Chapter 87 Romance by the Lake

I knew I was about to take a big step to fix things between Edward and me. I reached out and touched his face, my fingertips tingling. The roughness of his stubble stirred up all sorts of feelings inside me.

This touch, once so familiar and comforting, now felt almost alien. Edward's Adam's apple bobbed, like a pebble dropped into the lake of my heart, sending ripples everywhere. Drawing closer, I savored the warmth radiating from his body. It was a warmth that made me feel secure yet inexplicably vulnerable. My arms slid around his neck, though my body remained tense. My heart was racing, practically shouting my desire for him.

I didn't answer Edward, just buried my face in his neck, closed my eyes, and took a deep breath, inhaling his scent.

"Honey, I want us to start over, like before," I said, my body shifting slightly, trying to break the cold barrier between us.

Edward snorted. "What, are you trying to seduce me again?" With my plan exposed, I stopped pretending and planted a light kiss on the corner of his lips, which twitched slightly.

"Is it a crime to seduce my husband?" I asked, my hands exploring his back, trying to show him how much I wanted him.

"You left my neck like this and told Lila it had nothing to do with you?" Edward pulled down his collar, revealing a dark purple hickey.

I played dumb and pressed his hand against my chest. "How do you eat such a round bread?"

Edward pulled his hand away and grabbed my chin. "Diana, your desperate attempts to seduce me are really funny, but I like it." He kissed me hard on the lips.

The kiss was so long I almost couldn't breathe. Despite the sadness, I kissed him back with everything I had, knowing my efforts were starting to pay off.

After a while, Edward finally pulled back. "Diana, do you like the gift I gave you?" he asked lightly.

I nodded seriously. "Yes, I do!"

"If you like it, why didn't I hear a thank you from you?" I moved closer, wrapping my arms around his head and leaning on his shoulder. "How could I not thank you? But a thank you doesn't seem enough to show my sincerity, how about..." I trailed off, but the implication was clear.

Edward got it too. He lightly patted my butt.

I was taken aback, but more than anything, an unusual intimacy enveloped me, making me both shy and inexplicably happy. My cheeks flushed slightly as I gazed up at him.

"What are you doing?" I said coyly.

Edward had a mischievous smile, like a kid who just did something they were proud of.

The tension between us was at its peak, my heart confused but secretly delighted. I turned my head, pretending to be mad and not looking at him. He hugged me from behind, his chin resting on my shoulder, his breath gently brushing against my neck, tickling me.

"Diana, I like you," Edward's voice was low and magnetic.

"Like" felt like a needle pricking my heart. Yeah, Edward said he liked me, not loved me. I nudged his abs with my elbow, and he hugged me tighter.

Everything was perfect, but then my stomach growled. The sound was so loud in the quiet room, and my face turned red as I sneaked a glance at Edward.

Edward was first stunned, then his mouth curved into a gentle smile. "Looks like you're hungry. How can you have the energy to satisfy me if you're not full?" My face turned red again.

He typed a message on his phone.

Soon, the phone in the CEO's office rang. Edward reached out to answer it, said a few words, and then hung up.

He made a gentlemanly gesture towards me. "May I invite you to dinner?"

I was amused by Edward's gesture, lightly placing my hand on his, and we took the CEO's elevator downstairs together. The driver was already waiting for us in the parking lot. The car drove away, and the trees on both sides of the street swiftly retreated.

After driving for about ten minutes, the driver stopped the car. Edward got out first and very gentlemanly opened the car door for me, "This way please."

I followed him out of the car and found ourselves on a grassy lakeside.

A gentle breeze blew, and I felt very comfortable. In front of me was a small round table, the white tablecloth as pristine as the first snow of winter. On the table were two exquisite silver candlesticks, their flames gently flickering in the breeze, casting a warm glow around like little fairies. Surrounding the candlesticks were a circle of vibrant roses, exuding a romantic atmosphere. Some food had already been served, and Edward and I sat on either side of the table.

"This is a wine I specially selected. I hope you like it." Edward handed me a glass.

I took the glass, gently swirling it, watching the liquid inside swirl, and said, "As long as you prepared it, I will like it."

I took a small sip, the rich aroma of the wine spreading in my mouth, slightly easing my embarrassment.

"What made you think of having such a romantic dinner today?" I looked up at him, my eyes full of curiosity and happiness.

"I've heard this place is very nice, but never had the chance to bring you here. Today, I had some time, so I thought we'd give it a try. It's very peaceful here, just the two of us. I wanted to spend a beautiful evening with you in this special place." Edward's tone carried an addictive charm.

Edward helped cut my steak into small pieces, and I began to enjoy the meal. I felt like I was in a fairy tale kingdom, thoroughly enjoying this beautiful evening and the candlelit dinner.

While Edward got up to take a call, I picked up my phone and started taking pictures. I made sure to only capture myself and the exquisite food on the table, not including Edward. I carefully selected some well-angled photos and posted a social media update visible only to Anne. These photos, at a glance, only showed me and the exquisite food, but upon closer inspection, Edward's reflection could be seen in the delicate wine glasses. I was sure Anne would scrutinize every photo, and the thought made me smile.

When Edward returned from his call, the waiter had just brought the final dessert.

"This dessert looks really good. I remember Anne loves sweets. How about we pack some for her to try?" At that moment, Edward was busy with his phone, not paying attention to what I was saying. He replied to a message and said to me, "Sure, as long as you're happy."

I asked the waiter to pack the entire dessert, planning to bring it to Anne. Thinking about her reaction to the dessert, I felt my mood brighten considerably.

After dinner, Edward and I headed to the parking lot. We were supposed to walk together, but I lagged behind a bit to grab dessert for Anne. Edward was still on the phone ahead of me, so I picked up the pace to catch up.

Out of nowhere, a group of rough-looking girls came at me, their eyes full of malice. I got a bad feeling in my gut.

"Hey, stop! You're Diana, right?" The leader of the group called out my name.
