Chapter 354 Turning Point
When I realized Daniel was also begging for Lanny, my face darkened. I had a long history with the Wilson family. As a kid, I was in and out of the Wilson Villa like it was my own place.
Seeing Daniel now, with his graying hair and slightly hunched back, hit me with a wave of sadness. He used to be a big shot in the business world, but now he looked so defeated.
But then I remembered Lila's terrified eyes when she was rescued and Fiona's cries over losing her child. Lanny's mistakes were serious and unforgivable.
Daniel's eyes were full of desperation. He said, "Diana, for the sake of the kindness the Wilson family showed you when you were young, please let Lanny go this time. If you speak up, Nicholas will surely stop pursuing this. The Wilson family is willing to give you 20% of all our assets."
David's eyes widened in disbelief. "Dad, what are you saying?" he shouted, stepping forward. "20%? That's almost all the profits the Wilson family has accumulated over the years!"
I stared directly at Daniel, my tone icy. "Mr. Wilson, do you think this is something money can solve? Lanny's mistakes have caused irreparable damage, far beyond what any amount of assets can measure. Besides," I said sternly, "Lanny has offended more than just me. The Griffin family and the Jackson family despise him for his vile actions. Even if I were to show mercy today, the Griffin family and the Jackson family would never let him go. They will hunt him down relentlessly. Can the Wilson family really protect him forever?"
Daniel's face turned pale, and he nearly collapsed. His bodyguard quickly supported him. He muttered to himself, "How did it come to this? Is there really no way out?"
He had thought that the Wilson family's wealth and connections would find a way out, but he hadn't realized how dire the situation truly was.
At this moment, David couldn't hold back any longer. He rushed forward and shouted at Daniel, "Dad, stop making mistakes! Lanny did wrong and must face the consequences. The Wilson family can't keep paying for his errors. I've been living in fear and guilt every day. If this continues, the entire Wilson family will be dragged down."
Daniel looked at the agitated David and then at my resolute face, and his last hope was completely shattered. He slowly stood up straight. "If that's the case," Daniel sighed deeply, his voice thick with emotion, "then Lanny will have to bear the consequences of his actions alone. The Wilson family will no longer intervene; it's as if I never had this son." With that, he turned and walked away, each step heavy with defeat.
I watched Daniel's departing figure, feeling a mix of emotions. At some point, the rain had stopped. This storm might be nearing its end, but the wounds in the hearts of those hurt would not be easily healed.
"Diana, I still need to apologize to you. I'm sorry," David said after Daniel left, bowing respectfully to me. I replied, "You should apologize to Lila and Fiona. Fiona has been looking for you."Seeing David looking so down, I couldn't help but feel a bit sorry for him. "Fiona and I..." David sniffled, looking lost. "We're probably done. It was a business marriage from the start, and the feelings weren't really there." He seemed to be talking to me, but it felt more like he was trying to convince himself.
"No matter what kind of marriage it is, you shouldn't just avoid it. At least let her know what you're up to," I said, tired of his self-pity. "So she doesn't get the wrong idea again."
I wanted to say that Fiona misunderstood not just David, but me too. But seeing David like this, I couldn't bring myself to say it.
"Diana, thanks. I'll take care of it," David said, bowing again before leaving.
Without the Wilson family's protection, Lanny would soon be found by Nicholas's people or the Griffin family. His fate was sealed, and there was only one outcome that awaited him.
I had more important things to deal with. The overseas project crisis caused by Lanny's actions was quietly turning around. The client, who had been furious over the delayed shipment and even considered suing the Cooper Group, was deeply moved upon hearing about my brave rescue of Lila despite being maliciously framed. He decided to come to the country to meet me personally.
That day, I got a call saying the client rep, Harvey Grant, had arrived and wanted to meet me. I headed straight to the meeting room.
When I opened the door, I saw a middle-aged man in a sharp suit stand up. This had to be Harvey. But when I saw the man next to him, I was shocked. It was Jeffrey Adams, the Astoria lawyer who had been there for me during my tough times in The Ends of the Earth after Edward left me.
I couldn't believe we were meeting again, and in such an important setting! My heart skipped a beat, and memories of that indescribable past flooded my mind, almost making me lose my cool.
Harvey quickly stepped forward, extending his hand warmly. "Ms. Cooper, I've heard so much about you. Meeting you today, I have to say, you really are an amazing woman!"
I pushed down the turmoil in my heart and smiled. "Mr. Grant, you're too kind. The delay in the shipment was entirely our fault, and I deeply regret the inconvenience it caused you."
Harvey waved his hand dismissively. "Ms. Cooper, I'm not here to assign blame. Before coming, I thoroughly investigated the entire incident and learned about the malicious framing you endured. Your courage and responsibility in rescuing that lady under such difficult circumstances greatly impressed me."
At this moment, Jeffrey adjusted his glasses and greeted me with a perfectly timed smile. "Ms. Cooper, it's been years. I didn't expect you to become such a young entrepreneur."
"Jeffrey, you know Ms. Cooper?" Harvey asked with interest.
Jeffrey looked at Harvey and respectfully said, "Mr. Grant, you might not know that Ms. Cooper is also a lawyer. We met once and had a great conversation about some complex legal issues. Her professional skills and unique insights left a deep impression on me."
Harvey's face lit up with admiration upon hearing Jeffrey introduce me like that.
