Chapter 325 Son-in-law
When I realized Fiona's current mess was because of the shipment I asked her to handle, guilt hit me like a ton of bricks.
"It's all my fault. Why did I ask her to deal with that shipment?" I muttered under my breath.
I remembered Fiona's bright smile when she agreed to help. Now, seeing her lying in a hospital bed, her fate uncertain, I couldn't help but worry.
Alaric looked at me with concern. "Diana, don't beat yourself up. Fiona's tough. She'll pull through."
I glanced at the despondent David and said hesitantly, "David, I'm so sorry. It's my fault Fiona is in this situation. If I hadn't asked for her help, none of this would have happened."
David paused, then looked up at me. "This isn't on you. It's that Lanny's fault!"
I knew that if it weren't for my request, Fiona wouldn't be in this mess. I bit my lip, unsure how to make things right.
I turned to Alaric, my expression anxious and a bit helpless. "Alaric, could you take Skylar and Melissa home for me? I need you to look after Skylar."
Alaric replied gently, "Diana, you don't need to be so formal with me. I've always said that taking care of you and your daughter is something I do willingly. Don't worry. I'll get Skylar settled and come right back to the hospital."
Seeing me nod in agreement, Alaric quickly headed towards the hospital courtyard to find Skylar and Melissa.
"Diana, you should go be with Skylar," David said, gradually calming down, his voice tinged with exhaustion. "Skylar just got found. She needs you right now."
He slowly stood up from the floor and heavily sat back down on the corridor bench.
I shook my head lightly and sat next to David, speaking softly, "I've been through childbirth. You all came in a hurry, and you might not have everything prepared. If Fiona needs anything urgently, I can help get it."
David nodded slightly, leaning his head back against the bench with his eyes closed, saying nothing more.
I said, "David, if Lanny is really behind this, you need to be careful. I'm worried he might still pose a threat to Fiona and your child."
After a moment of silence, I suddenly thought of this and looked at David.
David looked back at me, his expression serious, his tone solemn. "It's not just us who need to be careful. You do too."
"Me?" I was puzzled. I had no dealings with Lanny, so I didn't understand why David wanted me to be cautious.
"He wouldn't go to such lengths to seize your shipment for no reason," David said, staring blankly at the ceiling, his voice cold.
Yes, this all started because Lanny had my shipment seized. But why was he targeting me? Before I could sort out my thoughts, a commotion came from the end of the corridor.
I looked towards the noise, expecting another emergency patient, but instead saw a well-dressed elderly couple, surrounded by a group of people, making their way towards us, breaking the corridor's silence. At that moment, it was just David and me in the corridor. My gut told me this group was here for us. When David quickly sat up straight and then stood, my suspicion was confirmed: the newcomers were Fiona's parents—Ronnie and Harper Griffin of the Griffin Group.
"Ronnie," David said, bowing slightly, his voice tinged with respect.
I quickly stood up as well, trying to look respectful. "Mr. Griffin, hello."
Ronnie's piercing gaze landed on me, and just one look made my heart race with anxiety.
Ronnie then turned his gaze to David, questioning, "David, what happened? How did Fiona end up in a car accident?"
David hung his head low, and from this gesture, I could tell Ronnie had absolute control over him. He probably never dared to defy Ronnie's orders.
Ronnie looked at David with disappointment, as if trying to see through him.
After a brief silence, Ronnie's voice echoed in the corridor, "David, I always thought you were reliable despite your family's situation, which is why I agreed to your marriage. But look at what has happened now."
David slowly raised his head, speaking with guilt, "Once Fiona has the baby, I'll take good care of them."
However, Ronnie abruptly raised his hand, cutting David off, "Don't give me that! You promised to take good care of her, but look what happened? She got into a serious car accident and is now fighting for her life! Do you know how worried Harper and I have been since we got the news?"
Harper, already in tears, pointed a trembling finger at David, her voice choked with emotion. "Fiona trusted you completely, followed you wholeheartedly, but you let this happen to her! She's carrying your child, two lives at stake!"
David's lips trembled uncontrollably. "It's my fault. I didn't protect Fiona. I'll take responsibility for everything."
Ronnie, furious, let out a bitter laugh, his face twitching with anger. "Take responsibility? What good is that now? The accident has happened, and Fiona and the baby are clinging to life. If you were truly responsible, this wouldn't have happened! What were you doing that was so important she had to handle it herself? Now look at the mess you've made!"
Ronnie paused, his eyes full of disdain, his tone sharper, "Don't forget, I agreed to Fiona marrying you to help your family, the Wilsons, so the Wilson Group wouldn't fall into obscurity. If it weren't for Fiona, do you think you'd have the life you have now?"
Hearing Ronnie bring up the past, I was shocked. I looked at David in disbelief.
At that time, David kept his head down, not saying a word in his defense.
I only knew that David had broken up with me suddenly and married Fiona for the Wilson Group's sake. I hadn't realized that without this marriage, the Wilson Group might have ceased to exist.
Over the years, David and Fiona had mostly been abroad. From what I saw since their return, they seemed to discuss life and business as equals. Fiona didn't seem as sharp-tongued as when I first met her and got along well with David's old friends. I never imagined David felt so stifled in this marriage.
