Chapter 62

Kaiden
I walked to the back of the festival, past all the rides, and saw him sitting with a human in his lap. How quaint. I hesitated, he smelled like he had lived long, and had ample power. His skin had almost no color, his hair was completely white, and his eyes were a piercing, uncomfortable ice blue.
I had no idea how tall his mate was, but she was miniature compared to him. She was definitely human, with dark brown hair, hazel eyes, and tan skin. I walked up to them. He seemed to stiffen his posture, nervous that I was eyeing the brunet woman. “Why have you revealed us to the humans? Do you not realize the danger you have put your pack in?” I tried to keep my voice calm, but I ended up growling anyway.
“I haven’t exposed anything neighbor, what you see IS the pack. We have coexisted with humans here so long, that the town, as well as the pack, are one.” He said with a smile. “The goddess gave me Susanna many… many millennia ago, and blessed this rare occurrence in this area that we do not feel left out.” I almost didn’t believe him when he said he was that fucking old, but then I realized that grandfather along with most of the council seats have been around as long as humans have lived in towns. Rakaam was silent to my genuine surprise.
“Why are you not on the council?” I interrogate. Eclipse continued to eat her corndog, completely innocent, and walked to the human woman and started talking. I would say I was surprised, but honestly, I wasn’t. There was no hostility in the air, nor did either of us threaten. For Rakaam to suddenly behave and not fake it, meant that I should be careful, but I did not show my hesitation.
“I gave it to Brutus,” He snapped, losing his calm demeanor for a moment. “However, the Lady was not so cruel as the King’s Council. If your mate is mortal, marking them joins your souls, and they live as long as you do. Those humans there are essentially Omegas without wolves.” He waved his hand, motioning all the happy, smiling faces.
I was dumbstruck. I didn’t have anything to say, because I didn’t think such a thing was possible. “My Prince, please enjoy yourself, you may also rest in my packhouse. I know you live in an area full of hostility with humans, as much as the rest of us, however here is sanctuary, for I maintain it with my power.” He let out a cold breath you could see. It wasn’t cold enough for that, this was unnatural, and I took a step back on instinct. Shit. I cursed myself. He had caused me to submit….
I was about to say no, when I felt a small hand placed in mine. “Kaiden, this is Susana, she knows your grandma!” I was shocked she had done such a thing, but I could expect nothing less from babygirl. Even after what the humans had done, she was willing to open her heart to one.
“Good evening, Charred One.” She shook my hand.
“I’m Alpha Kaiden… good evening.” I hesitantly said, it was so foreign to shake this way. Would I break her small hands? I thought. She seemed genuinely happy to meet me, and this was the first positive interaction I’ve ever had with a human. /Why does this one not smell like food?/ Asked Rakaam. I had no answer, she smelled somewhat wolfish on closer inspection.
Phillip laughed, and I glared at him. After that awkward introduction, I was ready to leave. “Go, have fun with your mate, Kaiden!” He chuckled amused. Eclipse dragged me to the rides.
I got to see close up the pups of these humans and wolves living in the same town. They smelled weaker than a usual pack, but they were genuinely happy. I doubt a true ancient would allow bullying of the weaker pack members, just as I didn’t with Omegas, as each wolf is important.
I was also being selfish, as I know if I caught anyone disrespecting my sister’s mate, there would be blood. Eric is a good guy. As an Omega, I am positive he wasn’t treated right in his home pack. He never talked much about before Shelly but there was a strange phenomenon that happened with us of ancient blood. We would not be so petty as to worry about rank and power if a wolf had none. This was especially so in the castle, as every servant of my grandfather was an Omega. A normal pack wolf would not be able to withstand the constant passive aura he emitted, just as babygirl had to get used to mine.
“I want to go on the Gut Buster!” She squealed excitedly, breaking me from my thought. I looked at the tall roller coaster, that had a loop to it…. I didn’t say anything, I just smiled at her. I got so sick, but played it off. “Oh my Lady, They have a Dead Drop!” She clapped.
/Oh Fuck/…. whined Rakaam, looking up at the sheer drop ride.
I groaned internally in agreement, and got on with her. She screamed in enjoyment on the Twirl-a-Whirl. I held onto the safety bars for dear life, my guts screamed ‘no’ with every spin. I had had it after that. The moment we got off, I found a trashcan and she laughed at me. Rakaam was dizzy, and couldn’t keep his balance, which made my now empty stomach do flips. She held my hand, and dragged me to another food cart. That she could still eat made me question who was the Alpha ‘round here.
I got some water, she got a turkey leg, and we walked holding hands. The sun had already gone down, and I looked down at her happy, smiling face, our trash already binned. “Thank you Alpha,” she almost whispered, looking back at me. I held her hand tighter, I wanted to kiss her, but I didn’t for obvious reasons.
Then I saw her crane her neck up to stand on her tip toes, I leaned down, and she kissed me on the cheek. She then put her arms around my neck. She found her way to my mouth and I picked her up. We kissed in the middle of the walkway, and I felt like the luckiest wolf in the world. This was worth the risk, I didn’t know what would happen tomorrow, but for now, she was willing to just be with me.
In my lost thoughts, and that kiss, I smelled rain. Soon after, I felt water on my head. It had suddenly decided to storm. I ran with the other wolves, and humans, to the dryness of the packhouse. Following them was easy enough, seeing as how if it weren’t for the trees, I might have been able to see it from their makeshift fairgrounds. She giggled the whole way, and I laughed like an idiot, carrying her. It was a large brown brick home with a green tin roof. I didn’t question the poor color choice, but I could only assume it was to hide it better in the forest.
Inside, Phillip was nice enough to let us use his guest room to dry off. He gave us clothes, so we didn’t have to run out in the rain. I let babygirl shower first, and I decided to speak more with the ancient. I followed his scent of juniper into his office, where he sat with his human mate in his lap. I can only assume for her protection, also… it does feel nice to have your mate so close while you work.
“Why aren’t you on the council, really?” I blurted. The man smelled stronger than Brutus, grandfather’s third. Honestly, I don’t think that grandfather would care about his mate, since he would not question the Lady. “Susanna would always be in danger. Not from the King, but those who would want my place. Brutus would not BE on the council, yet he sits at his left, in my stead.” He said with a growl, his blue eyes turning white momentarily.
“I would have just killed him.” I blurted bluntly.
“Yes, but then who would keep her safe from those loyal to him? There are many games afoot in the court, young prince.” He said flatly, and held his mate closer. “The smallest twitch, a single accident, and my mate would be dead. I would remain here in exile until the end of days, if it meant I could spend a moment more with her.” He held her closer still, and she put a hand on his cheek.
Now that I have a mate, I can understand this. I have bled, killed, almost died, and would die for my babygirl. I would sacrifice anything if it meant she was safe… what’s a title with no one to share it with? “I understand now. Thank you for having us, we’ll be gone by dawn.” I say flatly, with a small nod. This alerted my wolf, but he did not retort what I had done.
“Please stay at least for lunch, I insist. Tell me of your travels, and why you are so far from home. I miss the talks with your father, he was a good man.” He said with a sad smile.
“I’ll think about it.” I grunted, and hurriedly walked out his office. The vibes that man gives off reminded me of grandfather now that I thought about it. It would most likely cause me and my wolf to fight again, but we were going to do that anyway.
