Book 3: Chapter 38
Sorry for being gone! Oversimplified reasons GO: STRESS, my online degree issues, and my plumbing! Originally that message was 3 paragraphs.
Zayde
“I’m still not sure you should do this….” Said Theophania, literally exactly the way she used to ask before we went to battle…
I could get it… The demons can’t come… But at least they agreed to meet at an old cathedral here. That was objectively better… This was the territory of the Witch King’s oldest son.
“I will be fine my little wife.” I said with a small smile. I hugged her close, smelling her hair. She smelled like strawberries, after the brand she used…
“I’m taking Micael; he’s green, but I think he and Casey need to see.” I said putting a finger under her chin. I wanted her to look me in the eyes, and know that I have full confidence. “And Echidnah. She volunteered for her grounding to be removed.” I chuckled.
I was also grateful. The Mother of Monsters would wait outside. Should anything happen, we could attack from within and outside.
There will also be no goat’s grass until *after* the trip on the way home! I wouldn’t say that though. She’d only worry more. With a final kiss, I left to my father’s office. he was coming too, but we thought it best that they didn’t know my mate was reborn… Theophania was the only female Diamond leader… I was the footnote.
I’d be surprised if anyone knew who I was, even though I have always been fairly decent in my combat abilities, but then I wasn’t Zayde Yoltier… I was Stanley Baker… son of Robert Baker of Londyn…. a house so low that some of my family found it easier to live with humans than to hide a coven….
But now that I had the power men killed for… I would remain myself. I didn’t let this power eat me alive and turn me into a cocky lord needing to be knocked down a peg…
The elevator took me to father’s room, but I could hear him arguing. He didn’t stop yelling as I walked in.
“I said what I fucking said!” He slammed the phone down, and growled like a demon. “Are you ready?” He asked impatiently.
“What was that about?” I asked walking with him. We’d ride in his van. Well, they would. I thought it would be good for Micael especially to speak with another behimoth wielder. He’s young, and green. Father is a veteran to the veterans, being only I think 2 or 3 decades younger than Gulteer. That’s a ‘secret’. Everyone more or less knows, but hides that to any who don’t, because with such a designation, comes questions.
But unlike the rest, I knew more than I should. His secret name is Gultivier Alma’ezzuvi.
“Don’t.” He said angrily.
I ignored. I chose to grin at his disgruntled scowl.
He hates it, because for those of us who know old witch, he did that to be an edge lord… it means ‘the darkest star to steal the light’. If not for the walls having ears, I’d call him that just to piss him off. Because what’s better than a multi-ton lizard? A pissed off one.
“….I hear you son. You’re *really* looking for a popped ear.” He growled.
“But you love me.” I said sweetly. I elbowed him lightly. It earned me a true warning growl, but I kept messing with him. He may not like it, but it is Good to occasionally be poked at, especially with how cocky we can get.
We were basically at the garage now, and everyone was already in the car. Casey would ride with me, as I knew Micael would want to ask… more intimate questions. He’s going through puberty, pimples and voice cracks included. He even looked a little younger, since now he was immortal.
*Gtltivier* flicked my ear with all the force his fingers could muster. I yelped, half surprised he’d actually correct me. He really was in a bad mood. I laughed. I also dodged the second attempt to get me.
“There. I’m pissed about coven business. Now that you’re moving has a date, I thought I could handle it…. I can’t. I can’t deal with humans Stanley.” He said looking at me honestly. His eyes were their trueness, and they were red as cherries. “I mean Zayde. You know what I meant.” He hissed.
“…. Were you disrespected by a mortal?” I asked stopping short of my car.
“They have gotten so bold since I left it to you boys. That isn’t your fault. I told you, and Andrei not to kill any of them… not to hunt the disobedient… not to lay hands on them.” He grumbled. “I’ll lead the car train. It’s your coven… I will not speak for you; you are a man.” He shook wrists with me.
“And I will do my best to bring peace… I have a feeling they’ll attack anyway or something, but I want it to be known that we who serve the master held our swords in the sand.” I said seeing him smile.
“You will succeed… I am elated I get to see *my* son rise… You are the only son, the only grandchild of my father to ever lead a coven…. As you know, there are others, but none hold such an honor of being a Diamond… Some of my late siblings didn’t even hold such prestige...”
“The master does this for Heidi’s line to shine.” I said getting in my car. I cranked it up; it sputtered a bit… maybe I should bring a broom just in case. I held out my hand and it came to me…. But then it would look suspicious that a broom is in the back seat…
Priests can see through illusion…
Fuck it. I won’t risk being stranded nearly 3 hours away.
“That’s only part of it.” Said father, yelling a bit as he got in his car. “The other part is that he does value you lot too. He is the night ‘father’ after all.”
“I can fly faster than your metal box.” Said Echidna. Typhen stayed to protect the castle. He was on top the tallest tower, looking out for threats. “I’ll fly there and should anything happen, summon me.” She vanished. She could fly through the spirit world, so none would see her.
I cranked my car, and Casey had her hands in her lap. She’d learned submission and bowing, and I wondered was she staring at her hands out of fear or not… I drove off and she was so quiet, that after an hour I finally initiated some conversation.
“I believe this is your first time alone with me since your turning.” I said with a small smile. I scared her. She didn’t have a heartbeat or fear scents anymore, but her body language gave her away.
“It is.” She said quietly.
“I get you’re nervous. Our world was under your nose this entire time, yet, now you see.” I said with a small nod.
“And I don’t like it.” She commented. “Witches see people as ingredients…. Vampires see them as cattle. Like REAL cows… and I don’t want to get like that.” She mumbled. “And you’re basically our boss…The supernatural world isn’t democratic…. People ARE NOT equal… To hold my head too high to you means I could make trouble for Micael later.”
“You can trust me when I say that kind of thing doesn’t faze me…. Please if I offend you, tell me. I’ve learned to interact with mortals much better than the others, well maybe Andrei is better at it than I… You get what I mean right?” I asked.
“I think… But I’m not human anymore… I can’t enjoy the sun… I can’t enjoy food… water… soda… coffee… only blood. Even in my sleep I thirst… even when my belly is full I want more.” She mumbled.
“I know that feeling… though for me it is the urge to destroy… and devour… to crush buildings… to raze entire towns for no reason, since that’s what this kind of beast was made to do. I know you didn’t willingly turn, but if you can conquer your urges, you’ll find immortality pleasant.” I smiled.
“To be honest, I’m excited about that part…. We’re even going to do the one thing that we both agreed on… that we’d leave this tiny town…. I’m training to be a doctor… He’s your assistant… apprentice… I don’t sound like I’m complaining, am I?” She asked clearly upset.
“A little, but you have a right.” I petted her head. “I’ll tell you a secret too… soon you’ll be able to taste the blood of humans proper. Some taste like pie, others steak… some even taste so good their blood is turned to sorbet.”
“Really?” She asked; her eyes were lit up like a little kid. She didn’t mourn mortals anymore; that was natural. She lamented that she was losing her humanity. I can’t empathize, but I kind of get it. She lost everything about her old life, and was thrown into this one.
“It’ll be my treat the day you do.” I said with a firm nod. “We can all go on a double date.”
“Oh I like that!” She said excitedly.
“After all, you will end up being a doctor for the man farm.” I said this to see her reaction. It was mortified. “Who better to heal them than one who still has compassion?” I asked. “Who better to aid them? Somone who will care More than an older vampire, that’s for damn sure.”
The grand cathedral’s scent could be smelled… This was a trap; the church was not in the city, but rather, outside it in an old village past the capital….
“Do you… what’s that putrid scent?” She asked.
“Casey, that’s what a Real priest smells like… and it isn’t the Man King….” I said trying to think….It was so familiar! I didn’t recognize this scent, but I kind of did. Maybe they were a child of one of them… It’s been about 400 years since I was in this part of the world, and encountered anyone like this… that’s too long.
“Who is it then?” she asked.
I KNEW this scent…. I knew the people it belonged to-
“Maybe the house of VanHellsong? One might still exist” I blurted, hoping I was wrong. “We waged an unholy crusade on that damn family; all supernaturals did. They even made enemies with unicorns, killing them for their sharp, pure horns….. We hunted them… We culled them like sheep… I heard the Holy Seat took in the last one, and housed him in his city, but that was 400 years ago, and their line is heavily cursed. I’m not sure if they can even breed…” I mumbled the last part…
“That’s horrid… How can you hope to make peace with them if you all did That?!” She yelled. We could see the city.
“Well… you don’t.” I said simply. “Either they accept our terms and leave us be or we go to battle.” I said faking stoicism…. Fuck…
