Chapter 159 It's Actually Her?
Anne waved her hand and said, "Hey, don't worry, I'm not gonna do anything to you. I already told you, I like you, and of course, I like your kid too. I even brought a gift for the baby."
She shook the gift bag in her hand. "But this bag is kinda heavy, so let me carry it for you." With that, she held the gift bag in one hand and supported me with the other as we walked toward the hospital room.
Once we got back to the room, Anne carefully helped me onto the bed, poured me a glass of water, and then dumped all the gifts she brought onto the sofa. I looked closely and saw that they were all baby supplies and toys.
She excitedly picked up one item after another to show me, her eyes sparkling and her smile as bright as a blooming flower. Her excitement made me feel like I was seeing the sweet and adorable Anne from the past. For a moment, I was dazed, unable to tell which was the real her.
But even with all the laughter, my mind was still filled with doubts. Why had Anne locked me in the room that day? That action had almost killed me! And why had her attitude changed so quickly now? What kind of conspiracy was hidden behind this?
I looked at her, trying to find some clues in her expression, but she seemed to be still immersed in joy, making her even more unfathomable to me.
Unable to hold back my doubts any longer, I asked, "Why did you lock me in the bedroom that day?"
Hearing my question, Anne flashed a look of surprise, her eyes full of astonishment. She said, "I locked you in the bedroom? I admit I did some things to hurt you in the past, but you can't blame me for this!"
I stared coldly at her and asked, "If it wasn't you, then who was it?"
Anne shook her head in confusion, eagerly explaining, "That day, you embarrassed me in front of our classmates, and I was really angry. But later, I called Edward, and he transferred some money to me, telling me to go on a trip to relax. As soon as I got his transfer, I packed my things and headed straight to the airport. If you don't believe me, look."
Anne put down the doll and took out her phone from her pocket. She quickly found Edward's transfer record and her ticket booking record and handed them to me, saying, "Look, I just got back from abroad yesterday afternoon."
"Who else was at home when you left?" I frowned and asked further.
"Melissa was at home. When I left, she was cleaning the living room. I told her she could take a break after finishing the living room. I'm really sorry, Diana. I was so angry and busy packing that I forgot you were upstairs." Anne's words were sincere, and she didn't seem to be lying.
I looked at her with doubt, my distrust still evident. Seeing that I still didn't believe her, she firmly said, "If you don't believe me, you can call Melissa and ask her."
"My phone was taken away by Edward," I said dejectedly.
"What?" Anne was incredulous and continued, "Then I'll call Melissa." She dialed Melissa's number without hesitation and handed the phone to me, her eyes showing a determination to prove her innocence.
Taking Anne's phone, I couldn't help but feel uneasy. Could it really not be Anne? Then who locked me up? Things seemed to be getting more complicated.
Melissa answered quickly, "Anne, are you back? Can I return to the Howard Villa tomorrow to take care of you? I've missed the last bus today."
"Melissa, it's me," I said calmly.
Melissa responded, "Mrs. Howard, are you with Anne? I'm really sorry, I can't make it back today."
I didn't want to dwell on this issue with Melissa, so I asked directly, "Melissa, did Anne say anything to you before you left that day?"
Melissa seemed to be recalling, and after a brief pause, she said, "Nothing special. Anne just told me to finish cleaning the living room and then take a break. She also said she was going on a trip abroad. Did something happen at the villa?"
I knew Melissa was an honest person who wouldn't lie to me, so I figured Anne must be telling the truth. "So, you left after cleaning?" I continued to ask.
Melissa said, "Yes. But before I left, Aria came back. She said she needed to pick up some personal items she left at the villa and was glad I hadn't left yet, or she would have made a wasted trip."
"So, she was the last one to leave the Howard Villa?" I pressed.
Melissa replied, "No, I waited for her in the living room for a while, and then we left together. She was kind enough to give me a ride to the station."
Anne and I exchanged a glance, and we saw the answer in each other's eyes. At that moment, all the mysteries seemed to have a clue, and the truth began to emerge.
After hanging up the phone, I noticed my hand was still trembling. I couldn't believe Aria could be so vicious. She knew no one would be at the Howard Villa for the next few days, yet she still locked me in the room.
"See, you didn't hurt her, but she wants to kill you!" Anne shouted angrily.
I shook my head, my expression serious. "No, she wants to harm not just me but the entire Howard family," I said.
"Aria wants to harm the Howard family?" Anne became alert, a hint of panic flashing in her eyes. "What do you mean?" she asked.
I moved further onto the bed, signaling Anne to sit down. She didn't refuse and sat cross-legged on my bed.
I began to explain to her, "A few days ago, I met a friend who works at the police station. He told me that Aria might be connected to an international fraud ring. So, based on her series of actions, I analyzed that she is likely trying to transfer the Howard family's assets."
Apparently, Anne couldn't process so much information at once, and she looked at me with confusion.
So I had to explain to her. "She might have been sent back by the international fraud ring to get close to the Howard family. But I don't know their specific purpose," I said.
"But the Howard family has been kind to her. How could she do such a thing? Did you tell Edward about this?" Anne was so anxious that her face flushed, unconsciously clenching the bed sheet.
I nodded and sighed helplessly, "I tried to tell Edward before, but he didn't believe me and scolded me harshly."
Anne angrily slapped the bed. "I knew Aria was no good. Not only did she enchant Edward, but now she's also eyeing the entire Howard family's assets. I can't stand it anymore, I have to tell Mom and Dad."
With that, she suddenly stood up and walked out of the hospital room with big strides, leaving me with just her back.
