Book 2 Chapter 84

Hi! I’m sorry it took so long to come back, but I needed to find myself… last year was not good for me, especially the end of it. I won’t put the chapters that I wrote during that time on here, because I didn’t like them. I hope you all enjoy these as much as I enjoyed writing and liking my work again. If you ask I’ll tell you, but I’m not really sure if I should put it up here.

We were in the backseat of Gulteer’s car on the way to the airport. His wife stayed behind to insure the coven’s safety, while he drove. No one had said anything on the long drive for about an hour. We’d postponed leaving about a day, so they could finish warding the coven and do some general business. Since it was Lady Tiffany’s magic that originally made the barrier and that was gone, he figured the magic of his daughters was too weak because they weren’t as old.
Rahraam quietly slept in my pocket, while John looked out the window. I did too, but the other side. The silence was comfortable, and the trees held the occasional shifter. Here it seemed that bear shifters ruled, as they were everywhere. They were double the size of the average bear, but even that wasn’t the size of the wolves in the In-between…. Grendel was enormous…. And I wondered why he wasn’t the one ruling here… My only guess was that he was tasked with the guarding of that place…
In the supernatural world the older someone is, usually the stronger they get, and for him being the first wolf, he was as strong as it got. Gulteer was no different, being the first witch. Through him there was probably countless spells that only he knew of, along with magical concepts that are lost to other covens. He interrupted my inner monologue with a small chuckle.
“You sound almost as if those very concepts aren’t tucked away in your study bag. But I must also warn you now that I think of it little one, that you should be cautious wherever you go. Once you start experimenting, others will become jealous of that growth. When you leave the old places and mingle with mortals especially, you carry the scent and aura of darkness. We are the original natural enemies of the Light, being created by the Adversary himself…but also know we are the tightest knit of all the witches. Because we are so hated and feared even by other witches, that another Dark Witch will readily aid you if ever you need. With my mark you carry my blood, and with my might I can come to you if you call.” He said with a small smile.
“I actually encountered the Church once when I was young…” I said thinking of the time when my Uncle Connor picked me up from the airport, and we had to deal with priests…
“I imagine so. Hunters, the Church, even witches who kneel to other gods hate us, but unlike your shifter husband… your flesh is akin to a mortal’s. I am cast from the harsh clay of Tartaron, as too are my wife and kin, but you are in the flesh of less… and it pains me to see this. It pains me to know that something as simple as a bullet could stop your growth.” He said the last part quietly.
“I will protect my mate with my life; don’t worry about her.” Said John confidently.
“That I know, but I still don’t hold trust in the wolves…. They side with the Light in regards to this world…. And this world is changing. Change makes usually sound people make unsound decisions to keep things as they are…” He said making a turn off the snow covered road.
“Why did you do that?” Asked John, a little alert.
“This time of year, Hunters come out searching the snow for tracks to find my children. This direction leads to the den of the Babas you killed. Hopefully my wife’s magic was enough to bury the rest that they cannot follow, and they will see this path appear from nowhere and find nothing.” He said with a small smile, though off road, even with magic, the ride was very bumpy. I could see that behind us no sign of the road was seen. It all looked oddly like forest, and This was the actual road.
“But if they find nothing of substance, they will continue to look.” Said John.
“Yes, but I’ve left wards to prevent them from getting close. At best, they will get lost and run in circles, so even if they found the bear pack, they won’t be able to pinpoint anything. This should be close enough. They may be dead, but I assume even they had enough sense to properly ward their coven.” He said snapping his fingers and a portal appeared in front of the car. He drove through the red portal, and we came out the other side behind an abandoned building.
“I’m going to be sick.” Complained John, and Gulteer turned to look at us.
“You’ll be fine.” He turned back to driving. “It’s either this or another 3 hours of going the long way on bumpy makeshift roads and almost an empty tank.” He retorted, blending his car in with traffic. I hadn’t seen this part of the town, but I knew we were close to the airport, because I could scent it.
As we got closer, I had a question for him too, but I didn’t ask. I wondered how did those two blend in when they went to human populated areas…. his eyes did Not look human, and her complexion was that of a vampire…. I know he’d heard me, because he answered, regardless to the necklace I had on to prevent prying. Tourmaline doesn’t work on someone like him, or the Wolf King, but I had nothing to hide anyway.
“We don’t change ourselves for men; the men change their vision for us.” He said like an Alpha would, and I had to admit he kind of smelled like one the more I thought about it.
“So you dominate their senses?” Asked John and he nodded.
“The aura we emit fools their minds, even priests, but they know it’s bewitching. The power of me and my wife comes from domination and power. Even when it comes to hiding, we hide by dominating the senses to the point that they see what would be more comforting, a man, not the Horned One’s left pinky.” He joked.
“What if someone is resistant?” I asked.
“They won’t be.” He said matter-of-factly.
We rode in silence another 20 minutes, and he parked at the airport. He walked as if he owned the place, yet I could see the buff troll security guards on their walkies speaking Russian. As we walked, one, then two of those security guards trailed behind us, as if they were escorts. They walked us past the clearance and bag checking area straight to the private jet that they had already running.
We got on, but I was honestly a little unsurprised that he held so much sway in the supernatural world. He was the First witch, and with that came not only his title of Darkened One, but also knowing all the kings. They likely were already paid by him in exchange for safe passage.
The goblins ran the airports, busses, and other forms of transportation, but during the war they worked both sides of the war. Ultimately, they sided with the Wolf King when it came clear that the Night would lose, but even then, they made deals with all parties.
Whoever had money, gems, or political gains were fair game. Though they were honorable with whatever deal they made. Goblins did not betray, nor did they cheat. Whatever deal they had with you, was what they would do to the letter, and nothing less.
The plane took off, and it was only then did Gulteer respond to my inner monologue.
“It is because of their King.” Said Gulteer. “I remember his father, and he was known for being fairly dishonest, or he’d find loopholes. But Hadeon, no, he is honest… well as honest as they can get. You can trust that one.” he chuckled.
“But what of the other kings?” Asked John.
“…. At this moment I am not sure… the Master’s sons stir… and only time will tell if they will kneel to the ruler of the realm, or try to defy him again.” He said as if he were thinking out loud. “Remember what I said. We Must side with the Lord of Night, we are his children, blessed by his Power and Strength….” He said looking out the window. “May he give my daughter succor. May he give her a little mercy…. I’ve seen what he does to those who defy him…”
“He will not punish her forever though…. He may be a harsh god, but he is not cruel to his own.” I said quietly to try and reassure him. From what I’d seen, the Horned One wasn’t necessarily BAD but he had done Terrible things in the name of trying to save his mate….
“I know.” He sighed. “Her death though makes me miss her. My hope is that she is born through you, to live again and unite the new blood within our coven.” He said quietly.
“…. Why is that important?” I asked. It seemed all the older people wanted me to have pups.
He smiled. “It’s important because the ‘pup’ you birth will be either a full witch or a full-blooded wolf. The Master was never one to share. I can tell you are half wolf only because the Night Mother probably asked… night witches, no matter their lineage, are almost always all witch if the Master claims them.” He said as if I should have already known that.
“That’s interesting…” Said John.
“Indeed, it is.” Said Gulteer. “This is the first time I’ve ever met one of ours this way, but she is my grandchild all the same; the soul is more important anyway. And while we have you, I wish for you to know our side of the war.”
“The only thing I know is that Queen Xi died to give birth to her daughter, the current Queen because she fought the High King while heavily pregnant.” I said quietly. He scoffed.
“I hold no pity for her nor her line; they defied the will of the master, and by his hands was she felled. She also died because she tried tapping into our Master’s power to use against his own son. That is one secret that should not leave this plane, though you have a right to this knowledge. We were the Master’s hands in this world, and with them we killed many… both mortal and supernatural alike.” Said Gulteer.
We were silent and allowed him to talk. Rahrraam remained a rat, though he too was listening.
“And we were to aid the Master’s sons in search of the key to the Pale Lady’s realm. He didn’t care about himself; his plan was to have the Night Queen escape and come to him, then The Horned One could use his power to release himself…. the only thing holding him in Tartaron, is her imprisonment.”
“I don’t understand…. Why hasn’t he released himself if he’s so strong?” Asked John.
“Should he break his lock and go after her, she Will die before he can save her from the Light’s realm…. I was his left hand in this world. The innocent, the children, the unborn, the slave, the kings of this land were slain; It Did Not Matter. I rode my winged she demon Nanemous without worry of who screamed underneath. All who do not carry the Master’s mark are fodder.” He said matter of factly. “We were to destroy his enemies, no matter who they were. Xi made the mistake of making a deal with my master, then Spit in his face by siding with Them.” He sneered.
We were silent. The vision I held of what he’d done made me actually sick, but he continued while patting my back like a doting grandfather.
“But that time is over now; and my mission is to secure that You breathe. How my children fit in His plans matters not. What matters is that you are very gifted, and I will reward you with my most guarded secret; only four people now will know this, including me; Titafina is my soul bound mate, so I understand his plight. We are the only pure witches that have such a connection blessed by the Night Queen, if only for us to understand Master’s way of thinking. As I am, if anything happened to my dearest wife, no one would be safe. I would not care who is innocent or guilty…. I would not care what I would have to do to get her back, or to bring her back from the dead, breaking the natural laws….”
