Book 2 Chapter 8

John
After everyone was full of cake and my real mother’s cooking, my mate was asleep in my arms. It was because my real father suggested it as a joke, and her wolf took it literally. She was a respectful wolf; I wouldn’t expect anything less from Sparkle.
I held her like a baby, and I figured she could sleep in my room. She didn’t even get a chance to open the mating ceremony gifts. As tradition, it was the she wolf who got them, but it was never meant to be anything over the top or elaborate. It was meant to be something that one would actually use or ware. Elaborate ones were often never used because no one wanted to break whatever that kind of gift would be.
She looked like an angel wrapped in my scent. It drove my wolf wild, but I had things I still had to attend to. I was an Heir after all, and duties were already expected of me. I left the door open and the lights off. I walked into the Alpha’s office, where dad, Alpha Kaiden and all their Betas, and Gammas of both packs were seated. I felt out of place in my dirty jeans, but they didn’t seem to care. I was motioned to sit next to my father, and there was an empty seat for Heidi, who was currently the only thing on my mind.
“There was an attack on the border. My son was too bold. Forgive me Your Highness for the loss of Warrior Summers. We will return in a days’ time.” He said with a bowed head. I didn’t remember that name, but I had seen him a few times… that guy practically lived out there. I didn’t worry about the number of days I had left here. As long as I had Heidi.
“There is nothing to forgive Ron, your eldest son was banished and disowned. He is a traitor to the council and my grandfather.” Said Alpha seriously. “Also, you are still welcome in my house. Do not forget this.” He said with a small smile.
“I caught and detained one of them.” Said his brother. “I learned that their master plan was full of holes. They thought they could sneak into the border, and kidnap the pups to lore you out and poison you with this.” Said Beta. He put a long spear with a silver point on Alpha’s desk. There was no way that plan would have worked.
“That plan almost sounds like a diversion…” I mumbled. I got some growls thrown my way, as it was not my place to speak while a Prince was speaking, but I already had. Alpha held up his hand to stop them.
“He’s right. It was. On the Charred side, I killed another one who had a much smaller set of assassin’s tools meant for long distance. He was going to get most likely just John, because this doesn’t seem like enough to kill you.” Said Alpha, passing it to my father.
He examined it, and sniffed it a few times and nodded. “Your Highness you’re right. I’ve been poisoned with wolf’s bane enough times that I’m immune to the stuff… but John hasn’t had that training yet.” He said firmly, and passed it back.
“And how do you go about doing that?” Asked Gamma Branson, she stood behind her brothers who sat side by side.
“Oh, it isn’t hard. You eat one flower, and increase the number of flowers by one every three days until you get to 50 flowers in one sitting. Honestly, it can be done until 25, but 50 is better, as that’s the maximum poison concentration obtainable.”
All three of them nodded. I wondered would they go through that? I wouldn’t mind if it meant I wouldn’t get killed in my sleep.
“About how strong would you say John is?” Asked Beta Connor.
“I would say he’s as strong as Delta Uteer.” Said my father. It still felt weird to think of him as such, but it was getting easier. They all nodded or hummed in agreement.
“If I may speak.” Said who I assumed was his Beta. He waited for my father to continue “His grace should be trained in Alpha and Heir duties my lord.” He said formally. There were nods of agreement.
“Would he be able to be approved by the council yet?” Asked Alpha.
“He does not have his power given by the Goddess yet. He is not ready for the council. They will reject him as an heir.” Father said frustrated.
“I can give him my blood to awaken his abilities.” Said Alpha Kaiden.
“Alpha you don’t have to do that!” I yelled standing up, and I got growls from the other men in the room except Gamma Branson, Beta Connor, and Alpha Kaiden. They chuckled.
“Then take some from moon man.” Said Alpha, and Beta growled at him. Everyone else gasped and showed their necks. They thought a fight was going to break out. I didn’t because I had seen this before.
“Brother.” Beta Connor warned. He didn’t mean any of it, I had seen this dance a thousand times.
“Yes?” Said Alpha with a smug smile, but they both got slapped by Gamma. The others looked shocked, and I laughed with her. Both brothers shot me a glare. I became quiet as a church mouse holding in the rest of my laughter, and Alpha cleared his throat.
“Anyway, accept this as my gift to you John. You will be the one to protect my daughter, and to one day lead at the side of the King.” He said trying to be serious, but he had a genuine smile on his face.
“It would be an honor since you insist Alpha.” I said with a bow.
“Rise pup.” He said amused. I walked up to him, and I could see that my father was proud of him. This was an honor. To not only be recognized by the Royal House, in any way, was honor. Wolves live and die to see a glimpse of his majesty, and here I was about to partake in one of the most ancient, sacred, and secret rituals known to wolf kind. We both took a deep breath at the same time. He was unleashing his truest power within himself. I had only felt it once in my life, and it filled my heart with dread.
However, this did not stop me or my wolf. I could feel him at the forefront of my mind, ready to accept his power, so I may use it. We were nervous but ready. I let my eyes become the earthen whisky brown of my people, and I watched Alpha Closely.
He bit his wrist, and his eyes became golden, like that of the King himself. He held his arm out and I was supposed to drink. I knew the moment this touched my lips I would probably flip out on the floor. Alpha’s blood smelled like jet fuel. I hesitated, but I drank three mouthfuls.
As I predicted, every muscle in my body cramped but I didn’t scream. I silently spasmed on the floor, feeling the power of an awakened ancient flow through me all at once. It lasted all of five seconds, but it felt like an eternity. At first, I felt like I was on fire, then I felt like I had sand in my blood. I could see my wolf in my mind surrounded by an aura of sand and stone. He looked cool.
I stopped cramping and tried getting up, but I couldn’t move. I was aware of everything around me, and my father’s pack as well as Alpha Kaiden’s seemed content. “I’ll carry him to his room.” Said my father amused. I wanted to say something, but I couldn’t move my mouth.
I can get up. I common linked and everyone chuckled.
“Pup you just ingested about a pints worth of Charred One’s Blood. Enough to kill a wolf of low birth. Rest.” Commanded my father softly, and my wolf decided it was a good idea to force me to comply. Traitor I snarled at him. I am tired. He complained with a pitiful whine. Also, if we ‘rest’ we get to be with our little mate. He said slyly and I had forgotten all about that.
As much as I felt less manly being carried, the thought of laying in bed next to my mate was more than worth it. I stopped trying to move around, especially since it hurt to force it. My body was jelly from all the cramping, I would be normal in an hour or so. My head was lain on the bed next to Heidi, who looked scared out of her mind in her sleep.
Alpha Kaiden turned on the light and opened the door. She’s still afraid of the dark. Don’t forget that. He linked me. He took one last look before leaving me with her alone. It was no longer his place to care for her in this situation; it was mine.
I was speechless, and concerned. My mate was most likely having a nightmare because of me…... but I didn’t know…. I laid there, testing if I could wiggle any fingers, and slowly I could. I inched my arms around her, and held on to her while she silently cried. I wondered what was happening to her. She said nothing, and I could probably pry now that my powers were activated, but I just couldn’t do it. if she wasn’t too scared about it, she might tell me. Also, I knew … now that my powers were activated so soon… I would probably smell scary to her. It couldn’t be helped… I was an ancient. I couldn’t help but feel I dragged her into this….
I’m sorry. I linked her in my sleep, I know she wouldn’t hear, but I didn’t care.
