Chapter 33
Zayde
She rested under the bearskin blanket, and I watched the snow hit the forest floor. The sun was rising, and with it came reality. Last night we had a chance to snuggle and be intimate… Today I would have more duties to attend.
My apprentice should be resting. Casey took quite a bit of blood from him before he was turned. His mortal blood is behimoth blood now, and his witch blood could now shine. He will be able to reach his true potential now, not be thwarted by priest’s blood.
People still talked about that too…
His great grandmother brought the HIGHEST shame to her house. The gossip will trail them until the end of their lives, and follow their children…. Though being surrounded by witches, I know his siblings will likely marry other witches. Jekels are too high a house for someone not to jump at the opportunity if offered… I wouldn’t be surprised either if a lower house offers their second and third born kids to raise their family’s status.
Even with priest blood, and the short life that comes with their mortal condition, their children won’t be. The children of his siblings will be half witch, and likely immortal. To be fair, it didn’t matter. I won’t be here in this coven to see how that progresses.
They are also not my charges, but I know father wouldn’t allow hardship to befall any of them. They’re healers after all. No matter the bloodline or ability, that kind of magic gives them respectability. The rest of his family are being trained to be magical doctors, while his father rides a broom before dawn and after sunset to the mortal farm. And most importantly, they are recognized by the master with his mark….
The same goes for my red blooded mate… She has no idea how addicting her flavor sits on the tongue… Better than any flesh, more tempting than a siren, more alluring than any succubus… If I’m not careful, I’ll make her fat with child. No, children.
I chuckled evilly to myself.
I opened the door for the cleaners. The sheepish fox shifters were the single tailed kind. They were a couple who lived in a den out here, and tended the outer grounds of me and my siblings. We all had our own small shacks out here when we needed alone time, or in my case, when I needed to do private rituals. This was another place where I brought my hand caught men to dress. It was grizzly, but none had to see me do my dirty workings most times.
“My lord is there anything else you’d like?” Asked the male.
“If my wife wakes before I come back, let her know my broom is in the closet.” I said growing wings.
I still need to work on my landings, but instincts aided me in doing so. It was still early, but Atto already had word of my large order. My wallet was in my back pocket, but to be sure I went home anyway. I half imagine he’d want cash for that many people. I had gold.
I half crash landed through my bedroom window, breaking my coffee table, but under my bed was a chest of gold. I grabbed a coin purse that could hold about a million Euro’s worth, and lamented that I put my foot in my mouth.
A mortal costs about 10 grand… and I ordered 100…. He was doing me a favor too with a discount, since whole living ones cost more… but I only needed the hearts and souls.
He could keep everything else.
“My lord would you like your car readied. I doubt it will fair well if you’re seen.” Bowed Mrs. Cornwall. She must have heard me break the table….
“Aye.” I said putting on a suit with magic. “Tell the couple they will be accompanying me.” I said glancing over my shoulder.
“I will have them in the car.” she bowed. The boy would still be asleep. I did that so he wouldn’t wake and attack anyone, but the girl will need a UV protection blanket.
Casey was just a fledgling. The sun won’t outright kill her, but by now it should burn her pretty badly… The light would melt her to the bone, and I’d rather my car not have melted vampire ashes stuck in my leather.
I went downstairs, and Casey was in the backseat with her future husband. They’d get married before we left this country, but for now I needed to get the ball rolling on his transformation and the control of it.
“Does he really need to … eat the hearts of so many people?” She asked when I got in.
“Yes, and you’re a man eater as well. You won’t be able to live without blood. It’s partly why we’re making a man farm as well.” I said firmly. I reached in the backseat and put the blanket they gave her over her head. “Don’t let the sun touch you. It’ll be a few years before you’re able to go out.”
“Yes sir.” She mumbled.
The drive was pretty quiet, but I could get it. She was human before this…. Her new people at best saw humans as pets or toys… at worst, just food.
“I know it’s a hard transition, but you’ll be set alight.” I said as I pulled into Atto’s driveway. “Ultimately, it’s what divides us from them. We live for eternity, though for some of us there is a condition to it… for witches like me, it’s the consumption of flesh, for vampires, it’s blood, for werewolves, they have the Crave curse, undead need brains… The list goes on and on. There are *plenty* who don’t too, but they understand…. Mortals don’t.”
“Why would we…. They…” She mumbled. “They don’t want to be food or toys… I’m not stupid or blind either. I understand.”
I picked up Micael, and Atto was chopping wood.
“Morning. I didn’t expect you to come back so soon little one.” He smiled wide. He came over and petted her head like a doting father. “You look hungry.” He bit his wrist.
“I couldn’t sir.” She looked ravenous, but he chuckled.
“You won’t; there’s a difference.” He countered. “Drink some of mine so you don’t have to use a damn blanket.”
She hesitantly did as she was told, and she became a little paler. “Isn’t that better?” He asked.
“It’s the first time I’ve felt full since waking.” She admitted.
“Unfortunately, that’s part of the downside of our kind. We are never truly sated in anything we do. This even spreads to other parts of our lives like hobbies and such… But you learn to be satisfied enough.” He smiled gently. I think Atto was one of the few vampires that retained that part of his humanity…
It would explain why his facility as big as it was, ran like a well oiled machine.
I followed him below, and now that I knew where things were down there. All of that was revealed to me. So long as I knew about it, the magic of this place couldn’t blind me.
“I’m surprised you didn’t complain about the anesthesia laced silverware.” He sounded almost giddy about it.
“It would do no good… plus you healed my neck so well that I have no scars.” I said truthfully.
“You can thank your behimoth blood for that.” He said leading me to the elevator. It kind of just …appeared. “This is the one that goes to floor 7…. My playground.”
I didn’t like how he worded that, but that floor needed a key for access… And I could see why. He was being literal. It was green down here with artificial UV lighting… they were growing tons of marijuana…. Literal tons of it. The field down here stretched as far as the eye could see.
It made me wonder how big this place was… he’d never tell me…
“….. did my father dig this out for you?” I asked.
“The simple of it is yes, now stop being nosy and wake the young man.” He encouraged. “I haven’t seen this magic, and I’m curious.”
“Alright.” I put a hand on the forehead of Micael, and I let his eyes open before I put him down. I let him get his bearings, since at first he still thought we were in the arena. He calmed on seeing his girlfriend though.
“Fetch me the 100 humans Arthor.” Said Atto, but I didn’t see anyone down here besides us 4….
Yet… someone definitely said ‘yes sir’. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a vampire down here
It only took a few minutes. They brought them down in 5 groups of 20, and Micael knew…
“Those are for me, aren’t they?” He asked. His eyes were reptilian.
“You need their hearts and souls. I’m surprised you can control yourself…. At all.” I said honestly surprised. He should already be thrashing around and shifting….
“I refused to let this take over me.” He said with confidence. “I’m ready. I know if I don’t follow direction, I’ll succumb to this… what is this?” He looked at his hands. His claws were coming out. “I just…. I just *know* that those people are about to die because of me….” He admitted.
“You’re tasting the smallest inkling of your power.” I put my thumb behind his ear and pressed into it. That spot behind the ear where the jaw connects has some magic behind it. Most shifters, even ones who use the arcane arts to do so, can lose their forms by pressing that spot firmly.
While he fought the change; I extended my claws. I would mercifully cull these humans before he gorged. As he is, all he’d do is swallow them whole and run around like an idiot… he won’t even remember today.
Regardless I was so proud. This moment, as gruesome as it was, was grand for him. He has no idea… This is so rare…. Of all the witches I’ve known and met, only me, father, and maybe 2 others have this form… Grandfather doesn’t count. He uses a staff to do so.
