Chapter 85

Connor
Heidi it seemed was already playing with fire, not knowing that everyone else around her could get burned. I knew the boy meant well, but right now, the last thing I needed was for my brother frothing at the mouth that his little girl smelled like male.
He walked into my office and peeped his head in the door, smelling of sand. I motioned for him to sit, and he sat without questioning me. He wasn’t scared until he saw me, and I guess that was to be expected. No one wants to see Alpha or Beta. You see us when there’s a problem, but he couldn’t help that the problem was literally him existing in the same space as my little niece.
“So, explain to me why you took it upon yourself to drive my niece home, after I already gave you and the other Jr Warriors instructions on calling me if she needed anything?” I say calmly, he was blessed by the Lady herself and all the gods above that my brother wasn’t up. I almost chuckled out loud to myself.
“She’s my mate sir…. I meant no disrespect.” He said, showing his neck. I took a deep breath; I was just as happy for her as I was concerned. The pup smelled like sand and fresh soil. I only knew one bloodline that smelled as such. I leaned back in my chair. Titus growled in my head, and I had to shut him out.
“Do you know your bloodline boy.” I question.
“…. I don’t know, mom always told me that I came from warriors.” Said the boy. I figured the files would be forged, so I just shot the King’s Second an email. There were only 4 known ancient lines, and each one had its own elemental blessing from the Lady herself.
I sighed. “Well for now pup, I suggest you take a shower and wash your clothes, I’ll talk to Kaiden. Until then, do not give her any rides home again.” I tell him sternly.
He left out the office like a Warrior, but I could see the sadness in his eyes, telling him to be away from his mate was like telling him to go die, but I had to maintain peace and order... there would be none if the Luna or Alpha smelled Heidi on his clothes.
“Good luck with telling that dumbass anything...” Said Shelly. It wasn’t that she didn’t like the kid, it was that each line had its own lands, and our lines were not to mix.
I nodded in agreement, I already had my hands full with the border, and the prison, the Alpha Frank guy wanting another fight with me, and now this kid just so happens to show up. I was stressing out of my mind. I needed a break. I sat in my office for about 20 minutes, before taking it. I put on my running shoes, and found my mate talking with Eclipse, and I kissed her on the cheek, letting her know I was going for a run.
I ran the trails, and people started calling me Alpha… and I didn’t like it. It meant that they thought that I was their leader now. I was not, but wolves need a leader like we need air to breathe. This was too uncertain for people that their Alpha was sick with an illness that couldn’t be explained. It had not been long, but people thought Kaiden was dead. He really wasn’t, all they had to do was go upstairs, and they would hear his snoring as his wolf.
I’m taking off when he gets up.
I smelled fresh coffee on the wind, and there was a little coffee shop actually pretty close to the packhouse. I had often felt curious about the place but never had the time, or lied to myself that I didn’t. Why not now? I had only been gone 30 minutes, I thought. The shopkeeper was friendly enough and gave me a free slice of cake. He did not know that now this would be my favorite place. There was cake. Where there is cake, there is Beta. It is law.
After I dusted the crumbs off myself, I pretended to run up the hill, like I had broken a sweat, and opened the door. I went to check on everyone, it was all how I left it, except Heidi. She prayed to the Lady over my brother. I left to let her have some privacy and worked in my room, laying on my bed, doing the shit that Kaiden couldn’t do after I finished my work load. I was tired, and agitated.
When the sun rose, it was raining hard with lightning. I still wasn’t done, but I still took Heidi to school, and stopped by that coffee shop for a break. He was already up, open, and I got the freshest cup of coffee I think could be made. He was so happy; it boosted my pretty sour mood.
“Have a great day Beta, I hope Alpha gets better!” He said cheerfully. “And tell that pipsqueak I said ‘hey’ and to call her father more.” He said with a chuckle.
I let out a small laugh, it was good to know that the Luna still spoke with old friends. The rain wasn’t letting up. I made a mental note to pick Heidi up since she left her broom at home, but for now, I had more shit to do.
I went to the prison as my wolf, and smelled like wolf when I got there. My wet hair, being a Beta smelled much stronger than anyone there, and the clothes I carried in my mouth were wet. I sighed, getting a pair of shorts from the receptionist. I put the misbehavers in line, which was so much easier without someone like Bryson in here.
I walked down the halls, head high and chest puffed. Everyone bowed to me, and it swelled Titus’s head. He was legitimately happy playing Alpha, but I was not. This shit is so tiring, I just wanted my mate and a nap right now, but when I got home, I still had to contact Delta to make sure that payroll for the 15th was ready. That was easy to do, but it would be so time consuming to check all these businesses by myself. Shelly was helping, but there was only so much she could do.
A stocky, but short male was in the front of his cell, not submitting. I sighed. I shot him a glare that could carve stone, but he continued to stare. His eyes were orange with his wolf, and he paced now, glaring back with the same intensity. I had had about enough of this. He wants to fight, let him. I thought. I growled aggressively, and he responded with a snarl of dominance.
I was actually pretty pissed. Of course, I would have a challenge right when I was about to leave. He was no match for me, only about 6’2. He could see the height difference as a human, why would he challenge me? “Let him out.” I said with a growl.
They let him out, and we circled, “I want out this place.” He snarled like a caged animal.
“You are here until Alpha releases you.” I growl with the same intensity.
“I have been here 19 Years. You bastards stole the time from me seeing my son. My mate is only fuck knows where, because of your ‘Alpha’. I challenge to return home… wherever it is….” He lunged at me as a human, with a shiv.
I dodged, and pushed him to the ground, pinning his arms behind his back. “I would have let you fight it out, but not as a dirty cheat.” I growl in his ear.
I disarmed him and we put him back in the cell. When I turned to walk away, I felt a stabbing pain in my back. He had another weapon, and no one had frisked him. Damn it hurt pulling out the blade. It wasn’t very big, and he didn’t hit anything important, but I was livid. It took everything I had not to kill him then and there, but the guards got hold of him and presented him to me. They held his arms, expecting me to behave like my brother.
I stood there, looking at him in anger, holding back Titus. “Give him 20 lashes and a week in solitary, after that I might look into his story.” I say firmly. Everyone seemed to be shocked. The guy wanted me to kill him, but letting him live was probably a better punishment.
I sighed and had to get a guard to drive me home, because it just would hurt too much. When I got home, Nancy fussed over it, but I really was fine, I just needed a shower and a nap, but there was no point. If I went now, I would only get about 40 minutes to myself. I went to check on my brother after my shower and I sat in a chair doing pack business. I would have to pick up Heidi soon, if my eyes wouldn’t stop closing. I was so tired, but hopefully the nap my body forcibly took wasn’t too long.
