Chapter 85 The New Owner of the Law Firm is Lila
Even though Edward told me yesterday I could head to the company this morning to find Albert and sign the transfer agreement for the law firm, I wasn't in a rush. Lila had quite a bit to drink last night, and she probably hadn't checked her phone yet since she was still sleeping off the booze, so I gave her a call.
Lila picked up pretty quickly. Her voice was all lazy, "Hey, Diana? Why are you up so early? The sun's out; why not catch some more Z's?"
I drummed my fingers on the receiver. "Listen, you little slacker. I've already become the owner of Stellar Legal Advisors. We can sign the agreement today!"
"You got it that fast?" Lila sounded wide awake now and practically shouted.
"Yep, surprised?" I said, feeling a bit smug. "Stop snoozing. I'll send you the address; come find me!"
"Wait for me. I'll be right there!" Lila hung up. I lay back in bed, savoring this moment of leisure. Right now, this bed in an unfamiliar room felt like a peaceful harbor, making me reluctant to leave.
Knowing I was at the hotel, Lila showed up pretty quickly.
When she walked into my room, her eyes kept darting around.
"Diana, I can't believe you drank so much last night and brought your husband here. I always heard this place was nice and recommended it to you, but you wouldn't come. How is it? Did it help your relationship?" Lila asked excitedly, looking around.
I sighed. "No, last night Anne was scared of the thunder, and one call from her took Edward away."
"What? How could that happen?" Lila was stunned.
"Diana, you always described your marriage with Edward as hopeful and sweet. Sometimes I could sense some small ripples, but I never thought Edward would be bold enough to leave you here alone to meet his little lover," Lila got angrier as she spoke, her voice gradually rising.
I smiled. "It's not that dramatic! Anne has always been timid and can't sleep on rainy nights."
"That's still not right. A romantic hotel should be a place full of romance and passion, a place for you two to enjoy intimate moments together. But now it's become a place of awkwardness and disappointment for you alone. Edward is such a jerk!" Lila angrily accused.
I thought of the excitement I felt stepping into this love-filled room last night and the reluctance when Edward left, and I couldn't help but feel a bit down.
"How could Edward do this? Diana, I feel it's not worth it for you! You've put so much into this marriage, always caring about his every mood, pouring your love into it without reservation, but now he's let you down. Isn't marriage supposed to be a commitment to always meet each other's expectations?" Lila continued, not noticing my displeasure.
I knew this not only meant Edward let me down but also felt like a crack in the canvas of our marriage. The wish to start over seemed to slip through his fingers, never to be realized again.
I remembered why I called Lila over today and said smugly, "This is nothing. Anyway, I've already got the ownership of Stellar Legal Advisors. We'll go to Edward's office to sign the contract in a bit."
Lila pouted. "I don't want to go. You go by yourself. Seeing Edward makes me angry, I can't help but want to hit him."
"How can you not go? I'm transferring the law firm to you." I suddenly remembered that I had only told Lila I was giving her a valuable birthday gift but hadn't formally told her what it was.
"Why? You worked so hard to get the law firm, and you're just going to give it to me?" she said.
"Why wouldn't I?" I grinned. "Your birthday's next month, and I've been planning to get the law firm from Edward to give it to you as a birthday gift."
"Diana, this gift is way too valuable. I can't accept it," Lila kept refusing.
I frowned and said, "Don't think like that. I have no family. You and Daisy are my last support. Now that Daisy is abroad, you're my only hope. So, I want to give you the law firm."
Lila said, "But I'm happy just being a lawyer and earning a basic salary. I have no desire to manage a company."
Before Lila could finish, I interrupted. "Do you really want to be a frontline lawyer all your life, fighting in court? Isn't every lawyer's ultimate goal to become a partner in a law firm?"
"Finally, the law firm is reopening. With Edward's connections, it hasn't been affected but has gained more recognition. Now you want me to take over such a big firm? I can't do it. You should take over the firm, Diana. I'll work for you, okay?" Lila kept dodging.
I understood that Lila wasn't incapable of being a partner; she just didn't want me to give up Stellar Legal Advisors. "Silly, you be the boss, and I'll work for you. It's the same."
There seemed to be a glimmer of light in her eyes. She looked at me and said, "Diana, you're right, but I'm still a bit scared, scared of failing again."
I smiled and said, "What's there to fear about failure? If we fail, we'll learn from it and do better next time. You have to believe in yourself, just like I believe in you. And think about it, if you give up now, you might lose the opportunity in the future. We're still young and we have plenty of chances to fight for."
I comforted Lila with these words, but I had already made plans. After Alice's divorce case was over, I would leave Stellar Legal Advisors. In my plan to confront Anne, I hadn't left myself a way out. Whether I would continue being a lawyer or stay in Wind City was uncertain.
After persuading Lila for a long time, she finally agreed to take over Stellar Legal Advisors. We had lunch together before heading to Edward's company.
According to Edward's plan, Albert had already drafted the transfer contract early this morning, but I couldn't appear too eager. This was a psychological tactic Edward had taught me. Never show your true intentions in front of the other party, or you would be exposed and easily manipulated, which was a big no-no in business.
By the time Lila and I arrived at Edward's office, it was almost the end of the workday. He was leaning back in his chair with his eyes closed, bathed in the soft red glow of the setting sun, looking much gentler. I noticed the mark I left on his neck last night was still visible.
While I admired Edward's body as if it were a masterpiece, Lila didn't share my appreciation. The moment she stepped into the room, she deliberately kicked the flower stand by the coffee table, making a dull thud.
The noise startled Edward, and he opened his eyes. Seeing Lila, Edward couldn't help but feel a bit displeased. It wasn't until he saw me following Lila that his expression softened.
"Why did you bring her here?" Edward angrily questioned me. Just as Lila couldn't stand his behavior, he also had some complaints about Lila.
"Honey!" I walked up and blocked his view. I pushed Edward to the sofa, sat on his lap, and gently massaged his temples, explaining my purpose. As I massaged, Edward's frown gradually relaxed.
Fortunately, he didn't pursue the matter with Lila further. Everything went smoothly, and within an hour, Lila became the new owner of Stellar Legal Advisors.
