Chapter 67
Kaiden
“We won’t tell anyone I swear!” screamed the girl.
“That’s what they all say, but eventually someone slips up. or they come back again.” Snarled the Warrior.
The wind shifted and the warriors immediately faced my direction and bowed, picking up my scent.
“Alpha, forgive my daughter, she is but a pup. This is her first patrol.” He begged, not that he needed to. I didn’t say anything, I just walked to the campfire, into the light, and they saw how horrid my neck looked. My body was bruised, and my eyes were probably red. The other injuries had not been tended, so I probably looked undead. The humans gasped. I let out a raspy chuckle, sitting on a log next to them.
My stomach growled.
I ignored it and motioned for the two warriors to sit by the fire with me. The fire crackled in the silence, as they waited for me to speak. I could tell by the looks on their faces as they sat across from me that I needed to heal.
“Do you know how your Luna came to be in this pack?” I say firmly, looking at the pup.
She shook her head. “No Alpha.” I could hear her worried thoughts for the humans. She really was a good kid.
“Have you heard of the SnowMoon Pack?” I question, sucking in a deep breath. Talking had turned into a chore. I was tossed a bottled water from a new warrior that had appeared in bike shorts. He was about 6’5, dark red hair and yellow eyes. He sat next to the other warriors.
She shook her head again.
“Because their all dead, except a few survivors, no more than 10 including your Luna last time I checked.” I said flatly.
“I didn’t know that Alpha.” She said quietly, wanting to vouch for the humans, but her wolf stopped her. It would be disrespectful.
“Her pack wasn’t the only to end in such a gruesome way… but she was lucky. Your Luna being one of them as a newborn and picked up by her severely burned uncle was actually Very lucky.” I say flatly. “An entire pack of 285 souls lost in a blaze of fire and silver, because their Alpha showed pity on a single pregnant woman… one who lied on her word that she would not tell a soul to escape… one who came back with guns and silver.” I growl. “Those Hunters were never found, and those souls can never find peace, or justice.”
Even she didn’t know her adopted status. She has only one living blood relative because of a few humans… I don’t know how babygirl would react if she ever found that out, but as Luna, all she’d have to do is find that on accident one day….
“I understand.” She said showing submission. My stomach growled again, and it was harder to ignore this time.
“My intention isn’t to scare you pup, rather it’s to warn you of the danger. Every human that wonders here, even by accident, is a threat. There are far bigger foes than just HeadHunters out there.” I said looking at the fire crackle. I know my eyes were lit up with my wolf, because he was getting agitated.
Also, I wasn’t taking anything out on them. I wasn’t eating them because they were human, I did because as I was, I was currently fatally injured… Bryson’s bites weren’t healing… Those wounds cannot be stitched, and I cannot heal as I am with so much blood loss.
Their fate was just bad luck.
Had they been piss drunk, asleep, or if we had some way to send them on their way first, we’d try that. But we didn’t, and they weren’t. They were meat, the only solution to my predicament; I took no joy in this either. It was why I was kind of stalling.
It was possible that I could have went hunting, but it would make no sense to pass up healing Now. At any time, even now, I could be challenged, or need to go back to Horizon.
“The pack comes first, sis.” Said the red headed warrior flatly to the girl, patting her on the shoulder.
My stomach growled again; this time I think even the humans could hear it. Their eyes grew wide, and the male warriors showed their necks. “Though, I would be lying if I said I was killing them for just the pack. I need the meat.” I laugh a bit. It lacked humor.
Rakaam had lost his patience and took over for a moment, swiftly snapping the girl’s neck. The boy stood up, but he only made a step before he was dead as well. He started to eat the boy’s left arm, and I was finally healed enough. It wasn’t what I’d planned, but to him, all mortals were meat.
I yanked out the painful staples, but the small holes left from them healed easily enough. The young Warrior, Ellie was her name I believe looked at me with shock, while her family was unsurprised. Without saying anything, I leaned down, and tossed the girl to the warriors before taking off my hospital shorts and shifting. The males shifted and ate together, while the pup sat at the campsite.
It was sunrise when I arrived at the other packhouse, covered in thick blood on my fur. The warriors followed me to show loyalty, which I didn’t mind. I could passively hear their thoughts, but the young she wolf stood out. The girl seemed to have questions, but was afraid to ask.
Her thoughts went back and forth about what I had done, and if it was right. She was young, so if she knew I could hear her, it would probably scare her. Rakaam was livid, but that was no surprise. She was young, and had been raised watching human TV, reading about them, and most likely saw ‘good’ in them. Humans aren’t like what you read in books, but she would never know that. Not yet anyway. Her compassion could get her, or the pack hurt. All it would take would be tear filled eyes and a sob story, and about a month later they would either return, or worse, the pack would be surprise attacked by an entirely new set of humans if motivated enough.
/I will assign her village patrol, not border, when she comes of age./ I mind link her father.
He nodded without saying anything.
I shifted and slipped on my shorts before entering. Derrick was already up with his mother on the couch. She looked like she still wasn’t taking the loss of her mate well. She was thinner than I had remembered, and her white hair was not as shiny as it usually was. I walked over to her, and put a firm hand on her back, rubbing it in circles. Her wolf whined in fear, and she showed her neck. /It’ll be ok./ I link her. She didn’t respond, she only sank into the couch, not liking the attention I was giving her. I backed off, and looked to Derrick, who was holding her like a child now.
“Anything I should know about?” I blurt, being tossed a wet towel by a warrior, clocking in.
“Well, I can smell that you must have encountered the Rogue that we caught. It took me and all 10 ranked warriors to catch that guy.” He held his mother close to his chest. She likely was set off by my aggressive scent. It didn’t help that I also carried the smell of man-eater as well.
“Yeah I did, I didn’t kill him though. He needs to learn who’s Alpha first.” I growl, walking to the fridge. I got out some raw beef for her body to heal. About 2 pounds worth would do it I figured.
“She won’t eat...” He sighed. I put the plate in her hands, and she looked at it, uninterested.
“Eat.” I command in my Alpha voice. It boomed through the living room, rattling the windows.
Darrick looked pissed that I did that to his mother, but her wolf ate as if someone would take it from her.
“If I have to come back here and see you unwell, I will take you back home with me.” I growl, making her wolf whine again, nodding in submission.
/Dude that’s my mom!/ He mind linked me.
/Do you want her to eat or not?/ I mind link him back.
He sighed, and I went upstairs. There were no papers here for me, but I still waited until office hours to strike the fear into the hearts of everyone in the packhouse. Since I’m not here as much, this was especially important. It was also important to calm down and fully heal even my bruises so as not to have my mate worry. I could see the scar on my neck in the reflection of the computer screen, but better a scar than staples.
A/n: I will not change major events. I was thinking maybe make the campers a little villainized to sugar coat this scene, however that takes away from it. They were normal people, doing normal stuff, but unfortunately, they were doing that ‘normal stuff’ in the wrong area. Wrong place, wrong time.
