Chapter 75

Connor
As my wolf, I was on patrol. Nothing unusual, I was doing a favor for Delta’s kid since her and Matthew were on vacation. I gave them time off, because they had had so much shit to do, seeing as how we were running 2 full sized, about 1,500 wolves a piece packs with one Alpha. Hopefully, the pups can take over Crimson in 200 years or so. Hopefully sooner in a few decades if they seem responsible enough.
I found an odd clearing in between the territories I had never seen before, but knew exactly where I was. I stopped in my tracks and stared. I didn’t believe it, but there it was in my face. A human smack dab in the middle of the pack... She looked like she was in her mid 20’s and had white hair and silver eyes, though her skin tone seemed to keep changing….. The moon was full tonight, and something told me not to attack this girl. She looked at me and began to hum. It sounded like a lullaby.
Holy shit. I thought to myself…. Did I see the Lady? I ran to the clearing, and the moonlight seemed to shine on just her, like a spotlight. I gulped…. Kaiden was cursed for breaking a law, what would she do to me if I made her upset? I kneeled. I felt a pat on my head, and I flinched. She hummed the song as it seemed to fade away.
My alarm went off. Fuck, I already did patrol last night… “Connor, are you ok?!” Screamed Nancy in my ear, blowing my fucking brains out. I laughed to play it off that my ears were still ringing.
“Sorry… I had a weird dream about the Pale Lady… she hummed this tune.” I couldn’t remember it…. it was right on the tip of my tongue.
“Well as long as you’re ok….” She said quietly and I kissed her on the cheek.
“I’ll be back later Nanners.” I said seeing her huff. I got ready and went upstairs to tell Kaiden to wake is ass up, it was time to plan for the Lunar festival tomorrow. We rented some rides, there would be top security, and the LemonMoon Pack would come as visitors, because both packs pitched in to rent rides.
I heard them kissing, it wasn’t serious, but I know what I was about to do would put anyone else in the hospital. I beat the door like it’s a shakedown, to hear a snarl from my brother’s wolf. “Who dares?!” He growls.
“Eat shit and get your ass in that office.” I playfully snarled. I heard a lot of shuffling, clothing sounds, and before he gets to the door, I’m already in his office. I turned on his coffee maker he put in there, since these offices are honestly our second bedrooms, and pour him a cup.
Rakaam was not amused, but choose to seek peace. He usually does. He doesn’t like to fight Titus, and I just like to mess with my brother. Eclipse had the babies in either hand, leading them to the downstairs. “You could have just texted.” Growled my brother.
“Yeah, and you would be working on your 4th pup right now.” I laugh.
“Shut up!” He shouted embarrassed, which only made me laugh harder.
I reached over his desk, and grabbed the festivities manilla folder. The last thing we needed to plan was the bonfire. It was the most important. We were to give the Lady her offerings and prayers for the year, an ancient tradition that spanned as far back as when wolves first shifted to human forms.
I pointed on the map where the clearing was in my dream. “No. it will be too far away from the rides.” He commanded firmly.
“I cannot accept that, Alpha.” He growled a real growl before I could finish. I sighed, “Can I finish?” I ask
“No.” He had taken offence. Great.
I took a deep breath and grabbed both sides of his face so he could look at me. His eyes went red. He was either going to attack me or listen. He hadn’t made his mind up at this point.
“Alpha, my brother Let. Me. Finish. Please.”
He was silent.
“Have you had any dreams?” I ask honestly.
“No.” He said bluntly. That figures, he was cursed.
I took a deep breath. “THIS is the spot for the bonfire, says the Pale Lady herself.” I point. “So if you want to fight me, we can take it outside, but I will put sticks there and do it myself.” I say convicted.
He leaned back in his chair, and looked at the ceiling. He was fighting Rakaam. “If you touch my face again, I’m slamming your head in the table.” He said with a smile.
“If you can catch me.” I smirk. Working with him is always like this I thought. “And speaking of pups, grandfather faxed the adoption papers himself, you have another daughter.”
“Why didn’t you tell me that first?” He said, full of pride.
“I wanted to piss you off first. Congratulations.” I laughed, getting up, and giving him a firm pat on the back.
I went back to my office, and I lived in there with my mate and my pup until it was time for bed. We took turns with all the invoices, and Luna brought her pups to play with Jason while the adults were all bored out of our minds. When I got done, I crashed on my bed and fell asleep instantly. I heard the tune again, and still couldn’t remember….
When I got up, it was already noon, and the festivities were already ready. It started at 2, and I wasn’t needed until the lighting of the bonfire. Kaiden figured since he offended the Lady, and she gave Me the dream, maybe I should light it. He was right, I guess? There was never a problem with the festival, but no one had ever had a dream about it either that I know of.
We had the rides running and the music booming. They had food stands and we had ordered horses from the supernatural rentals. These knew what we were and wouldn’t spook like when we were younger. Kaiden had come up with most of this from his travels to the King’s court. I had never seen him talk about something so enthusiastically before, other than our mates, pups, killing, or hunting.
I rode the rides with Eclipse, while the easily seasick Alpha watched the pups with my mate. He didn’t want her to be alone after what happened 3 weeks ago, and I was more than happy to let the little squirt be happy. She squealed and I laughed, making Kaiden jealous because he knew he would throw up, and he didn’t want to look weak in front of the pack or pups. He always has. His wolf just can’t take the abuse.
The moon had finally peeped out, and we all howled that it was a clear night. I gave Kaiden his mate, and I held mine close. We had a little more time to be with each other. Nancy didn’t like rides, so we walked around, and she petted the horses. I won the ring toss, which was rigged, and got her a stuffed bear that she gave to Jason. It was bigger than he was. I slid the carnival guy $50 and a wink when my mate wasn’t looking.
/I got the bonfire going/, Common linked Shelly, meaning the entire pack heard.
When the moon was in the center of the sky, I closed my eyes and listened on the wind. I swear I almost heard that tune again in my head. Everyone got silent, and they shut the music off. The crowd was enormous, and I didn’t feel nervous, I was excited. Nancy held my hand, and I boomed my voice as loud as any Alpha.
“Brothers and sisters blessed by the moon, hear me. One and all, tonight is a night for not only fun, but also for veneration of the Pale Lady Moon. The Goddess has blessed us all, young and old, with mates, strength, and community. I was given the honor of the first prayer by Alpha, the big furball.” There were a couple snickers. “Yet I have no prayer. I have a song. One that I heard on the wind, and in my dreams.”
Everyone was silent. I was given a piece of paper, and I put a little blood on it, letting go of Nancy’s hand… this is meant to be done alone. “Thank you for my mate, pups, and pack.” I whispered, I tossed it in the fire, and watched it slowly burn. I began to hum the tune from my dream, and the wind picked up. The fire turned white, and I felt the Lady pat my head. I saw Kaiden put his hand on the top of his, so she must have done something to him too, and I looked up at the moon.
Everyone seemed to have been patted by her as they tossed in their prayers. I wished mom or dad was around to see this, they would have known what this meant. They died after I was born, so I have no attachment to them…. I don’t even remember their faces. I was told that I was only a few days old when they died, and when I shut my eyes tight, no matter how hard I try, even though I’ve seen their photos, I see a stressed-out Shelly and Eric.
They are the faces I see when I think of my ‘parents’ because it was her who raised me… He was too weak to stop us if we misbehaved, but he gave us morals. We learned to be actually decent people because of him, even though he is an Omega… It still boggles my mind that in any other pack, he would be mistreated because of his lack of ability to shift… I wouldn’t be who I was without his council. He would give us talks about power, and just because we were stronger than the entire pack at a young age, didn’t mean that we should abuse it. Everyone had their place, and everyone was happy doing what they could for the pack. I snapped from my thoughts to the sounds of kissing couples everywhere.
There would be many more pups made tonight, though, from all the wolves that didn’t with the Luna. I chuckled to myself, looking at the white fire blaze, getting a firm pat on my shoulder from my brother holding a beer.
