Book 2 Chapter 85

Heidi
His words held an unknown weight that I understood, but hoped would never happen… though I was reassured by the hand placed on my shoulder. He looked at me like grandfather, the Wolf King does: kind but kingly. He looked at me as you would your own child, and there was a comforting warmth from his clawed, black auraed hands.
“Worry not little one, as ones who cannot die, it would take the divine intervention of our creator to reap us, and at that point, it would have been because we’d done something that deserves such a punishment.” Said Gulteer.
“…. You two cheat death.” Said John.
“Death is our master’s son, and is above such a notion.” He said calmly. “We hold Blessings that allows us life eternal. We cannot die, nor can any other mortal caster prove better than we.”
“Interesting….” He said looking out the window.
“You are too young to be this troubled.” Said Gulteer. “You worry of your family, which is noble, but I know Ronitus. He is a formidable, magic resistant foe, hopefully he will accept my truce and be a formidable friend.”
“I worry as you know because I have inherited his enemies, and they are snakes. I worry that they will try and hurt my mate, even though she is the adopted blood of the King.” He said with a rough sigh.
“Your worries are warranted, but you should still relax. I won’t let anything happen to either of you. You are also worthy of your people’s legacy. You wouldn’t be able to wield the Gauntlets otherwise.” He said with a smile.
“I honestly don’t want them. With them comes trouble; I’d rather give them to my King and retire to my pack…. It’s my job to protect them too.” He said proudly.
He flicked him on the forehead. “It is Why You can. Your motives are home and your mate; any other would be akin to the latent desires I always have; domination and destruction. I am the First Witch, and with the blessings he gave me is the literal thirst for blood. I am stronger magically than all but the Master.”
We both nodded, understanding what he meant by that. “You could rule the witches then and take a seat at the council….” I said as a suggestion, and he immediately shook his head.
“I want nothing to do with the Kings’ Council. They and their blood are blinded by their unmerited hubris, not to mention that they go against my Master’s wishes.” He said with a small frown. It was his way of saying that he would do whatever was commanded, regardless of how the world would be impacted…. But he was created from the Horned One, and likely swore oaths to him, so that was expected.
“I’m glad there’s peace now.” I said with a small smile.
“I’m constantly unentertained now, but in a few decades I will have work from the young master. I can’t wait to start stripping the meat off the wicked again. I was ordered to stop because I did my job a little too well.” He said with a smile
“I feel like the next part of that story involves you torturing humans.” Said John, and he patted him on the shoulder.
“You are very good for my child.” He said leaning back in his seat, “There are as many ‘Good’ men as innocent. Knowledge of what happens to the terrible few keep the impressionable fence straddlers in line. My familiar flies outside as an escort. I’m going to rest a bit, you should too.” He said putting on eye blinds, ordering a glass of water. He’d accepted and drank it without looking, but I would decline. We could come across some random adversary in the sky. It would be unlikely, but I didn’t want to take any risks.
“That’s a good idea, but I think I would rather watch the clouds outside…” I said yawning even though I’d slept so I shouldn’t be tired…
“That wasn’t a request.” Said Gulteer. John growled with his yawn.
“What is this?” He demanded, passing out first.
“We are flying from the deepest part of Russia to the New Continent. Sleep. Me and my mate’s familiars fly outside as escorts.” He commanded, and before I could say anything, I too was asleep…
Why he did that so suddenly, I had no idea why, but I wished he didn’t. I still had questions, and he was the only man who would likely have answers.
To my surprise…. I only had peaceful, sound sleep. There was nothing sinister behind the rest that he commanded, at least nothing that I could feel. He was the strongest living witch as the first, so if he wanted to interrogate more, he honestly could have…
I woke up in the backseat of a van being driven by Garnet. The clock on the radio said 9pm, which meant we were out quite a while… It was a little disorientating to adjust myself to sit up, though the light pitter patter of the rain and the music on the radio helped a bit. They seemed to be deep in discussion, though I didn’t interrupt.
“…. If you don’t like pasta, we also made some roast wild boar I caught and aged myself. I smoked it before she put it in the oven, so it’s going to be tender enough to eat without a fork.” Beamed Garnet with pride.
“Then I look forward to the meal you have prepared. Little one, sit up; I know you are awake.” He chuckled. “Your mate will be soon; nonmagical creatures are very easy to sway.”
“Will he be ok?” I asked and he nodded.
“He’ll be groggy but fine. I wouldn’t hurt your mate unless he did something stupid.” Said Gulteer nonchalantly.
“… How long until we get to the packhouse?” I asked and Garnet chimed in.
“About 45 minutes Luna. Ann got dinner ready before I left.” He grinned.
“You have good people. I figured after what you both experienced, that you’d need rest but not get any.” Gulteer said with a small smile.
“We could have gotten a nap later…” I said seeing Rahraam panic, pulling on my sweater for me to be silent.
“Your bodies have been in too close in contact with the In-Between. Such a thing whittles at the body, especially the boy. He had to kill his brother too. Even though there was no attachment from what I was told, he’s still a wolf. They have unnaturally close relationships with family.” He said signaling his familiar who was a crow outside. Both he and his wife’s familiars were following the car.
“I agree with the old guy Luna…. You two have been gone days hunting down a criminal. There’s nothing better than coming HOME and relaxing a bit. It gets boring if you stay Too long, but right now I feel like I’m on vacation.” He said with a grin.
“I smell Garnet.” Said John. “How long was I out?” He asked with a yawn that held a growl to it.
“About 26 hours…. There was a bit of a layover in Lisbon.” Said Gulteer. “Rahraam will awake when you all arrive home. He was especially stressed being the son of my demon; he too will be fine.”
I nodded, feeling him asleep in my pocket, but he felt normal. The look on my mate’s face told me he wanted to argue, but I put my hand on his. Whatever it was that he did, was probably something he needed to do for his people, or should I say our?
“I needed to fetch my walking stick.” He said holding up a plain looking, old fashioned cane. It looked to be made of oak, and I could literally see the magic radiating off it. Why I didn’t smell that much magic though I had no idea why, but he likely got it from some hiding place.
“I assume that’s for protection.” Said John.
“You could say that. I’m alone in this world... Well, what I mean by that is that my wife nor children cannot conjure as I can. The enemies who’d love my head, or yours little one.” He said sticking his head out the window. “We should be fine. Meet us at their pack.” He said calmly.
“Do you sense something I don’t?” Asked Garnet, and he shook his head.
“At the moment, all but the priests know of my presence, but so long as I don’t do anything too magical, they’ll never find me.” He said with a small smile.
“I figured as much; you smell absolutely evil. It actually sets my wolf off.” Garnet said as he made a left turn, and Gulteer said nothing more, he only silently smiled like a little kid that had done something he shouldn’t.
It wasn’t long after his antics that we made it to the outskirts of the pack, and for it I was relieved that our trip was over, but a little weary of how they would accept someone like Gulteer. Garnet was right, but I had been around so many dark witches for long enough that I didn’t even notice it. He did, indeed smell almost as a villain would, yet I too created the scent.
But why wouldn’t I? I’d accepted the gifts of the Horned One, as well as the main family of his creations, being added to it and accepted without hesitation. I’d already been warned about the proverbial target on my back to all who work under the light, but I did it for my family, my pack, and my mate. I also did it for Me. I wanted this, and I held no hesitation getting out the car with John and the others.
I wanted to help, but everyone got our bags out the trunk. Everything was smooth until the officers of the pack came out the packhouse. Half were shifted, and half stood tall behind Alpha Ron, who looked stern.
“Halt.” Said Beta Isaac.
“Little wolves who wear pelts, need I remind you of my nature?” He said with a growl that sounded like that of a dragon.
“My second speaks my words. Take not a step closer, or I will remind you of Mine.” Said Alpha Ron.
“Ugh.” Said Rahraam with an explosive thump, ruining my jacket by his transformation, bursting out my pocket by shifting into a naked sleeping horned man. He sat on the ground and rubbed his eyes. “Are we there yet? I’m Hungry….” He asked.
“Yeah…” I facepalmed… everyone who didn’t know about him did now.
