Book 3: Chapter 85
Tiffany
Because of his mate, my grandma. Queen Gwen swayed King Ashital to aid the Light creatures.
The Dragon King did it for his wives and whelps…
The Vampire King understood that without humans, his people would starve to death…
King Jerold is half demon. He too should be on the Night side, but he killed and ate witches. Hell, even the fear of him is instinctual.
She turned people like the Charred One, Turrus, The Elf King, the Beast King, The Troll Father Grihk, Goblin King Wix, their children, demigods like Tat’tow, the Dry One….the children of the God of War to the light….If *all* of those mighty forces were united…This world would have been *toast.* All that they wouldn’t have killed, bred, or ate… would have been dust.
I also know the Moon Goddess didn’t want her father to win the war… but she didn’t want Urth’s destruction either… As a Dark Witch I know that was part of her mate’s plans…
She made mates for those who could be swayed…. After all… Most will do *anything* to keep their mate safe.
How could their mates and children live in a world that holds no life?
“And I assume with the humans, that you at least *tried* to negotiate a different price?” I asked, and he looked at me as if I asked a dumb question.
“You forget I am a troll.” He said flatly. “I did honest work, and I wanted honest pay. I did not ask for that payment, they offered. Then they got upset when I took the payment THEY offered. My actions made A Few priests turn into an Army. They were never going to pay me.” He snorted, “It’s 4; I should head out so I can get there before sundown.”
“I’ll watch the sheep.” I beamed.
I watched him leave, and he left me with free reign of the house. I watched the sheep in the front yard, they didn’t really do much or go too far.
I was told that I could eat whatever in the fridge, and if I didn’t like his stone soup, that I could make my own food with the veggies, and chicken he had in his ice storage. There weren’t real stones in it, but rather thick ox bones, clearly hand broken….
It smelled good, but… I saw innards in there too… I’m sure they’re all cleaned because it’s a delicacy with trolls.
But I’ll Pass.
/Never know ‘til you give it a taste!/ Theo’s mouth watered.
I relented and took a spoonful…. Holy Shit that was flavorful… With it on top of the stove, and the wood fire almost out, it’ll stay warm a while longer, then I’ll put it away for them.
This place was pretty modern, yet, the solutions to problems like food spoilage was magic. The ice was likely from some world where it doesn’t melt. I even found some stray wool that was ready to spin, and Theo wanted to so badly that I caved in and let her. The sun was getting low, but they were right in front of the door. I figured I could put them to bed in 10 more minutes.
I picked up the yarn, sat down, and as soon as I was about to relax, I felt vibrations under my feet…
\[Growl-Growly! Crock Noises\]
/Awe man! This is some *bullshit!*/ Complained Theo. /The Sun is Still Technically Up!/
“Oh my gods Damn It I *JUST* SAT DOWN!” I yelled, running out of the house.
I shifted, leaping into the air with a gust of wind that shook the windows of Grihk’s cave. In the air I could really see how absolutely difficult this was going to be…
I should have *known* this task wasn’t going to be easy.
A Giant crock shifter was hunting my flock as SOON AS THE SUN WENT DOWN!
\[Growl!\] The great beast hissed, and the sheep scattered all directions. I flew a little higher to see that most got into bushes or ran into the forest, but it was chasing two.
I could see why Grihk had a hard time too…
The single crock shifter galloped on all fours, but he was probably as long as the Father of Trolls…
It sounded like he was laughing as the little sheep screamed. If he managed to get one in his mouth, it would probably be no bigger than eating a single mini slider…
\[RAH!!!\] he boomed.
The dark brown crock was heavily scarred, covered in healed cuts, and missing left eye. Around his mighty waist was a thick leather belt that held large knives and hunting tools neatly in a row. On his back was a giant sack to steal the sheep likely alive…
After all… this is a *shifter*…. Not a mindless beast. I bet he wants the skin to sell and the meat to eat, without doing any of the *work* to raise his own!
\[Fuck off!\] I yelled in serpent, thanks to Theo, but he either didn’t understand, or didn’t see me as any kind of threat.
He gave a glance as if I were a pup… But to be fair he looked like he could pay jump rope with my pelt….
/For now, I say let’s stay in the air./ Said Theo. /I don’t have the arms and legs to fight, but we Do have acid, fire, and our tail!/
One sheep escaped, leaving him chasing one who ran like the wind. Its soft fleece bounced as it ran as fast as it could, and I dived… Acid right now would be too dangerous for the sheep. However, Theo was right; my tail was a whip.
I thought it was best to try that first. I know it won’t kill him… but it will *hurt*.
As I dived, I lined myself up with his back. I swooped so fast before doing a spin, arcing up, that I nailed him with the fluff of my tail with a crack!
If his hide wasn’t so thick I KNOW I’d have broken a bone, since about three of his back scoots flew to the left.
\[Snarl!\] he said screamed, snapping, and missing at me… but I felt the whoosh of them slam closed.
To be fair… that looked like his ONLY soft spot….
“BAHH!” Dolly screamed from the sound of the bone-shattering clap of such a maw closing. I could feel the vibration.
Of course *she’s* the one in trouble!
\-----a few hours later-----
The sun was coming up… and since he was the only tormentor of the little guys, all I could do was hope for the best.
He snapped massive jaws, taking some of the earth with him. He tried scooping up the sheep, but I wouldn’t let him.
I wish I had arms and legs!
Then I could just scoop her up, but with only fingers on wings, and an acidic maw, I’d just hurt the poor thing.
I swooped again, putting myself in harm’s way, between the mighty mouth and the stupid sheep.
Dolly got away.
“GO HOME!” I yelled at the top of my lungs, and the little sheep seemed to follow directions.
The giant crock tried to spin around but I had an idea. The only fleshy bits on him was inside his mouth… so to hurt him….
I’m going to have to do it.
