slowed down too. The rain had picked up, and it was hard to keep my balance on turns, making up where I was going. There were no more trails, I didn’t see any more pack markers, and he was right behind me. I stumbled for only a moment, and he caught up with me! He was so fast, and there was a pain in my back leg. He lifted my back end off the ground with no effort, while my front legs frantically galloped to get away.
He bit down hard, breaking the skin and I wasn’t able to move it. I yelped at first, then it turned into screams. He showed no remorse. He did not care. my leg was broken.
He threw me on the ground, causing me to no longer hold my form, and I tried to crawl away from this scarred angry wolf. I heard an engine close approaching, along with howls from my pack closing in. A man got out the truck with the engine still running, and tossed me in the back. I lost so much blood I couldn’t fight back, and Shimmer took over trying to heal us.
Being off road made the ride bumpy, and I began to feel dizzy, as my bleeding was still strong, but slowing. I had never felt pain like this before…. And I was afraid of what they would do to me when I got to where they were taking me. I didn’t want to know, and I heard more howls, louder, as if they were right behind us. I prayed that they were.
The trees burst full of wolves, all in their hulking forms snarling and Alpha Wade no longer escorted the truck. He ran off deep into the forest, tail high, but outnumbered. Some wolves chased him, while others surrounded us, keeping the driver from going full speed. They were hunting the truck. The driver had to slow down more, unable to go full speed in the rain and the slick mud. And a large, lean dark brown, almost black female wolf smashed into the side of the small truck. It caused it to hit a tree, flinging me out of the back of the truck, and everything went black.
