Chapter 199 Pretending to Be Pitiful

Edward shot me an awkward glance, but I acted like I didn't notice and headed into the kitchen.

Once I was out of sight, Edward finally picked up the phone. Through the kitchen glass, I could see him glancing my way, like he was on edge about something. His voice was so low I could barely catch any of it. But one thing was clear: Edward hadn't followed Hayden's orders to send Anne abroad.

When Edward hung up, I walked back into the living room with a glass of water, plopped down on the sofa, and ignored him. Sensing the cold shoulder, Edward blurted out, "Diana, I can explain."

I scoffed, "Edward, do you really think I'd buy your lies? We're done; stop pretending."

Edward frowned. "Diana, what happened to you? I just want to explain."

I raised my voice, "What happened to me? Don't forget, you're the one who had something going on with Anne. What right do you have to accuse me?"

Edward took a deep breath. "Dad wanted me to send Anne abroad, but how could I let a young girl fend for herself in a foreign country? She has a rare blood type and... she always gets hurt. I couldn't risk her being in danger alone, so I bought her a small villa to stay in temporarily. When dad changes his mind, I'll bring her back."

I was a bit shocked that Edward actually bought a villa for Anne. Even so, it was just a temporary fix. If I remember right, he bought that villa before our divorce, but it wasn't mentioned in the property division agreement he gave me. Not that it mattered much to me.

I sneered, "If you care so much about her, why don't you stay with her?"

Edward, looking anxious, said, "Diana, you mean something different to me. You're my wife..."

I cut him off angrily, "Wife? We're already divorced!"

"Your current girlfriend is Aria. How much does she know about what you did for Anne?" I asked, curious.

Edward hesitated, "I didn't plan to tell her. Diana, she's different from you. You truly love me. So, no matter what I do for Anne, you can accept it. But Aria, our relationship is more about mutual benefit. How could I tell her about this?"

Suddenly, it all made sense why Edward transferred most of his assets to my name before the divorce. He had been wary of Aria all along.

As we were talking, there was a knock on the door. Without thinking, I opened it. To my surprise, it was Anne. Seeing her, I was stunned, not understanding why Edward brought her here.

But Anne acted like nothing was up, peeking into the room and asking, "Diana, where's Edward?"

I stood in the doorway, glaring at Anne. "Anne, do you really have the nerve to show up here? Do you think you're welcome?"

Anne's smile wavered for a second before she put on her innocent act again. "Diana, how can you say that? Edward asked me to come."

I scoffed, "Cut the act."

Anne tried to look hurt. "Diana, I really don't know what you're talking about. I've had a rough time lately."

I raised my voice. "You refused to go abroad and had Edward buy you a villa, and you call that rough?"

A flicker of panic crossed Anne's face, but she quickly composed herself. "Edward felt sorry for me being alone. I have no home now, and Edward is my only family."

I was about to snap back when Edward, still on the couch, said, "Enough. Anne, let's go back." He tried to stand but was too weak and collapsed back onto the couch.

Anne rushed past me, almost shoving me aside, and supported Edward. She glared at me. "Diana, what did you do to Edward? Why is he like this?"

Before I could respond, Edward spoke up, "It's not Diana's fault. I caught a cold and I'm not feeling well."

Anne wasn't having it. "Edward, you got sick at her place, so it's her fault for not taking care of you. Diana, you already have a new lover. Why won't you let Edward go?"

I couldn't hold back my anger. "It was Edward who barged into my house, and security couldn't even get him to leave. So, who's really not letting go of whom?"

Edward, stuck in the middle, looked uncomfortable. He tugged at Anne's sleeve and said softly, "Alright, let's go back."

With Anne's help, Edward stood up again. As they were leaving, Anne stopped, turned to me, and said fiercely, "Diana, since you're already divorced from Edward, please don't bother him anymore. Aria and I will take care of him."

I couldn't help but laugh at the idea that Anne thought I was the one disturbing their lives. I also couldn't understand how Edward managed to make Anne and Aria coexist peacefully.

Edward's lips trembled like he had a lot to say, but Anne's urging cut him off. With her support, he walked unsteadily toward the door. Finally, he stopped at the doorway, broke free from Anne's grip, and turned to face me.

After a moment, Edward finally said, "Diana, take care."

Then, as if remembering Anne's presence, he quickly turned around and let her support him again, slowly disappearing from my sight.

Edward's and Anne's self-righteousness was utterly ridiculous, but as I stared at the empty elevator, I couldn't calm my heart for a long time.
