Chapter 110 Edward is Missing
So, I headed to the nurse's station to find out what was going on. I saw two nurses there, deep in a gossip session.
One nurse whispered, "Did you hear? That internet celeb couple who used to flaunt their love every day is totally divorced now."
The other nurse leaned in, "You mean Alice and Eric? They haven't posted together in ages, so something was up. Now that they've made their money, they don't have to fake it anymore and just split." She shrugged like it was no big deal.
The first nurse, scrolling through her phone, said, "Did you know Alice's lawyer is actually some rich lady? The lives of the rich are way more complicated than we think. Just yesterday, I saw the whole family here at the hospital."
"You saw her?" The other nurse's eyes lit up with curiosity. "Is she pretty?"
The first nurse nodded seriously, "Yeah, she's pretty. Yesterday, a man and a woman came in with stab wounds. They weren't too bad, but it was still scary."
"What happened? I wasn't on duty last night, spill the tea." The nurse looked at her colleague, eager for more details.
I couldn't stand them gossiping about my family, so I stepped in and said, "I'm the lawyer and the rich lady you're talking about. The Howard family's business is not for you to discuss."
The nurses were startled, stuck out their tongues, and shut up real quick.
Status really was the best weapon. With just a few words, I shut them down, and they probably wouldn't dare to gossip about it again.
I asked sternly, "Where were the people brought in last night taken?"
The nurse who started the conversation lowered her eyes and said, "They were discharged early this morning. Otherwise, we wouldn't be talking about it."
I was a bit surprised and asked, "Are they okay now?"
The nurse shook her head, "No, they just got out of immediate danger. I heard they were moved to another hospital to avoid someone."
"Where did they go?" I pressed.
The nurse shook her head again, "Sorry, I don't know. That's not something we nurses would find out."
Hearing the nurse's honest response, I knew she didn't have more info, so I let it go. I warned them in a low voice, "If I catch you talking about this again, you'll regret it."
The two nurses nodded frantically. I didn't stick around the hospital any longer, worried that if I stayed, I'd start crying uncontrollably.
I knew Clara was avoiding no one but me. Even if the media tried to dig up dirt on the Howard family or the Howard Group, they wouldn't dare without our say-so. As for the online rumors, apart from a few of Eric's die-hard fans, most were secretly paid off by Anne and her boyfriend. Now, one of them was lying in the hospital, and the other was in jail. So, no one would spread any info. The only person the Howard family needed to guard against now was me.
Thinking about it made my heart ache. Clara, who I'd treated like a mother for four years, was now treating me like an enemy, not even letting me see Edward. Clara's tactics were low. She must've planned this from the moment she changed her attitude last night. I slowly walked out of the hospital, the midday sun glaring, but I felt a chill.
With a glimmer of hope, I dialed Clara's number with trembling fingers. Each ring felt like a punch to my heart. But the call went unanswered. She was definitely avoiding me. My heart filled with disappointment and helplessness, but I was still worried about Edward. Had he woken up? I tried calling his phone, but it went straight to voicemail. Was the battery dead, or had someone turned it off? I felt completely lost.
Sitting quietly in the car, I stared blankly ahead, not knowing where to go. In my helplessness, I suddenly thought of someone who would definitely know where Edward was.
Feeling like I'd found a lifeline, I quickly dialed the number again. The phone still went unanswered, the monotonous sound grating in the silent car. Unwilling to give up, I dialed once more, only to get a busy signal. Listening to the mechanical voice, I felt my heart sink. I slowly hung up, took a deep breath, and felt a wave of bitterness. It seemed even Albert was avoiding me. Clara must've told him to ignore my calls. Or maybe Edward had woken up and given the order himself. Otherwise, Albert would never dare not to answer my call.
I couldn't help but recall last night: Edward looking into my eyes, earnestly expressing his desire to reconcile. Thinking of this, I felt a warm feeling surge in my heart, slightly lifting my gloomy mood. It was like a faint light piercing the darkness, bringing me some comfort. But despite this small relief, I was still deeply worried because I couldn't find Edward. I kept thinking about where he might be, countless scenarios flashing through my mind, but I couldn't pinpoint his exact location. This uncertainty made me increasingly anxious; I desperately wanted to know where he was and if he was safe.
Just when I didn't know what to do, my phone suddenly rang. Without looking at the number, I quickly answered the call.
