Chapter 21
Eclipse
He slept for what seemed like ages and then… just got up and sat up like nothing happened, though almost red eyed. He looked so tired still, but I could feel that he wanted to go home, and honestly, I did too. The police put the 25 your old girl in handcuffs, and they spoke with Alpha about her, who was terrified knowing we were wolves.
“Mrs. Peterson is now officially within your custody, Alpha Kaiden. By law of the Human-Wolf Treaties of 1605 and 1607, since they attacked you and were known breakers of the peace, she is now yours.” The Human man sounded very uncaring, like he had done this a thousand times. Or more like tired… the bags under his eyes told me he got little sleep, and he held a grumpy scowl.
“Does she have any pups?” asked Alpha sternly, still in pain, but too proud to lay down.
“The 2-year-old will go to foster care, to avoid further contact with Headhunters.” He said again, still in a monotoned voice.
She tried to bolt out the room but was stopped by the police. “Let me go! I want to see my son!” She growled, though it was human.
Kaiden sighed. “If he grew up with you, he would become a Headhunter, if he stayed with your family, the same result. This is done that he may never know the sting of being a ward of the law… I cannot release you, but he is at home with his freedom.” Said Alpha, his face serious.
“But this isn’t fair... I didn’t have anything to do with this.” She said horrified. “You sound like I’ll never see him again.” She said still struggling to get free.
Alpha nodded. “But even still, your fate was sealed. You have seen my form, and your husband has put me here, in a human hospital… You will be a prisoner, but you will not suffer. Your life is this way because of your husband’s choices… it’s a shame the innocent must suffer the consequences.” He heaved himself off the bed an took the keys from the officer.
“I want my son!” She yelled, still struggling, but I didn’t know how to feel about what I was watching… I never knew that this was the fate of those who broke the law… and had Headhunters been a legal group, that could have been us in cuffs.
“That’s enough.” Said the officer.
They escorted her to the car, and she sat in the backseat. It was quiet for a long time. She grew more and more afraid with every minute and I couldn’t help but feel bad for her…. She didn’t do anything, but her life was ruined by association. I had no remorse for the men that tried to take Alpha’s pelt. They ruined the lives of not only wolves, but every human that was around them. She was going to spend the rest of her life in prison, because of what they had been doing,
Alpha turned on the radio, so it wasn’t silent, and she was still tense. She silently cried, and I didn’t say anything, because I honestly couldn’t think of anything to tell her… Her life was ruined… she would never see her pack or pup again, and forever be a captive. Shimmer was glad that she was afraid, she wanted Alpha to eat her for causing trouble. She didn’t care that she was terrified, but I held sympathy. We silently argued, until I kept seeing the same black cars turn every time we did. They got off every exit we did, and it made me nervous.
“Those are the officers babygirl.” Said Kaiden flatly. The police escorted us out the city, and soon trees were the only thing seen.
“I’d tell you don’t worry, but your husband shot me with straight silver, and my wolf wants your blood.” He said it jokingly, but she took it literally. She tried jumping out the car, but he had the child lock engaged. “Calm down, I was trying to take the awkward out the air.” He paused. “I’m Alpha Kaiden, and this is my mate, Luna Eclipse.” He said calmly, though his eyes were turning red.
The human looked confused. “I would say ‘it’s nice to meet you’ but…I have lost everything. Family, my home, even my friends. How can you joke?” She said a little bitterly.
“I tried so that you would stop crying.” Alpha sighed. “It is the law.” He said with his voice calm, but his eyes were red… and they weren’t reflective. “It may hurt now, but your child will be cared for by good men. Men who don’t murder supernatural creatures for profit. Men who won’t get his family killed, and the rest sent to jail.”
“I had no idea they were doing that…” She said quietly defending them.
“But because of them, many families have had the same outcome as you see now. To get a wolf pelt of any value, one would have to burn an entire village, and kill its leader. You said he did it every year, well every year he killed an entire town of innocents for profit.” Said my mate.
“There were lots of times he didn’t come back with anything….” She said quietly, still defending them.
“Then those where years were they only killed a few innocents.” He retorted. “If you would have been home today, you would still have your son, but if your husband lived, he would be in your seat. No matter the outcome, the moment they engaged me, was a sentence on your heads.”
“Are you ok?” I asked him, it wasn’t like him to be so calm. It wasn’t like him to look so tired….
“I am still dying, but I should be ok as long as my liver doesn’t fail. I will get you to the pack.” Commanded Rakaam. His face was emotionless, and his eyes had only the faintest yellow to them. I could begin to recognize the smells of home. We crossed the territory line.
He said he was dying so calmly.
…. He smelled so much like metal too…. It made my head hurt.
His head kept nodding deeply, lower, then it would jump up, then lower again. He missed a turn in the slightly curved road, passing out and hitting a large tree. The airbags deployed, and I barely had time to grab Mrs. Peterson before she almost flew out the car. Thankfully she landed back in her seat, but I felt like I’d been hit with a ton of bricks.
I groaned loudly, the impact took the air out my chest, and Alpha lay knocked out, his face honking the horn. I tried waking him up, but he was too heavy to move. His breathing was heavy and uneven, I didn’t care about my scratches; I was going to be fine compared to him. “Let me out!” screamed Mrs. Peterson. I had grabbed her arm, because she was trying to run away.
“If you go out there, the warriors will kill you, just stay here with me.” I yelled. There was blood coming out his mouth, and his breath smelled like metal.
I heard howls of the Warriors, who came as swiftly as they could. All the while I still held Mrs. Peterson’s hand so she wouldn’t run. She looked at them in terror, while I was relieved they came. They shifted, cutting his seatbelt to get him out the car, while a gigantic wolf trotted full speed before sniffing Alpha.
[…. Oh, this looks bad.] Said Beta, looking nearly identical to Alpha except for his size. They slumped him over Beta Connor’s black furred back, and he ran to the infirmary.
I turned into my wolf as a few Warriors waited for me. It still took a while, but I needed to be by Alpha’s side. He’s always getting hurt, and this time it’s my fault. If I were stronger, I could have helped more. If I were braver… I could have found and used that gun…I just sat there scared in the car, watching him be attacked, until Shimmer took over. I had finally changed; I had ripped all my clothes not thinking about taking them off.
[What do we do with the human?] Asked a warrior, bowing his head to me. Honestly, I had no idea. She didn’t do anything wrong but letting her go hurts the pack. I already heard the story of our birth pack’s destuction from my father a million times.
[Is there a nice place she can be held? She didn’t actually do anything other than be at the wrong place at the wrong time.] I told him. He reverted to his human form, and commanded her to walk.
“I will place her in a holding cell, my Luna” he bowed again and pushed her to move.
